Objectives: By introduced reciprocation motion file in dentistry, dentists benefit simple canal shaping procedure and time-saving. But, reciprocation motion generates uncomfortable vibration to doctors and patients. Because there was no study about this consideration, this study compared vibration pattern and power generated from reciprocation motion motor and conventional rotary motor. Materials & Methods: One conventional rotary motor; X-Smart (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland); and two reciprocating motors; WaveOne Motor (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and X-SMART PLUS (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland); were used in this study. Triaxial $ICP^{(R)}$ Accelerometer (Model 356A12, PCB piezotronics, New York, USA) was attached on motor's handpiece head, and was measured tri-axial vibratory acceleration with NI Sound and Vibration Assistant 2009 software (National Instruments, Texas, USA). Mean vibratory acceleration and maximum vibratory acceleration was measured on fixed position and handed position. The results of vibratory acceleration were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and multiple comparisons are made using Turkey's test at p<0.05 level. Results: Reciprocating motors showed higher mean vibratory acceleration and maximum vibratory acceleration than conventional rotary motor (p<0.05). Between reciprocating motors, X-SMART PLUS had lower mean vibratory acceleration and maximum vibratory acceleration than WaveOne Motor (p<0.05). Conclusion: Reciprocating motors generate more vibration than conventional rotary motor. Further study about effect of vibration to dentist and patient is needed. And it seems to be necessary to make a standard about vibration level in endodontic motors.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the articles using accelerometer to measure activity of daily living of patients with stroke. Methods: Depending on selection criteria, 13 studies were searched for PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane library database from February 2014 to March 2014. A total of 331 papers were searched, and 13 of these were selected. Results: In studies of 13 selected, acute, subacute, and chronic patients with stroke were enrolled. The kind of accelerometer was uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial, activity monitor. Measurement activities were mainly arm activity, walking activity, and attachment sites were also various depending on the measurement activities. A measured variable was the total number of activities, the movement speed of the patients, ratio between affected and non-affected, and motion analysis. The result indicated that significant correlation with the other assessment tools in all studies. Conclusions: Accelerometer will be applied with a tool for measuring activity of daily living of patients with stroke, depending on activities characteristics. Further, we need accelerometer studies to apply with a variety of assessment in clinical practice or community settings.

This paper presents the design concept of an intrinsic continuum robot for safe man-machine interface and characteristic behaviors of its end-effector based on real experiments. Since pneumatic artificial muscles having similar antagonistic actuation to human muscles are used for main backbones of the proposed robot as well as in the role of the actuating devices, variable stiffness of robotic joints can be available in the actual environment. In order to solve the inherent shortcoming of an intrinsic continuum robot due to bending motion of the backbone materials, a Kalman filter scheme based on a triaxial accelerometer and a triaxial gyroscope was proposed to conduct an attitude estimation of the end-effector of the robot. The experimental results verified that the proposed method was effective in estimating the attitude of the end-effector of the intrinsic continuum robot.
The purpose of this study was to compare metabolic energy expenditure with the computed kinetic energy for different speeds of walking and running over the treadmill and to find the relevance for individual and group equation by performing a statistical analysis, Bland-Altman plot. Seven male subjects participated, and they were required to walk and run on the treadmill with the gas analyzer and triaxial accelerometer. Walking speeds were 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 km/h and running speeds were 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 km/h respectively. Kinetic energy was calculated by the integration of acceleration data and compared with the metabolic energy measured by a gas analyzer. Correlation coefficients showed relatively good between the measured metabolic energy and the calculated kinetic energy. In addition, a dramatic increase in kinetic energy was also observed at the transition speed of walking and running, and two standard deviations in Bland-Altman plot, derived from the difference between measured and predicted values, were 1.14, 2.53, 2.93, 1.80, 2.80, 0.60 and 2.48 respectively. It was showed that there is no difference for methods of how to predict the kinetic energy expenditure for individual and group even though people had each different physical characteristic.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of increased running speed on the magnitude of impact shock attenuation in high frequency (9~20 Hz) at support phase on the treadmill running. Method: Twenty-four healthy male heel-toe runners participated in this study. Average age, height, mass, and preference running speed were 23.43±3.78 years, 176.44±3.38 cm, 71.05±9.04 kg, and 3.0±0.5 m/s, respectively. Three triaxial accelerometer (Noraxon, USA) were mounted to the tuberosity of tibia, PSIS (postero-superior iliac spine), and forehead to collect acceleration signals, respectively. Accelerations were collected for 20 strides at 1,000 Hz during treadmill (Bertec, USA) running at speed of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 m/s. Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of three acceleration signals was calculated to use in transfer function describing the gain and attenuation of impact shock between the tibia and PSIS, and forehead. One-way ANOVA were performed to compare magnitude of shock attenuation between and within running speeds. The alpha level for all statistical tests was .05. Results: No significant differences resulted for magnitude of the vertical and resultant impact shock attenuation between the tibia and PSIS, and forehead between running speeds. However, significant differences within running speed were found in magnitude of the vertical shock attenuation between tibia and PSIS, tibia and forehead at speed of 2.5, 3.0 m/s, respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, it might be conjectured that muscles covering the knee and ankle joints and shoe's heel pad need to strengthen to keep the lower extremities from injuries by impact shock at relatively fast running speed that faster than preferred running speed.

As a kind of personal lifelog data, activity data have been considered as one of the most compelling information to understand the user's habits and to calibrate diagnoses. In this paper, we proposed a robust algorithm to sampling rates for human activity recognition, which identifies a user's activity using accelerations from a triaxial accelerometer in a smartphone. Although a high sampling rate is required for high accuracy, it is not desirable for actual smartphone usage, battery consumption, or storage occupancy. Activity recognitions with well-known algorithms, including MLP, C4.5, or SVM, suffer from a loss of accuracy when a sampling rate of accelerometers decreases. Thus, we start from particle swarm optimization (PSO), which has relatively better tolerance to declines in sampling rates, and we propose PSO with an adaptive boundary correction (ABC) approach. PSO with ABC is tolerant of various sampling rate in that it identifies all data by adjusting the classification boundaries of each activity. The experimental results show that PSO with ABC has better tolerance to changes of sampling rates of an accelerometer than PSO without ABC and other methods. In particular, PSO with ABC is 6%, 25%, and 35% better than PSO without ABC for sitting, standing, and walking, respectively, at a sampling period of 32 seconds. PSO with ABC is the only algorithm that guarantees at least 80% accuracy for every activity at a sampling period of smaller than or equal to 8 seconds.
This paper presents a methodology for a fall detection using the feature extraction method based on the neural network with weighted fuzzy membership functions (NEWFM). The distributed non-overlap area measurement method selects the minimized number of input features by removing the worst input features one by one. Nineteen number of wavelet transformed coefficients captured by a triaxial accelerometer are selected as minimized features using the non-overlap area distribution measurement method. The proposed methodology shows that sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy are 95%, 97.25%, and 96.125%, respectively.

The problem of elderly people with weak physical health has become a very important issue in the aging society. Elderly people with very low judgment and decision-making skills often falls because of the degradation of the strength and balance. Due to the fall triggered off fractures, parenchyma damage, and casualties, generally fast emergency treatment is needed. In this paper, an automatic fall detection system consisting of a triaxial accelerometer and tilt sensor. Using the fall system, the performance of the system was analyzed in many situations. The experimental results showed more than 92% analytical skills.
