  • The Tridosha theory, which is the cornerstone of Ayurvedic physiology governs all the functions of human body and mind. Tridosha are responsible in determining one's Prakriti and their functional status may vary in both gender of different Prakriti. No research work is available to assess the functions of Dosha by objective parameters. Therefore, this study was planned to find out the variation in functional status of different types of Pitta, using certain objective parameters, in 201 young healthy volunteers of both gender belonging to different Prakriti. Serum level of triglycerides, cholesterol, total protein and glucose level were estimated for Pachaka Pitta and hemoglobin concentration for Ranjaka Pitta, visual acuity for Alochaka Pitta, memory and reaction time for Sadhaka Pitta and RGB value for Bhrajaka Pitta were measured. Except the functioning of Bhrajaka Pitta, variation in functional status of all type of Pitta was not the same in different Prakriti of both gender. However these findings were not significant which may have occurred due to small sample size and homogenous population. Thus we propose the consideration of sex differences while planning and evaluating the studies that are based on Prakriti.

  • Ancient Indian medicine, Ayulveda that had been developed during the period from 1500B.C. to 1000A.D. was a part of Atharva Veda in Vedas, ancient religious literature. Ayurveda accumulated wisdom of life from time immemorial presents that an individual entity is required to live in harmony with nature or universe according to its constitution. Ayurveda is the medical science that grasps individual constitution through Tridosha, a combination of five primary elements(space, wind, fire, water, and earth), and systemetically explains physiological and pathological phenomena which reveal according to the constitution. In Ayurveda, diseases are classfied by various diagnostic methods, and the state of sound body, mind and spirit is maintained by several unique theraphies and regimens. Ayurveda has (once) been developed in the form of monk medicine since it was transmitted as the buddistic medicine in China and Korea. It has a lot of similarities to the oriental medicine that systematizes the theory of holistic idea on the basis that the human body is a small universe corresponding to nature. The oriental medicine and Ayurveda, two main axes of the oriental medicine arouse western medical schools' interest by their perculiar views of the disease and the system of their medical theories. And they are expected to render services to human health.

  • Background : There has been increased global interest in traditional medicine. Ayurveda and Korean medicines are most world-widely spread as Complementary and Alternative Medicine(CAM). Objectives : This review gives an overview of basic principles and commonalities of Ayurveda, Tibetan and Korean medicine. Method : I have summarized the results of the research into the following categories: basic theoies, history, physiology and pathogenesis. Result : 1. Ayurveda is the medical science that grasps individual constitution through Tridosha, a combination of five primary elements(space, wind, fire, water, and earth), and systematically explains physiological and pathological phenomena which reveal according to the constitution. 2. The theoretical basis forming the Tibetan Medicine is the substance of phlegm, bile, and wind each of which is divided into five kinds. These physiological substances can be transformed into pathological factors when certain environment is formed. 3. Ayurveda, Tibetan and Korean medicine, three main axes of the traditional medicine arouse western medical researchers' interest by their peculiar views of the disease and the system of their medical theories. And they are expected to render services to human health. Conclusions : We can expect the potential of the approaching between Ayurveda, Tibetan and Korean medicine.
