  • The aims of this study are to evaluate the application on the stress-strain behavior of granite Soil using Lade's double work hardening constitutive model based on the theories of elasticity and plasticity. From two different sites of construction work, two disturbed and compacted weathered granite samples which are different in partical size and degree of weathering respectively were obtained. The specimen employed were sampled at Iksan and Pochon in order to predict the constitutive model. Using the computer program based on the regression analysis, 11 soil parameters for the model were determined from the simple tests such as an isotropic compression-expansion test and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests. In conclusion, it is shown that Lade's double work hardening model gives the good applicability for processing of stress-strain, work-hardening, work-softening and soil dilatancy. Therefore, this model in its present form is applicable to the compacted decomposed granite soil.

  • Soils exhibit creep behavior in which deformation and movement proceed under a state of constant stress or load. In this study, A series of triaxial tests were performed under constant principal stress in order to interpret the undrained creep characteristics of silty sands. Although samples are non-plastic silty sands, the results of tests show that the creep deformation increasing over time. Based on the results of test, Singh-Mitchell model parameters and Generalized model coefficients were calculated. Generalized model showed slightly larger deformation in the primary creep range but secondary creep deformation was almost identical. Although Singh-Mitchell model showed relatively large errors compared to Generalized model because it uses the average of test results, but Singh-Mitchell model can be easily represented by three creep parameters.

  • A permanent deformation model was developed in this study based on the shear properties of asphalt mixtures such as cohesion and friction angle. Triaxial compressive strength (TCS) and repeated load permanent deformation (RLPD) tests on the three types of asphalt mixtures are performed at various loading and temperature conditions to correlate shear properties of asphalt mixtures to rutting performance. It is observed from the tests results that the ratio of shear stress to strength accurately identifies the mixture rutting performance. It could take care of not only mixture types but also load and temperature conditions dependences. Three different versions of the permanent deformation model based on different input levels are proposed and verified using the tests data. The proposed model based on the ratio of shear stress to strength can successfully predict the permanent deformation of various asphalt mixtures all the way up to the 10% of permanent strain including all three stages of permanent deformation in a wide range of loading and temperature conditions without changing model coefficients.

  • It has been well known that ductile fracture of steels is accelerated by triaxial stresses. The characteristics of ductile crack initiation in steels are evaluated quantitatively using two-parameters criterion based on equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality. This study provides the fundamental clarification of the effect of strength mismatching, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining, loading mode and loading rate on critical condition to initiate ductile crack from notch root using equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality based on the two-parameter criterion obtained on homogeneous specimens under static tension. The critical condition to initiate ductile crack from notch root for strength mismatched bend specimens under both static and dynamic loading would be almost the same as that for homogeneous tensile specimens with circumferential sharp notch under static loading.

  • This study aimes at investigating the applicability of single surface work - hardening model(7, 8) to clayey soils through FEM analysis. The comparison was carried out for the results between numericaL analysis and cubical triaxial tests in which confined stress was applied differently and 3-directional principal stress can be controlled. Furthermore, the results of the numerical analysis were compared with observed values of load test on the 2-dimensional model foundation composed of clayey soils. The agreement between nu- merical and observed values proved to be of high accuracy, which indicates that numeri- cal techniques developed during this study using the model can be used for the prediction of settlement, leteral displacement and pore water pressure of actual soft foundation of clayey soils.

  • The study is closely relevant to Lade's single work hardening model. This model has been shown to have good applicability to cohesive soils. However the validation of this model on the clayey soils has not been satisfactorily reported. To scrutinize the applicability of this model on clayey foundation the laboratory tests for Kwangyang clayey soils were performed using the improved cubical triaxial test apparatus designed originally by Lade. A computer program was developed by which soil parameters for the single work-hardening model can be rationally determined by deleting some dispersed test data generated usually at the initial stage of laboratory tests. And using the program numerical analysis of the cubical clayey specimens using intermediate principal stress was carried out and a good agreement between observed values and numerical results was found.

  • In this study the confining pressure dependancy of internal friction angle of rock materials are discussed based on the results of a series of large triaxial tests under consolidated-drained condition. The rock materials tested are two kinds of grain-size distribution ;one is well graded, the other poorly graded(a uniform distribution). The obtained results shows that the internal friction angle of rock materials decreases more sharply in low stress level than in high stress level, and the test constants A and b in De Mello's failure criterion on rockfill materials are A =0.683∼l.584, b=0.712∼l.015 for the well graded and A=1.145∼l.523, b=0.788∼0.880 for the poorly graded.

  • The engineering properties of the geomaterial, an essential material in construction engineering, are significantly influenced by consolidation mode, which is called inherent anisotropy. Speically cohesive soils feature the anisotropy mainly due to their flate-like minerals and chemical interactions. In this research, an experimental study was conducted for the investigation of the anisoropy. Three isotropic and four anisotropic consolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests were performed for the cohesive specimens with various stress ratios of consolidation. The effects of the consolidation mode for cohesive soils were presented and investigated in stress-strain behavior, pore water pressure, and undrained shear strength of the test results.
