  • Purpose: In the present study, the actual management state of trial contact lenses and lens care products in local optical shops was surveyed and analyzed to reduce the risk of lens complication possibly induced by neglecting lens care. Methods: The feeling of contact lens wearers during the wear of trial contact lenses was surveyed. Futhermore, the actual management state of trial contact lenses such as cosmetic lens and RGP lens and lens care products was also investigated by surveying opticians who trade contact lenses in local optical shops. Results: It was found that consumers trusted the sanitary conditions of the lens since trial cosmetic contact lens and RGP lens were cleaned before and after trails by over 98% of opticians in local optical shops. For trial cosmetic lens, cleaning with normal saline, multipurpose solution for soft lens and combination of saline and multipurpose solution were 38.5%, 40.5% and 21%, respectively, before trials. After trials, cosmetic lenses were cleaned with normal saline, multipurpose solution for soft lens and a combination of saline and multipurpose solution were 13%, 75%, and 12%, respectively. On the other hand, cleaning with normal saline, multipurpose solution for RGP lens and combination of saline and multipurpose solution were 28.5%, 38.5% and 33%, respectively, before trying trial RGP lens. After trials, RGP lenses were cleaned with normal saline, multipurpose solution for RGP lens and a combination of saline and multipurpose solution were 2.5%, 70%, and 27.5%, respectively, indicating that relatively many opticians followed the lens cleaning regimen. In local optical shops, the cleaning trial cosmetic lens was mainly conducted at every 10 days or a month and the washing cycle of cosmetic lens case was in a month or 2~3 months. The cleaning interval of trial RGP lens was primarily in a month or 2~3 months. For those lens cases, more than 75% of opticians washed them with a surfactant and then rinsed with cold water. The storing periods of lens care products were primarily in a week for saline and in a month and 2~3 months indicating that storing period of lens care products was relatively well-kept in local optical shops. Conclusions: It is thought that the concern about any microbial infection is not that high since trial contact lenses and lens care products were generally well-managed by opticians in local optical shops from the results above. However, better public eye health and better public confidence in opticians may be possible if further strengthen in avoidance of lens cleaning with saline, keep of cleaning cycles within 2 weeks and rinsing of lens cases with hot water happens.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide improvements and standards of trial lens, in a situation that there is a lack of standards of trial lens set that have been used for self-conscious refraction test after helm refraction test at about 5,000 opticians, ophthalmologic clinics and hospitals, and contact-lens shops, that there is a lot of discrepancies between refraction specified and the actual power, and that there is no regulation of optical tolerance error. For the study, opticians who have used Trial lens set were asked to participate in a questionnaire survey through continuing education, and divided into those who have used domestic lens and those who have used imported lens, 5 opticians each for less than 5 years, 5 to 10 years, more than 10 years. The measurement of both refraction specified and the actual diopter was compared to Japan Industrial Standards(JIS T4402). As a result of comparative analysis, more than 80% of respondents have had reliability on the refraction of trial lens they had used, indicating that they have never measured the refraction specified and the actual diopter after buying them. Besides, Korean Industrial Standards(KS P4402) has been imperfect in diopter range since it was legislated in 1979. More than 95% of respondents have been unsatisfied with optometry. Also, it has indicated that refraction error is more frequent in long-term-used trial lens. The conclusion is that it is necessary to standardize trial lens set and that it is required to add lens to lens set provided under KS P4402. Moreover, it is necessary to have supervisory agency for a standardization of trial lens. I hope that both domestic lens and imported lens, as in German and Japan, will be tested to find whether they meet optical tolerance error and standard trial lens will be distributed. Good optic inspection is required for the improvement and management of eye health and optical function, and the same standard trial lens set should be used. whoever is tested. Also, I hope that trial lens set will be specified within standards and tolerance error.

  • We polymerized material of AA(Acrylic acid) and BMA(butyl methacrylate) to make up for the weak points of hydrogel contact lens. The synthesis process of silicone synthesis is as follows. Acrylate-PDMS(Polydimethylsiloxane)-Urethane prepolymer was composed after Diisocynate reacted with HEMA(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) under the catalyst and it reacted again with bis(hydroxyalkyl) terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) with high oxygen transmissibility characteristics. HEMA(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) was used to make prepolymer that can be polymerized and the urethane was used to improve elasticity and oxygen transmissibility, copolymerization was performed with conventional hydrogel contact lens materials to make silicone hydrogel contact lens with higher oxygen transmissibility. For manufacturing of contact lens, We added BMA(Butyl methacrylate) with better elasticity and flexibility, and AA(Acrylic acid) with higher moisturizing to used contact lens materials. AIBN (Azobis2-methylpropionitrile) as initiator and EGDMA(Ethylene Glycol Dimethacrylat) as crosslinking agent were used and the lens with higher oxygen transmissibility and better moisturizing were manufactured complying with basic contact lens properties, which have several combination trial of each monomer characteristics. Compounding SN which included SILICONE, HEMA, NVP and EGDMA etc was showed by swelling ratio of 9.38% and water content of 23.7%. SN was showed by swelling ratio of 9.38%, water content of 23.7% and a visible ray transmissibility of 89%. SB which added BMA in the SN was showed by swelling ratio of 12.50%, water content of 18.56% and a visible ray transmissibility of 88%. SAB which added both AA and BMA in the SN was showed by swelling ratio of 8.33%, water content of 12.93% and a visible ray transmissibility of 88%.

  • Protein deposit buildup on soft contact lenses(SCLs) is responsible for discomfort, optical defects and is even damaging to the eye. To better understand protein deposit formation on SCL, we investigated the pattern of protein attachment on patient-worn SCLs and the effect of the protein on the contact angle of SCLs and the transmission of visible light. This study used data from a clinical trial where subjects wore either daily-wear SCL(etafilcon A, N=40) for various period up to 14 days, or extended-wear SCL(balafilcon A, N=40) for 8 h day or night. The adsorption of protein in daily-wear SCLs was significantly increased in patient-worn time-dependent manner although the lenses were cleaned everyday by using the multi-purpose SCL solution. After 2 weeks wearing, the protein on the SCL influenced the contact angle of the lenses. Furthermore, the transmission of visible light of the lenses decreased up to almost 7%. Extended-wear SCLs worn during the closed eye condition were found to deposit significantly more protein than SCLs worn during the open eye condition. The amounts of protein adsorbed both after daily SCL wear and after overnight SCL wear were not affected the contact angle and the transmission of visible light of the lenses. The protein deposit buildup on SCL related to the corneal temperature and pH of tear fluid.

  • Conclusion: The results of this study are encouraging for the development of a set of interpretable diagnostic criteria for a reasonably reliable identification of some species. The present study has been limited in the characteristics studied and was made on relatively poor photography. Further study on high quality photography, over wider areas and including such additional characteristics as crown texture and shadow intensity should prove useful. A preliminary examination has been made of some photo-image characteristics of a number of important tree species on large scale (1:9,000) contact prints of panchromatic mm. The characteristics studied were crown image tone, and shape. Image tone was estimated against a standard grey-scale and shows within-species consistency and a range between species. Crown shapes were subjectively assessed but there appears to be a within-species consistency and interpretable between-species differences. The results of this trial suggest that it should be practicable to make a number of important species distinctions by photo-interpretation with a useful degree of reliability. Other characteristics beside those studied might be usefully examined. Photography: Hand-printed glossy contact prints of vertical 1:9,000 scale panchromatic photography of Kwangnung Experimental Forest flown May 1964. The filter used is unknown (probably minus-blue). The camera is unknown but was probably a military type K-17 or K-22 with 6"(apostfophy) lens. The photography shows notably poor resolution. Species: 143 individual trees ranging through 11 species (7 softwood, 4 hardwood) were included in the study. A range of size classes were included for each species.

  • Purpose: To emphasize the necessity of post-fitting by follow-up test, the mis-alignment was analyzed after initial wearing of toric soft contact lenses (TSCL). Methods: After trial contact lenses were worn to 87 eyes with myopic astigmatism for 1 week, we observed the alignment of axis mark on trial contact lenses using slit lamp and corrected the rotated axis by method of LARS. After final fitting, rotation ratio, rotation degree and rotation position were analyzed compared to initial prescription divided to amount of cylinderical and spherical powers. Results: Rotation ratio of TSCL's axis was increased as increment of both cylinderical powers and (-)spherical powers. An average of rotation degree was $10^{\circ}{\sim}13^{\circ}$ which was not related to amount of their powers. Rotation position of TSCL's axis was more to temporal than to nasal. Conclusions: Because mis-alignment of axis after TSCL wearing induce the poor sight, adjustment of axial alignment as a result of follow-up must be performed.
