  • The life of rolling elements depends on various factors such as operating conditions and material properties. In this work, the effect of microstructure on the rolling behavior is investigated. Specially, the deformations in the substrate regions before and after rolling are compared. It is found that rolling action causes severe flow of material in the direction opposite to the rolling direction in the case of dry rolling direction. With lubrication, the deformation is more severe at the subsurface region rather than at the surface.

  • A resin bonded copper-graphite brush was investigated to evaluate the characteristics electrical signal transmission through a sliding contact as a function of the relative amount of graphite and copper in the brush. Particular attention was given to the correlation between electrical signal fluctuation and tribological properties in an electrical sliding contact system. A ring-on-block type tribotester was used for this experiment and the ring was made from pure copper. Results showed that a copper-graphite brush at a particular composition range exhibited the most stable frictional behavior with a minimum voltage drop. The amount of voltage drop at the friction interface was affected by the surface roughness, transfer film formation at the friction interface, and the real area of contact. Microscopic observations and the surface analysis showed a good agreement with the results from this experiment. The results also indicated that the electrical signal flunctuation was directly associated with the oscillation of the coefficient of friction during sliding by nanoscale variation of contacts at the friction interface.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of environmental conditions on the rolling resistance behavior of pure silver and lead coated 52100 bearing steel. Pure silver and lead coating were produced by a thermal evaporation coating method. Experiments using a thrust ball bearing-typed rolling test-rig were performed under vacuum, dry air and controlled humidity conditions. Results showed that agglomeration of particles were prevented in vacuum environment and as it showed low and stable rolling resistance by shakedown phenomena. Also, humidity relates closely to the agglomeration of particles and increased the rolling resistance after the failure of coated layer.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the tribological behaviors of pure silver coated 52100 bearing steel. Pure silver coatings ranging from 80 nm to several micrometers were produced by a thermal evaporation coating method. Experiments using a thrust ball bearing-typed rolling test-rig were performed for the investigations of the influence of coating thickness on the tribological rolling behavior. The existence of optimum film thickness which revealed minimum rolling resistance was discovered. A careful analysis on the contact surfaces for the optimum film thickness has been performed. The contact patches produced by the transferred silver films played an important role for the rolling resistance to keep low.

  • The operating torque and tribological characteristics of the cam/tappet system in an I.C. engine have an important effect on engine efficiency. In this paper, we measured the torque of cam/tappet system with respect to the oil temperature and camshaft speed to characterize the tribological behavior. Also, accelerated test was performed to analyze the wear characteristics of cam/tappet interface. The torque of the cam/tappet system decreased with respect to camshaft speed and was not significantly affected by the oil temperature. The results of accelerated test showed that the running-in wear occurred during the tests and the center of the tappet was mainly damaged by the rolling and sliding friction.

  • The friction and wear behavior of MoS$_2$coatings was investigated using a pin and disk type tester. The experiment was conducted with silicon nitride as the pin material and MoS$_2$-on-bearing steel as the disk material under different operating conditions that included linear sliding velocities within a range of 2266 mm/sec, normal loads varying from 9.829.4 N, corresponding to maximum contact pressures of 1.782.83 Gpa, and high vacuum, medium vacuum, and ambient air atmospheric conditions. The results showed a low friction coefficient far the coating in a high vacuum, plus the friction coefficient and wear volume increased with an increased normal load. Furthermore, under high load conditions, the friction coefficient and wear volume also increased with an increased sliding velocity.

  • This paper presents the hydrodynamic effect by the journal speed, eccentricity and source positions in order to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficient. Choosing the two row source position of air bearing is different from existing investigations in the side of pressure distribution of air film because of the high speed of journal and the wedge effects by the eccentricity. These optimal choices of the two row source positions enable us to improve the performance of the film reaction force and loading force as making the high-speed spindle. In this paper, The pressure behavior in theory of air film in high speed region of journal according to the eccentricity of journal and the source positions analyzed. The theoretical analysis has been identified by experiments. The results of investigated characteristics may be applied to precision devices like ultra-precision grinding machine and ultra high-speed milling.

  • A $Si_3N_4$ tappet shim was devdoped in a direct OHC engine for the friction reduction of valve train system that contributes significantly to the engine friction in real driving condition. For commercializing $Si_3N_4$ tappet shim, it is important to reduce the machining cost. Therefore we analytically and experimentally figure out the optimum condition. Using ceramic tappet shims machined with different surface roughness, the effects of roughness on the friction loss were analyzed in view of the lubrication behavior. From this results it is shown that the friction torque of valve train system quickly drops at a certain surface roughness of ceramic tappet shim and its value remains constant despite further smoothing.

  • Reynolds equation, which describes behavior of fluid film in journal bearing, basically satisfies mass conservation. But, boundary conditions usually used with this equation, e.g. half Sommerfeld or Reynolds boundary conditions, cannot fulfill this natural law of conservation. In the case of connecting rod bearing, where applied load is dynamic and its magnitude is relatively large, such unrealistic boundary conditions have serious influence on calculation results, especially on lubricant flow rate or power dissipation which are important parameters in thermal analysis. Another important factor in the analysis of connecting rod bearing is elastic deformation of bearing support structure which is relatively flexible. In this paper, EHL analysis of connecting rod beating is performed using mass-conserving boundary condition. Elastic deformation of bearing support structure and application of mass-conserving boundary condition have significant effects on the performances of connecting rod bearing.

  • The AE measurement is one of the most convenient methods for detecting contacts between slider disk. The AE method has been widely used in the investigation of the tribology of sliding interfaces due to the convenience of using AE sensor. In this study, we examined the relationship between the AE signal and the flying height of a slider. We tried to know the influence of the disk velocity on the AE rms signal by using the AE measurement system. The experiment also gives the relationship between the take-off velocity and the disk surface state. To investigate the behavior of the slider further, the variances of the AE signal are analyzed. The results about a subambient pressure slider indicate that the increase in the magnitude of AE rms signal does not necessarily mean the slider/disk contacts.
