This study was performed to summarize application of ${\delta}^{13}C$, ${\delta}^{37}Cl$ and ${\delta}D$ of trichloroethylene (TCE) to studies on environmental forensic field regarding identification of TCE sources and evaluation of contribution of TCE to groundwater using data collected from literatures. ${\delta}^{13}C$, ${\delta}^{37}Cl$ and ${\delta}D$ of TCE give some information regarding sources of TCE because they show specific value according to manufacturing method. Also, TCE do not show a significant isotopic fractionation owing to adsorption and dilution. The isotopic fractionation mainly occurs by biodegradation. In addition, isotopic fractionation factor for TCE is different according to a kind of microorganism participated in biodegradation. However, the isotopic data of TCE have to be applied with chemical compositions of TCE and other hydrogeologic factors because isotopic fractionation of TCE is influenced by various factors.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the formation characteristics of CBs and CPs from TCE, aliphatic compound. The experiment was carried out in a fixed reactor during 30 min under the oxidation condition at the range of temperature, 300~$700^{\circ}C$. MSWI fly ash was used as catalyst in this study. Total amount of CBs formed greater magnitude than that of CPs overall range of reaction temperature. It is proposed that the formation of CPs was caused from hydroxylation of CBs. According to increasing temperature to $600^{\circ}C$, the yield of CBs and CPs increased but significantly decreased at $700^{\circ}C$. It is suggested that decomposition rate was faster than formation rate at the high temperature. In the homologue distribution of CBs, DCBs were major products at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and the amount of higher chlorinated compound increased to $600^{\circ}C$. Because they were formed by chlorination of lower chlorinated compounds. In case of CPs, the amount of DCPs was 90% of total amounts in both thermal formation and catalytic reaction. On the other hand it was clearly observed that the chlorination rate in catalytic reaction was higher than in thermal formation with TCE only.

A number of different nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) materials have been prepared and compared depending on the desired properties for the particular application, but different physicochemical properties of this prepared nZVI make it difficult to universally compare and standardize them to the same scale. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate a simple microplate-based colorimetric assay using 4-chlorophenol as an indicator with respect to the remediation of real treatment targets, such as trichloroethylene (TCE), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), and atrazine. Effect of nickel contents on 4-chlorophenol reduction was successfully investigated by the miniaturized colorimetric assay. In the same manner, the effect of nickel contents on dehalogenation of TCE, TCA, and atrazine was investigated and the pseudo-first-order kinetic constants were compared with the results for 4-chlorophenol. The similar pattern could be observed between 4-chlorophenol reduction obtained by colorimetric assay and TCE, TCA, atrazine reduction obtained by a traditional chromatographic method. The reaction kinetics does not match perfectly, but the degree of reaction can be estimated. Therefore, the colorimetric assay can be a useful and simple screening tool to determine nZVI reactivity toward halogenated organics before it is applied to a particular remediation site.

Three innovative technologies to remediate trichloroethylene (TCE) in situ were (or currently are being) evaluated at a TCE-contaminated groundwater site at Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), California. The three technologies all make use of groundwater recirculation to obviate the need to pump contaminated groundwater to the surface fer treatment. The first technology, which implements aerobic cometabolic bioremediation to destroy TCE in situ, successfully reduced dissolved TCE concentrations from above 1 mg/L to 20-30 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L. The second technology, in-well vapor stripping (IWVS), is capable of treating dissolved TCE at concentrations in the tens to hundreds of mg/L. Finally, the third technology, bioenhanced in-well vapor stripping (BEHIVS): is a combination of the first two technologies, and is designed to reduce very high levels of TCE (tens to hundreds of mg/L) to concentrations that meet regulatory requirements 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L). Results of field evaluations of tile first two technologies are presented, and the design of the BEHIVS system. as well as model predictions of BEHIVS performance and the current status of the technology field evaluation. is discussed.
There is a need for waste recycling. This study was carried out to investigate removal efficiency of TCE in water treatment with adsorbent made from coffee grounds which obtained after extraction of coffee through hot water. The removal of TCE in synthetic Waste water using adsorbents was examined varying dose, concentration and temperature on a laboratory scale. The results were as followed 1. As much as 95% TCE remogal was possible with adsorbent made from coffee grounds at an adsorbent dose over 2.5 g/l under the test conditions. 2. The removal rate of TCE was propotional to weight of adsorbent made from coffee grounds (0.025, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 g). 3. In the effect of temperature, as temperature of wastewater was high, the rate of removal was increased. 4. Iodine number (865 mg/g) of adsorbent made from coffee grounds was not higher than that (1123 mg/g) of adsorbent made from coconut. But, in considering adsorption capacity, Iodine number was inapplicable to adsorbent made from coffee grounds. 5. Generally, Freundlich's equation applies to adsorption in wastewater. In case of TCE, slope (1/n) was 0.83, 1.06 and intercept (k) was 456.18, 405.19 at 150, 300 ppb respectively (average r=0.904, 0.933).
The photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in $TiO_2$ aqueous suspension has been studied. $TiO_2$ photocatalysts are prepared by a sol-gel method. The dominant anatase-structure on $TiO_2$ particles is observed after calcining the $TiO_2$ get at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model is applicable to describe the photodegradation, which indicates that adsorptionof the solute on the surface of $TiO_2$ particles plays an important role in photodegradation. Photocatalysts with various transition metals (Nd, Pd and Pt) loading are tested to evaluate the effect of transition metal impurities on photodegradation. The photodegradation efficiencies with $TiO_2$ including Pt, Pd and Nd are lower than pure $TiO_2$ powder. The effect of pH is investigated and the maximum photodegradation efficiency is obtained at pH 7. In addition, the intermediates such as dichloromethane, chloroform, and trichloroethane are detected during the photodegradation of TCE.
Dense polymer membranes were made from vanous silicone polymers such as poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyneHPTMSP), poly(dimethylsiloxaneHPDMS), PTMSP- g-PDMS. These membranes were evaluated in terms of the removal of chlorinated organic hydrocarbons such as chloroform, trichloroethylene(TCE), perchloroethylene(PCE) from water by pervaporation. It was possible for membranes used in this study to remove PCE selectively which is dissolved small quantity in water among other separable solutes. PTMSP membranes exhibited a remarkable decay in permeability with time because of the free volume decreases. However, PTMSP-g-PDMS membrane underwent no physical aging and showed the stable flux behavior. From the results of the contact angle measurement, polymeric membranes used in this study showed affinity with solutes for separation and no affinity with water. The relative swelling degree was directly related to the selectivity, while it has no influence on the flux.
The photocatalytic degradation of TCE using solar energy in POFR was studied. The use of solar energy was investigated in plastic optica fiber photocatalytic reactor (POFR). In POFR, the main parameters of photocatalytic degradation of TCE were lihgt intensity, thickness of $TiO_2$-coated film on plastic fiber core, the same of total $TiO_2$-coated surface area with changed length. We studied the apparent photonic efficiency and photocatalytic degradation rate of TCE in POFR. The apparent photonic efficiency of various light intensities was decreased by an incresed intensities. The photocatalytic activities of $TiO_2$-coated optical fiber reactor system depended on the coating thickness, and total clad-stripped surface area of POF. Photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene ($C_2HCl_3$, TCE) in the gas-phase was elucidated by using $TiO_2$-coated plastic optical fiber reactor. In TCE degradation, in-situ FTIR measurement resulted in mineralization into $CO_2$.
A toluene-oxidizing strain of Pseudomanas mendocina KR1 containing toluene-4-mono-oxygenase (TMO) completely degrades TCE with the addition of toluene as a co-substrate in aerobic condition. In order to construct in situ bioremediation system for TCE degradation without any growth-stimulating nutrients or toxic inducer such as toluene, we used the carbon-starvation promoter of Pseudomonas putida MK1 (Kim, Y. et al., J. bacteriol., 1995). Upon entry into the stationary phase due to the deprivation of nutrients, this promoter is strongly induced without further cell growth. The TMO gene cluster (4.5 kb) was spliced downstream of the carbon starvation promoter of Pseudomonas putida MK1, already cloned in pUC19. TMO under the carbon starvation promoter was not expressed in E. coli cells either in stationary phase or exponential phase. For TMO expression in Pseudomonas strains, tmo and carbon starvation promoter region were recloned into a modified broad-host range vector pMMB67HES which was made from pMMB67HE(8.9 kb) by deletion of tac promoter and lacIq (about 1.5 kb). Indigo was produced by TMO under the carbon starvation promoter in a Pseudomonas strain of post-exponential phase on M9 (0.2% glucose and 1mM indole) or LB. 18% of TCE was degraded in 14 hours after entering the stationary phase at the initial concentration of 6.6 ${\mu}$M in liquid phase.
