  • PURPOSES : In Korea, most designs of pavement had been mainly performed by considering CBR of granular materials before KPRP(Korea Pavement Research Program) and 86 AASHTO design method were introduced. Since then, the trend of the pavement designs gradually have moved to using mechanical characteristics throughout the resilient modulus based on the test results up to recently. In this study, we should like to research the mechanical characteristics of paving materials containing Recycled aggregates through the cyclic loading triaxial compression tests. METHODS : The kinds of materials were tested; coarse grained subbase materials, refining aggregates base materials and recycled aggregates. RESULTS : The present study aims to figure out the resilient modulus of paving materials containing Recycled aggregates through the cyclic loading triaxial compression tests. CONCLUSIONS : The test results revealed that the engineering properties of the recycled aggregates were more excellent than the those of others.

  • Tests of cylindrical concrete specimens under lateral confining pressure of up to 5,000 psi were conducted for two different axial loading cases: monotonic compression and monotonic tension. The purpose of this experimental investigation is to provide stress-strain characteristics of plain concrete in triaxial stress conditions. Lateral confining pressure levels, loading rates, and strength of concrete specimens are varied as parameters. The loading rates are $34.75$\times$10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for fast, $\times$$6.95x10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for normal. and $0.579$\times$10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for slow loading cases. The concrete specimens used in the experiment have compressive strength of 3,500 psi and 6,500 psi, respectively. Findings of this experiment include dependency of the stress-strain behavior of concrete on the above parameters under two different types of loading conditions. The parametric study includes a series of 106 triaxial tests.

  • In this paper, shear strength characteristics of an unsaturated soil were compared using triaxial compression tests(CD) and modified direct shear tests and thus feasibility of the newly modified direct shear testing apparatus was confirmed. The shear strength tests of unsaturated state with a soil sample, obtained from a slope where debris flow occurred at Yangpyeong in Kyeunggi province during 2010, were performed. Both tests showed a linear relationship of matric suction with the shear strength under low level of matric suction. The apparent cohesion of the unsaturated soil was also increased linearly with increase of matric suction. As results of comparing two different testing apparatus, estimated values of shear strength parameters of unsaturated soil($c^{\prime}$, ${\phi}^b$) were slightly larger in the modified direct shear tests due to constraint effect of shear box.

  • A series of one-dimensional consolidation tests and triaxial creep tests were performed on Nansha clays, which are interactive marine and terrestrial deposits, to investigate their time-dependent behaviour. Based on experimental observations of oedometer tests, normally consolidated soils exhibit larger secondary compression than overconsolidated soils; the secondary consolidation coefficient ($C_{\alpha}$) generally gets the maximum value as load approaches the preconsolidation pressure. The postsurcharge secondary consolidation coefficient ($C_{\alpha}$') is significantly less than $C_{\alpha}$. The observed secondary compression behaviour is consistent with the $C_{\alpha}/C_c$ concept, regardless of surcharging. The $C_{\alpha}/C_c$ ratio is a constant that is applicable to the recompression and compression ranges. Compared with the stage-loading test, the single-loading oedometer test can evaluate the entire process of secondary compression; $C_{\alpha}$ varies significantly with time and is larger than the $C_{\alpha}$ obtained from the stage-loading test. Based on experimental observations of triaxial creep tests, the creep for the drained state differs from the creep for the undrained state. The behaviour can be predicted by a characteristic relationship among axial strain rate, deviator stress level and time.

  • In this study, relationships between CBR values tested by Korean Standards (KS CBR) and the elastic moduli from CU compression tests are developed for the subgrade soils. Triaxial compression and KS CBR tests are carried out on five types of samples from 15 points in Korean ezpressways. Triaxial compression tests are performed under 3 types of coifining pressures to generalize the CBR -elastic modulus relationship as functions of confining pressured and mean principal stresses. From the regression analyses of experimental results, equations for relationships between the KS CBR and elastic moduli of roadbed Boils are proposed. An equation for the relation- ship between the KS CBR and the maximum dry density of roadbed soil is also proposed.

  • This paper presents the stress-strain , volumetric strain characteristics of the Pocheon weathered residual granite soil with variation of the initial water content under drained conditions. A series of consolidated drained triaxial compressiion tests and isotrpc compression tests with various initial water content on specimens were performed. All material parameters of Lade's double work hardening model were determined by using the results of tests. Most aspects of the soil behavior measured in the triaxial compression tests were reproduced with good accuracy by the constitutive model . Therefore double work hardening model has been shown to be applicable to weathered residual granite soil.

  • Mechanical properties of Municipal Solid Wastes(MSW) and their influencing parameters were studied by using a series of triaxial compression tests and resonant column tests. The shear strength of MSW can be modeled by a bilinear failure criterion. As the unit weight increasing, cohesion and internal friction were increased linearly on semi-log scale. As the proportion of waste to soil increases, maximum shear moduli tend to decrease whereas minimum damping ratios increase. Shear moduli and damping of degradable waste are higher than those of non-degradable MSW.

  • In this study, large triaxia mpression tests of sand-gravel soils were carry out to clarify the influence of fines on shear strength characteries. Two soil specimens with/without fines that is used for construction material of dam were prepared. One was reproduced with wide range of grain size and the other was removed fines below 2mm from the one. The compaction tests proposed by our center were performed to obtain relative density of the specimens, and then each specimen was adjusted two dry density. The large triaxial compression tests were carry out under CD condition. Based on the results, the sand-gravel soils with low fines content has no effect on shear strength characteries.

  • The aim of the work descrihed in this paper is to study a characteristics of an unsaturated soil for the different matric suctions. To this end, a series of suction controlled isotropic and triaxial compression tests is conducted on silty sands. Matric suction is controlled by the axis translation technique using high air entry ceramic disk. Total volume change, air and water volume changes are measured by the device made for the experiment. The specimens are compacted using a half of Proctor compaction energy and with the water contents of 5% drier than the optimum moisture contents. Isotropic compression and triaxial compression tests are conducted on the specimen at each equilibrium state of matric suction. From test results, volume changes and deviator stresses are analyzed at each state and their relationships are formulated.

  • This paper performs laboratory experiments for borehole stability considering temperature and true triaxial stress condition, and observes a thermo-mechanical behavior of the rock under stress and temperature conditions of deep underground. China yellow sandstone and Hwangdeung granite specimens were used to perform a true triaxial compression test. Mechanical tests were carried out under nine confining pressure conditions, and thermo-mechanical tests using granite samples were carried out under six confining pressure conditions at 60-100℃. In the mechanical tests, maximum principal stress at borehole breakout was proportional to intermediate principal stress. In the thermo-mechanical tests, it was confirmed that thermal stress is added to the stress field of the borehole with the increase in temperature, resulting in additional breakout progress. To analyze the results of the laboratory experiment, Mogi-Coulomb failure criterion was used. The results of traditional triaxial compression test on cylindrical specimens and borehole breakout under true triaxial compressions matched well with Mogi-Coulomb failure criterion.
