  • Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is a major cause of upper and lower respiratory tract illness in infants and young children worldwide. Despite its importance as a respiratory pathogen, there is currently no licensed vaccine for prophylaxis of HRSV infection. There are several hurdles complicating the development of a RSV vaccine: 1) incomplete immunity to natural RSV infection leading to frequent re-infection, 2) immature immune system and maternal antibodies of newborn infants who are the primary subject population, and 3) imbalanced Th2-biased immune responses to certain vaccine candidates leading to exacerbated pulmonary disease. After the failure of an initial trial featuring formalin-inactivated virus as a RSV vaccine, more careful and deliberate efforts have been made towards the development of safe and effective RSV vaccines without vaccine-enhanced disease. A wide array of RSV vaccine strategies is being developed, including live-attenuated viruses, protein subunit-based, and vector-based candidates. Though licensed vaccines remain to be developed, our great efforts will lead us to reach the goal of attaining safe and effective RSV vaccines in the near future.

  • It have been proceeded that research of analysis of extrusion process using porthole die. recently it is performed partly through the finite element method in the non steady state that design variables. The subject of this research is integrity improvement of speaker body which is being produced by porthole die extrusion in my country. Extrusion load of speaker case, and welding pressure of billet in the chamber are estimated by the means of rigid-plasticity finite element method. And then extrusion of trial was performed to estimate the validity of FE analysis.

  • This paper describes recently developed PC based Aids to Navigation Training Simulator (AtoN-TS) using Virtual Reality Modeling language (VRML). The purpose of AtoN-TS is to train entry-level cadets to reduce the amount of sea-time training. The practical application procedure of VR technology to implement AtoN-TS is represented. The construction method of virtual waterway world, according to the guidelines of International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) is proposed. Design concepts and simulation experiments are also discussed. Results from trial tests and evaluations by subject assessment, provide practical insight on the importance of AtoN-TS.

  • Alginic acid-silica hydrogel films was prepared for testing as protective coating materials for PTFE OD membranes. Unprotected hydrophobic membranes are subject to wet-out when contacted by surface-active agents. Films were characterised using SEM, XRD, DSC, mechanical strength measurements, and water-swelling measurements. In OD trials using coated membranes, no wet-out occurred over the 15 h duration of three consecutive 5 h OD trials using orange oil-water mixtures. In the case of detergent solutions, the coating afforded protection to the membrane for 4-5 h. In a separate trial, no wet-out occurred when the coated side of the membrane was placed in contact with 1.2 wt % orange oil for 72 hours.

  • The braking hose in the automotive hydraulic braking system exhibits the complicated anisotropic large deformation while its movable end is moving along the cyclic path according to the steering and bump/rebound motions of vehicle. The complicated large deformation may cause not only the interference with other adjacent automotive parts but also the durability problem resulting in the fatal microcraking. In this regard, the design of high-durable braking hose with the interference-free layout becomes a hot issue in the automotive industry. However, since it has been traditionally relied on the cost-/time-consuming trial and error experiments, the cost- and time-effective optimum design method that can replace the experiment is highly desirable. Meanwhile, the hose deformed configuration and fatigue life are different for different hose cyclic paths, so that their characteristic investigation becomes an important preliminary research subject. As a preliminary step for developing the optimum design methodology, we in this study investigate the hose deformed configuration and the fatigue life for four representative hose cyclic paths.

  • In clinical trials, it is important to have well designed case report forms (CRF) in order to obtain good quality of data. If CRF design at the first stage of your study goes wrong, after all efforts have been made, you may find practical difficulties in data analysis at the final stage of your study because of incomplete or wrong information. In this paper, the following rules fundamental to CRF design are introduced: rules in general, rules of format or style, categorized responses, forms with multiple records per subject, and international studies. Investigators are well aware of research goals, however sometimes they do not know how to express it on CRF. If they understand the rules fundamental to CRF design, time for CRF development will be saved and CRF completeness will be enhanced.

  • This study was performed to define the effects of Far Infrared Ray Radiation Fabrics as summer garments during outdoor work by human trial. One healthy male subject was volunteered for this study. Experimental garments consisted of three kinds of trousers (Cotton, Cotton/linen blended, Far Infrared Ray Radiation Fabric/wool blended) and basic garments (panty, socks, shirts, and dress shirts). The measurements were rectal temp., skin temp., microclimate inside clothing, heart rate, subjective sensation etc. The results were as follows : 1. Rectal temperature showed the lowest in Far Infrared Ray Radiation Fabrics among 3 garments. 2. Skin temperature (forehead, chest abdomen temp.) and mean skin temperature were lower in Far Infrared Ray Radiation Fabrics than in others, especially during early stage of work. 3. Heart rate showed lower value in Far Infrared Ray Radiation Fabrics than in others but there was no significance among the garments. 4. Humidity inside clothing and total weight loss showed the highest value in Far Infrared Ray Radiation Fabrics.

  • The phenomena of memory have been shown to come out early in life and to develop drastically for early childhood. Therefore, the purpose of this study were examine the development of memory of Korean children and also to see the memory span of Korean children. the subjects in this study were 80 children (male and female each 40 children) from age 3 to age 6. These subjects were devide into two age groups (3~4 age, 5~6 age). the stimulus materials were the numbers and the words. The numbers in this study were chosen from the number problems of WISC. The 42 words which consisted of two phonemes were selected. The number of items was 3 to 9 on the first through the last trial. altogether 14 trials, 7 trials for numbers and 7 trials for words, were given to each subject. Free recall method was sued. The following conclusions could be made. 1. The memory span of Korean early childhood increased as the age of the children increased. 2. The primacy effect was appeared when the age increased. Therefore, rehearsal was appeared as the age of the Korean early childhood increased.

  • This paper explores the geometrical non-linear behavior of the simply supported tapered beams subject to the trapezoidal distributed load and end moments. In order to apply the Bernoulli -Euler beam theory to this tapered beam, the bending moment equation on any point of the elastical is obtained by the redistribution of trapezoidal distributed load. On the basis of the bending moment equation and the BErnoulli-Euler beam theory, the differential equations governging the elastical of such beams are derived and solved numerically by using the Runge-Jutta method and the trial and error method. The three kinds of tapered beams (i.e. width, depth and square tapers) are analyzed in this study. The numerical results of non-linear behavior obtained in this study from the simply supported tapered beams are appeared to be quite well according to the results from the reference . As the numerical results, the elastica, the stress resultants and the load-displacement curves are given in the figures.

  • This paper discusses the theoretical researches subject to elastic buckling problems of the structures. The purpose is to ensure the characteristic of buckling be true by arc-length method and the finite element method. The difficulties in processes calculating the equilibrium curve after buckling is to get the equilibrium owe near singular point at which the determinant of stiffness matrix is zero. The purpose of the load-displacement curve is to determine the buckling load of the structure, and further to get the information about the characteristic after buckling. Here, this paper expresses the incremental solution at particular point by the linear combination of both homogeneous mode and particular mode, then uses the method which gets the unknown parameter including this function, through trial-and-error method including modified N-R convergence process. Finally, this paper describes the multiple bifurcation of truss dome as the numerical examples according to this algorithm.
