A hull form design technique to enhance the wave-making resistance performance for a medium size high speed Ro-Pax ship was studied introducing an optimization method and an automatic hull form modification method. SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was applied as the optimization algorithm and the geometry of hull surface was represented and modified using the NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline). The wave-making resistance performance as an objective function in the optimization procedure was evaluated using the Rankine source panel method in which nonlinearity of the free surface boundary conditions and the trim and sinkage of the ship was fully taken into account. Using the Ro-Pax ship as a base hull, the hull-form optimization method was applied to obtain the hull shape that produced the lower wave-making resistance. To verify the validity of the hull-form optimization method, the numerical results was compared with the model test results.

As the seriousness of global environment pollution is gaining increasing public attention, research into greenhouse gas emissions of ships is being carried out globally. At a domestic level, however, in a number of significant fields such research has not been conducted to date. This study examined countermeasures for the reduction of $CO_2$ emission in the fields of electronic control engines, trim optimization, propeller polishing, hull cleaning, and anti-fouling paint using an actual sea-going vessel. Selected countermeasures were applied during sea trials of the ship and the effect of specific fuel oil consumption analyzed. It was found that each countermeasure resulted in a decrease of fuel consumption of 1~5%. The energy efficiency operational indicator (EEOI) was calculated and found to also be improved by 1~5%. Further research into the EEOI of domestic shipping is planned to enhance conformance with international environmental regulations and improve global competitiveness.

The optimal rib pattern design of B-pillar trim considering occupant head protection can be determined by two methods. One is the conventional approximate optimization method that uses the statistical design of experiments (DOE) and response surface method (RSM). Generally, approximated optimum results are obtained through the iterative process by trial-and-error. The quality of results strongly depends on the factors and levels assigned by a designer. The other is a methodology derived from previous work by the authors, called the sequential design of experiments (SDOE), to reduce the trial-and-error procedure and to find an appropriate condition for using artificial neural network (ANN) systematically. An appropriate condition is determined from the iterative process based on the analysis of means. With this new technique and ANN, it is possible to find an optimum design accurately and efficiently.

Lightweight board has been used for manufacturing various fields of automotive interior trims for years. The GMPU board was constructed with glass fiber mat, honeycomb and polyurethane foamed using polyol and isocyanate materials which were sprayed by robot that is interlocked foaming machine. For more lightweight and cost reduction this paper shows how to optimize GMPU process parameters that related to foaming condition, robot position and robot velocity for polyurethane weight. The results show that flexural strength and modulus of board's specimens were evaluated by robot velocity and moving pattern. Based on that, a innovative process was developed for more lightweight and cost reduction.
It is necessary a simple helicopter design and performance analysis program for a stage of helicopter conceptual design. To meet that needs, we have developed a program which is simply used to estimate helicopter configuration and performance. The program developed by this study is composed of Requirement, Mission profile Analysis, Size, Aerodynamic, Trim, Propulsion, Weight, and Performance modules, and each modules carry out operations for a given flight condition. In this study, we validate this analysis program in 9,500 1bs and 22,000 1bs helicopters and estimate design configuration and performance of 16,000 1b helicopter. And We can use this program to optimization process for Helicopter MDO framework.

The aim of this paper is to suggest the cutting stock problems which are two-dimensional in form, but can be treated as the optimization methods for one-dimensional cutting stock problem by exploiting the length requirement of the products. The solution method consists of two stages. The first calculates the number of roll pieces of each size. Next, 1-dimensional cutting stock model is set up. One heuristic method to calculate the number of each roll is suggested. The trim loss minization criteria are used to design the objective function. This model can be solved by the conventional cutting stock procedures based on enumerating the possible cutting patterns.

Butterfly valves are popularly used in service in the industrial and water works pipeline systems with large diameter because of its lightweight, simple structure and the rapidity of its manipulation. Sometimes cavitation can occur. resulting in noise, vibration and rapid deterioration of the valve trim, and do not allow further operation. Thus, the monitoring of cavitation is of economic interest and is very importance in industry. This paper proposes a condition monitoring scheme using statistical feature evaluation and support vector machine (SVM) to detect the cavitation conditions of butterfly valve which used as a flow control valve at the pumping stations. The stationary features of vibration signals are extracted from statistical moments. The SVMs are trained, and then classify normal and cavitation conditions of control valves. The SVMs with the reorganized feature vectors can distinguish the class of the untrained and untested data. The classification validity of this method is examined by various signals that are acquired from butterfly valves in the pumping stations and compared the classification success rate with those of self-organizing feature map neural network.

In developing modern aircraft, the reconfiguration control that can improve the safety and the survivability against the unexpected failure by partitioning control surfaces into several parts has been actively studied. This paper deals with the reconfiguration control using model predictive control method considering the saturation of control surfaces under the control surface failure. Linearized aircraft model at trim condition is used as the internal model of model predictive control. We propose the controller that performs optimization using LMI (linear matrix inequalities) based semi-definite programming in case that control surface saturation occurs, otherwise, uses analytic solution of the model predictive control. The performance of the proposed control method is evaluated by nonlinear simulation under the flight scenario of control surface failure.
Recently, shipping operators have been making efforts to reduce the fuel cost in various ways, such as trim optimization and bulb re-design. Furthermore, IMO restricts the hydro-dioxide emissions to the environment based on the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index), EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator), and SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan). In particular, ship speed is one of the most important factors for calculating the EEDI, which is based on methods suggested by ITTC (International Towing Tank Conference) or ISO (International Standardization Organization). Many shipbuilding companies in Korea have carried out speed trials around the Korea Straits. However, the conditions for these speed trials have not been exactly the same as those for model tests. Therefore, a ship’s speed is corrected by measured environmental data such as the seawater temperature, density, wind, waves, swell, drift, and rudder angle to match the conditions of the model tests. In this study, fundamental research was performed to evaluate the ship resistance performance due to changes in the water temperature and salinity, comparing the ISO method and numerical simulation. A numerical simulation of a KCS (KRISO Container ship) with a free-surface was performed using the commercial software Star-CCM+ under three conditions that were assumed based on the water temperature and salinity data in the Korea Straits. In the simulation results, the resistance increased under low water temperature & high salinity conditions, and it decreased under high water temperature & low salinity conditions. In addition, the ISO method showed the same result as the simulation.

Ever increasing fuel prices, almost doubled in the last three years, and global pressure to reduce their environmental impact have been enforcing commercial vessel operators and designers to re-assess current vessel designs with emphasis on their propulsion systems and operational practices. In this paper the "Inclined Keel Hull (IKH)" concept, which facilitates to use larger propeller diameter in combination with lower shaft speed rates and hence better transport efficiency, is explored for a modern 3600 TEU container vessel with the aim of fitting an 13 % larger diameter propeller (and hence resulting 20% lower rpm) to gain further power saving over the similar size basis container ship with conventional "level keel" configuration. It appears that successful application of the "inclined keel Hull" concept is a fine balance amongst the maximum gain in propulsive efficiency, minimum increase in hull resistance and satisfaction of other naval architectural and operational requirements. In order to make the concept economically more viable, this paper concentrates on the fore body design with the possible combination of increase of volume in its fore body to recover the expected volume loss in the aft body due to the space for larger propeller and its low wave-making resistance to minimize the efficiency loss using a well-established optimization software.
