The goal of this study is to conceptually orientate optimized layouts of outrigger belt trusses which are in widespread use today in the design of tall buildings by strut-and-tie truss models utilizing a topology optimization method. In this study unknown strut-and-tie models are realized by using a typical SIMP method of topology optimization methods. In tradition strut-and-tie model designs find the appropriate strut-and-tie trusses along force paths with respect to elastic stress distribution, and then engineers or designers determine the most proper truss models by experience and intuition. It is linked to a trial-and-error procedure based on heuristic strategies. The presented strut-and tie model design by using SIMP provides that belt truss models are automatically and robustly produced by optimal layout information of struts-and-ties conforming to force paths without any trial-and-error. Numerical applications are studied to verify that outrigger belt trusses for tall buildings are optimally chosen by the proposed method for both static and dynamic responses.

This study was carried out for the reliability of PD(Partial Discharge) pattern recognition. For the pattern recognition, the database for PD was established by use of self-designed insulation defects which occur and were mostly critical in GIS(Gas Insulated Switchgear). The acquired database was analyzed to distinguish patterns by means of PRPD(Phase Resolved Partial Discharge) method and stored to the form with to unite the average amplitude of PD pulse and the number of PD pulse as the input data of neural network. In order to prove the performance of genetic algorithm combined with neural network, the neural networks with trial-and-error method and the neural network with genetic algorithm were trained by same training data and compared to the results of their pattern recognition rate. As a result, the recognition success rate of defects was 93.2% and the neural network train process by use of trial-and-error method was very time consuming. The recognition success rate of defects, on the other hand, was 100% by applying the genetic algorithm at neural network and it took a relatively short time to find the best solution of parameters for optimization. Especially, it could be possible that the scrupulous parameters were obtained by genetic algorithm.

Optimal mount position of a front pillar trim considering heat resistant characteristics can be determined by two methods. One is conventional approximate optimization method which uses the statistical design of experiments (DOE) and response surface method (RSM). Generally, approximated optimum results are obtained through the iterative process by a trial and error. The quality of results depends seriously on the factors and levels assigned by a designer. The other is a methodology derived from previous work by the authors, which is called sequential design of experiments (SDOE), to reduce a trial and error procedure and to find an appropriate condition for using artificial neural network (ANN) systematically. An appropriate condition is determined from the iterative process based on the analysis of means. With this new technique and ANN, it is possible to find an optimum design accurately and efficiently.
Reinforcement learning is a learning method that uses trial-and-error to perform Learning by interacting with dynamic environments. It is classified into online reinforcement learning and delayed reinforcement learning. In this paper, we propose an online reinforcement learning system (ONRELS : Outline REinforcement Learning System). ONRELS updates the estimate-value about all the selectable (state, action) pairs before making state-transition at the current state. The ONRELS learns by interacting with the compressed environments through trial-and-error after it compresses the state space of the mage environments. Through experiments, we can see that ONRELS can search the shortest path faster than Q-learning using TD-ewor and $Q(\lambda{)}$-learning using $TD(\lambda{)}$ in the maze environments.

A neural network with one or more layers of hidden units can be trained using the well-known error
back propagation algorithm. According to this algorithm, the synaptic weights of the network are updated
during the training by propagating back the error between the expected output and the output provided
by the network. However, the error back propagation algorithm is characterized by slow convergence and
the time required for training and, in some situation, can be trapped in local minima.
A theoretical formulation of a new fast learning method based on tabu search method is presented in
this paper. In contrast to the conventional back propagation algorithm which is based solely on the modification
of connecting weights of the network by trial and error, the present method involves the calculation
of the optimum weights of neural network. The effectiveness and versatility of the present method
are verified by the XOR problem. The present method excels in accuracy compared to that of the conventional
method of fixed values.
This paper investigates the complex permittivity of foam materials using the rectangular waveguide. The transmission coefficients of materials inserted in the waveguide are measured with a network analyzer and calculated from the equivalent transmission line model. We use the trial and error method in the acquisition of the complex permittivity.
Objectives . In large-scale field trials, randomization by cluster is frequently used because of the administrative convenience, a desire to reduce the effect of treatment contamination, and the need to avoid ethical issues that might of otherwise arise. Cluster randomization trials are experiments in which intact social unit, e.g., families, schools, cities, rather than independent individuals are randomly allocated to intervention groups. The positive correlation among responses of subjects from the same cluster is in matter in cluster randomization. This thesis is to compare the results of three randomization methods by standard error of estimator of treatment effect. Methods : We simulated cholesterol data varing the size of the cluster and the level of the correlation in clusters and analyzed the effect of cholesterol-lowering agent. Results : In intra-cluster randomization the standard error of the estimator of treatment effect is smallest relative to that in inter-cluster randomization and that in individual randomization. Conclusions : Infra-cluster randomization is the most efficient in its standard error of estimator of treatment effect but other factor should be considered when selecting a specific randomization method.

This paper shows the optimal design methodology for the fluid engine mount by the artificial life algorithm. The design has been commonly modified by trial and error because there is many design parameters that can be varied in order to minimize transmissibility at the desired fundamental resonant and notch frequencies. The application of trial and error method to optimization of the fluid mount is a great work. Many combinations of parameters are possible to give us the desired resonant and notch frequencies, but the question is which combination Provides the lowest resonant peak and notch depth. In this study the enhanced artificial life algorithm is applied to get the desired fundamental resonant and notch frequencies of a fluid mount and to minimize transmissibility at these frequencies. The present hybrid algorithm is the synthesis of and artificial life algorithm with the random tabu (R-tabu) search method. The hybrid algorithm has some advantages, which is not only faster than the conventional artificial life algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find all globa1 optimum solutions. The results show that the performance of the optimized mount compared with the original mount is improved significantly.
The PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller is widely used in the industries for more than fifty years with the well known Ziegler-Nichols tuning method and others varieties. However, most of the PID controller being used in the real practice still require trial and error adjustment for each process after the tuning method is done, which is consuming of time and needs the operator experiences to obtain the best results for the controller parameter. In order to reduce the inconvenience in the controller tuning, this paper presents a design of an automatic PID controller parameter analyzer being used as a support instrument in the industrial process control. This analyzer is designed based on the tuning formula of Dahlin to synthesize the PID controller parameter. Using this analyzer, the time to be spent in the trial and error procedures and its complexity can be neglected. Experimental results using PID controller parameter synthesized from this analyzer to the liquid level control plant model and the fluid flow control plant model show that the responses of the controlled systems can be efficiently controlled without any difficulty in mathemathical computation.

This paper presents a TS (Takagi-Sugeno) type FLC (Fuzzy Logic Controller) with only 3 rules. The choice of parameters of FLC is very difficult job on design FLC controller. Therefore, the choice of appropriate linguistic variable is an important part of the design of fuzzy controller. However, since fuzzy controller is nonlinear, it is difficult to analyze mathematically the affection of the linguistic variable. So this choice is depend on the expert's experience and trial and error method. In the design of the system, we use a variety of response characteristics like stability, rising time, overshoot, settling time, steady-state error. In particular, it is important for a stable system design to predict the steady-state error because the system's steady-state response of the system is related to the overall quality. In this paper, we propose the method to choose the consequence linear equation's parameter of T-S type FLC in the view of steady-state error. The parameters of consequence linear equations of FLC are tuned according to the system error that is the input of FLC. The full equation of T-S type FLC is presented and using this equation, the relation between output and parameters can represented. As well as the FLC parameters of consequence linear equations affect the stability of the system, it also affects the steady-state error. In this study, The system according to the parameter of consequence linear equations of FLC predict the steady-state error and the method to remove the system's steady-state error is proposed using the prediction error value. The simulation is carried out to determine the usefulness of the proposed method.
