  • The root-locus method is often employed when a controller is designed to find controller gain. It is usually used to determine one parameter gain while most controllers for industrial applications have more than one controller gain. For example PID controller has three controller gains, i.e. P, I, and D gains. Thus the conventional root-locus technique cannot complete the design of a controller with more than one controller gain. One way to overcome this drawback has been to apply the root-locus technique for one parameter while other parameters are assumed to be proportional to the parameter or to be constant. However this approach could lead to limited performance of the controller and if we try to adjust the proportional ratio or constants then it could be a long and tedious process of trial and error. Thus it is required to find an effective method for the root-locus technique to design controllers with more than one parameter. To this end this paper proposes an extended root-locus method for controllers with two parameters. In this paper Matlab is used as a computation tool to show the effectiveness of our method by solving examples numerically. As a result we obtained an extended root-locus illustrated in two-dimensional space for a control system with two parameters. The paper then presents how to find two controller gains based on this result of the extended root-locus. The main idea is that we can find the parameters by approaching the desired poles. It is expected that the proposed idea will help control engineers to easily design control systems using the root-locus technique, resulting in more accurate and faster control systems. Note that the extended root-locus idea can be applied to controller design problems with multiple parameters.

  • Abstract: A minimum commitment method(MCM) was applied to predict the long-term creep rupture life for type 316LN stainless steel(SS). Lots of the creep-rupture data for the type 316LN SS were collected through world-wide literature surveys and the experimental data of KAERI. Using these data, the long-term creep rupture life above ${10}^5$ hour was predicted by means of the MCM. In order to obtain the most appropriate value for the constant A being used in the MCM equation, trial and error method was used for the wide ranges from -0.12 to 0.12, and the best value was determined by using the coefficient of determination, $R^2$ which is a statistical parameter. A suitable value for the A in type 316LN stainless steel was found to be at -0.02 ~ -0.05 ranges. It is considered that the MCM will be superior in creep-life prediction to commonly-used timetemperature parametric method, because the P(T) and G($\sigma$) functions are determined from the regression method based on experimental data.

  • Statement of problem : It is difficult to obtain a good titanium casting body using the traditional sprue design because of high melting point of Ti, and the low fluidity and high reactivity of molten Ti. Purpose : A new sprue design for titanium casting bodies needs more trial and error. In order to decrease the number of trial and error, computer simulation(MAGMASOFT, Magmasoft Giessereitechnologie GmbH, Achen, Germany) was used to optimize sprue design in U-shaped implant superstructures. Material and method : Five kinds of sprue were examined for the design of the sprue former for titanium casting: Sprue design A(sprue length 4 mm, rectangular shape, 4 sprues), Sprue design B(sprue length 4 mm. round shape. radius 2 mm, 7 sprues), Sprue design C (sprue length 2 mm, round shape, radius 2 mm, 7 sprues). Sprue design D (sprue length 2 mm, cone shape, large radius 3mm. small radius 2mm, 7 sprues), and Sprue design E( sprue length 2 mm. one unit channel shape). Sprue design F(sprue length 2mm, one unit channel shape) was also examined for the design of the customized sprue former in the Biotan system(Schutz Dental Gmbh, Germany). The casting bodies were taken in Sprue design A, Sprue design D, Sprue design E, and Sprue design F in the Biotan casting system. The numerically predicted defects were compared with the experimental dental castings by the radiographic and sectional view observations. Results : 1. According to the result of computer simulation, turbulence during mold filling was decreased in the sequence of Sprue design F, Sprue design E, Sprue design D, Sprue design C, Sprue design B, and Sprue design A. 2. The calculated solidification time contours indicate that hot spot was moved from the casting body to the sprue button in the sequence of Sprue design A, Sprue design B, Sprue design C, Sprue design D, and Sprue design E. The filling pattern of Sprue design F was similar to that of Sprue design E. 3 The predicted filling pattern shows that less turbulence was found in the customized sprue former than in the standard sprue former. 4. According to the results of the radiographic and cross sectional observations, casting defects less than 1mm were found at the center of a casting body with Sprue design E and Sprue design F. However, larger casting defects of 4mm were found in a casting with Sprue design A. 5. The predicted casting porosity was similar to that of the real casting. Conclusion : One unit channel-type and customized sprue former can be recommended. Further research and developement of various sprue designs using computer simulation in necessary to optimize casting design, in order to reduce the formation of casting defects in implant titanuim super-structures.

  • There are many cases of production processes which intermittently produce several different kinds of products for stock through one set of physical facility. In this case, an important question is what size of production run should be prduced once we do set-up for a product in order to minimize the total cost, that is, the sum of the set-up, carrying, and stock-out costs. This problem is used to be called scheduling of multiple products through a single facility in the production management field. Despite the very common occurrence of this type of production process, no one has yet devised a method for determining the optimal production schedule. The purpose of this study is to develop quantitative analytical models which can be used practically and give us rational production schedules. The study is to show improved models with application to a can-manufacturing plant. In this thesis the economic production quantity (EPQ) model was used as a basic model to develop quantitative analytical models for this scheduling problem and two cases, one with stock-out cost, the other without stock-out cost, were taken into consideration. The first analytical model was developed for the scheduling of products through a single facility. In this model we calculate No, the optimal number of production runs per year, minimizing the total annual cost above all. Next we calculate No$_{i}$ is significantly different from No, some manipulation of the schedule can be made by trial and error in order to try to fit the product into the basic (No schedule either more or less frequently as dictated by) No$_{i}$, But this trial and error schedule is thought of inefficient. The second analytical model was developed by reinterpretation by reinterpretation of the calculating process of the economic production quantity model. In this model we obtained two relationships, one of which is the relationship between optimal number of set-ups for the ith item and optimal total number of set-ups, the other is the relationship between optimal average inventory investment for the ith item and optimal total average inventory investment. From these relationships we can determine how much average inventory investment per year would be required if a rational policy based on m No set-ups per year for m products were followed and, alternatively, how many set-ups per year would be required if a rational policy were followed which required an established total average inventory inventory investment. We also learned the relationship between the number of set-ups and the average inventory investment takes the form of a hyperbola. But, there is no reason to say that the first analytical model is superior to the second analytical model. It can be said that the first model is useful for a basic production schedule. On the other hand, the second model is efficient to get an improved production schedule, in a sense of reducing the total cost. Another merit of the second model is that, unlike the first model where we have to know all the inventory costs for each product, we can obtain an improved production schedule with unknown inventory costs. The application of these quantitative analytical models to PoHang can-manufacturing plants shows this point.int.

  • Crashworthy fuel cells have been widely implemented to rotorcraft and rendered a great contribution for improving the survivability of crews and passengers. Since the embryonic stage of military rotorcraft history began, the US army has developed and practised a detailed military specification documenting the unique crashworthiness requirements for rotorcraft fuel cells to prevent most fatality due to post-crash fire. Foreign manufacturers have followed their long term experience to develop their fuel cells, and have reflected the results of crash impact tests on the trial-and-error based design and manufacturing procedures. Since the crash impact test itself takes a long-term preparation efforts together with costly fuel cell specimens, a series of numerical simulations of the crash impact test with digital mock-ups is necessary even at the early design stage to minimize the possibility of trial-and-error with full-scale fuel cells. In the present study a number of numerical simulations on fuel cell crash impact tests are performed with a crash simulation software, Autodyn. The resulting equivalent stresses are further analysed to evaluate a number of appropriate design parameters and the artificial neural network and simulated annealing method are simultaneously implemented to optimize the crashworthy performance of fuel cells.

  • In modem petroleum reservoir engineering, the characterization of reservoir heterogeneities is very important to accurately understand and predict reservoir production performance. Formation evaluation for the description of reservoir is generally conducted by performing the analysis of well logging, core testing, and well testing. However, the measured data points by well logging or core testing are in general very sparse and hence reservoir properties should be interpolated and extrapolated from measured points to uncharacterized areas. In assigning the data for the unknown points, simple averaging technique is not feasible as optimum estimation method since this method does not account the spatial relationship between the data points. The main goal of this work is to develop PC-version of multi-purpose geostatistical model in which several stages are systematically proceeded. In the development of model, the simulator employs a automatic selection of semivariogram function such as exponential or spherical model with the best values of $R^2$. The simulator also implements a special algorithm for the fitting of semivariogram function to experimental sernivariogram. The special algorithm such as trial and error scheme is devised since this method is much more reliable and stable than Gauss-Newton method. The simulator has been tested under stringent conditions and found to be stable. Finally, the validity and the applicability of the developed model have been studied against some existing actual field data.

  • This study presents the shape iteration method and the updated Lagrangian methods to calculate the initial tension and the reference length of cables of cable-stayed bridges. The girders and towers of cable-stayed bridge are modelled as 3-dimensional frame elements and the cable as nonlinear truss element or Ernst's cable element. Compared with the initial tensions of cables by finite element method in this study and by trial-and error method in practices, the tensions by the former are shown to be a little less than the those by the latter. The reference lengths of cables by Ernst's cable elements are almost consistent with those of cables by nonlinear truss elements. And the reference length of cables in this study are almost consistent with the arc length of beam with the same initial tension. Therefore the reference lengths of cables in cable-stayed bridges are shown to be obtained simply by the theory of beam with the initial tension calculated in this study.

  • In this study, a distributed rainfall-runoff model, K-DRUM, based on physical kinematic wave was developed to simulate temporal and spatial distribution of flood discharge considering grid rainfall and grid based GIS hydrological parameters. The developed model can simulate temporal and spatial distribution of surface flow and sub-surface flow during flood period, and input parameters of ASCII format as pre-process can be extracted using ArcView. Output results of ASCII format as post-process can be created to express distribution of discharge in the watershed using GIS and express discharge as animation using TecPlot. an auto calibration method for initial soil moisture conditions that have an effect on discharge in the physics based K-DRUM was additionally developed. The baseflow for Namgang Dam Watershed was analysed to review the applicability of the developed auto calibration method. The accuracy of discharge analysis for application of the method was evaluated using RMSE and NRMSE. Problems in running time and inaccuracy setting using the existing trial and error method were solved by applying an auto calibration method in setting initial soil moisture conditions of K-DRUM.
