The purpose of study was to broaden our knowledge on the productivity and cost of thinning operations which has become increasingly practiced in Korea. The thinning operations were conducted in a 40-year old larch (Larix leptolepis) stand, including chainsaw felling and processing at the stump, followed by yarding tree-length logs using a Koller K301-4 tower yarder. The logs were further processed and sorted into 1.8 m and 3.6 m log piles at the landing. We used a standard time study method to evaluate key variables that affect the productivity of thinning operations. The total stump-to-pile operational cost was $41,707won/m^3$. The highest cost activity was the yarding phase which cost $20,083won/m^3$ (48.2% of the total cost), followed by the costs of processing treelength materials into marketable log lengths ($12,143won/m^3$; 29.1%), and then by the costs of sorting/piling the processed logs ($5,039won/m^3$; 12.1%). It was interesting to see that felling and processing trees at the stump had low costs at $1,315won/m^3$ (3.2%) and $3,127won/m^3$ (7.5%), respectively. We used the detailed time study data to develop regression equations which were to predict yarding productivity. Our analysis showed that harvesting system cost was highly sensitive to the number of logs, yarding distance and lateral distance per turn, respectively.

Long-term annual water balances are analyzed for two forest catchments located in Gwangneung covered with forests of different types and ages. The water balance trends of the two catchments from 1982 to 2009 are compared to identify the effect of forest growth and thinning on the water balance in a planted coniferous forest catchment. According to the averaged annual precipitation and runoff for the four designated periods from 1982 to 2009, the water balance of the old natural broad-leaved forest catchment (GB) remained relatively unchanged. In contrast, the young planted coniferous forest catchment (GC) showed significant changes in the water balance due to the forest growing and thinning. The results showed that the catchment runoff decreases with increasing tree age whereas the forest thinning results in an increase in catchment runoff. The mean annual runoff from the catchment GC after thinning increased by 1.7 times, compared with the mean annual runoff before forest thinning. The mean annual runoff from the catchment GB was very stable throughout the period. However, such an effect of forest thinning appeared to last only for about 10 year-period, after which the water yield increment in the catchment GC disappeared. It indicates that the proper forest management should be reconsidered at the interval of 10 years to effectively reduce water loss and increase water yield in the planted coniferous forest.

In this paper, a new method of character recognition is proposed. It uses density information, in addition to positional and directional information generally used, to recognize a character. Four directional feature primitives are extracted from the thinning templates on the observation that the output of the templates have directional property in general. A simple and fast feature extraction scheme is possible. Features are organized from recursive nonary tree(N-tree) that corresponds to normalized character area. Each node of the N-tree has four directional features that are sum of the features of it's nine sub-nodes. Every feature primitive from the templates are added to the corresponding leaf and then summed to the upper nodes successively. Recognition can be accomplished by using appropriate feature level of N-tree. Also, effectiveness of each node's feature vector was tested by experiment. A method to implement the proposed feature vector organization algorithm into hardware is proposed as well. The third generation node, which is 4$\times$4, is used as a unit processing element to extract features, and it was implemented in hardware. As a result, we could observe that it is possible to extract feature vector for real-time processing.
This study was conducted to investigate the changes in soil temperature, soil moisture content, light availability (photosynthetically active radiation, PAR) and diameter growth in 46-year-old Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold et Zuccarini) plantation located in Gwangneung experimental forest after 4 years from thinning. Three different thinning intensities [control, 45%(T45), and 60%(T60) basal area reduction] were applied in 2004. Mean soil temperature and soil water content were $8.9^{\circ}C$ and 14.3% for control, $10^{\circ}C$ and 16.1% for T45 and $10.2^{\circ}C$ and 16.1% for T60, respectively. Mean soil temperature and moisture content were significantly different among the treatment plots (p<0.05). Mean PAR in control, T45 and T60 was 44, 143 and178 ${\mu}mol/m^2$/sec, respectively and the differences were also statistically significant among the treatment plots (p<0.05). Mean annual diameter growth in control, T45 and T60 was 0.4, 1.5 and 1.2 mm, respectively. Diameter growth of Pinus koraiensis was steadily increased after thinning in comparison to control. Consequently, the results suggested that soil temperature, soil moisture content and light availability were likely to last beyond the 4 years after thinning in this Korean pine plantation.
Recently, shows the possibility of providing such dyed-gathered woods after forming single boar This studyds with using cheap timbers generated by the thinning. It is helpful for master artisans are suffering from finding qualified materials. Traditionally, the master artisan has been used the beautiful grained wood from around roots of old zelkova trees and black persimmon trees. Instead, this study shows that dyed-gathered woods replace the natural grained wood and also produces a furniture made of an aggregate and a plate from walnut trees and ash trees which are a contrast to dyed-gathered woods. Dyed-gathered woods can reproduce the various colors to satisfy people's tastes, and the dignified grains that we can see in the old woods. Besides, dyed-gathered woods can replace rare materials and provide higher reliability of supplies.
This study was conducted to clarify the relationship between bird community and forest structure from early May to mid June, 1988 in two sites which had different forest structures due to silvicultural practice, located in the Tomakomai Experimental Forest of Hokkaido University, Hokkaido, Japan. Quantitative ahbitat analysis was applied to elucidate difference between the two study sites, and territory mapping method and guild analysis were used for assessment of the bird community. Dominant tree species were Quercus mongolica, Magnolia obovata, Prunus sargentii, Acer mono and Tilia japonica. Unithinned site had more foliage coverage in upper and middle layers, but in lower layer had less coverage than thinned site. Thirty four species of birds were recorded and of them only 21 species occupied territories within the study area. Dominant species were Ficedula narcissina, Phylloscopus occipitalis, Parus major, Passer rutilans, Sitta europaea and Parus palustris in the study area. The unmber of breeding species of the two sites were equal, but the species composition of breeding bird communities was different between the sites. The number of species and pairs on hole-nesting guild were greater in the unthinned site, but those on ground-nesting guild were greater in the thinned site. Canopy-nesting guild showed no significant difference between the two sites. Silvicultural practice such as proper thinning appeared to be not inadequate to all of the forest birds, probably good to bush and ground nesting guild, and to tree & bush and ground foraging guild. The silvicultural practice also did not considerably affect the hole and canopy-nesting guild.

This study was conducted to evaluate the felling productivity by chain saw in thinning operation of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) stands. Time study data were collected from 4 thinning site in Korean pine stands. This study derived a regression model to estimate the average felling cycle time for evaluating the productivity in felling, which was used to analyze the felling productivity by thinning period. In the study sites, the average felling cycle time per a tree was 463 sec/cycle and the productivity was $2.26m^3/hr$. Thinning period in Korean pine is divided into three groups by producing purposes; small-diameter log, medium-diameter log, and large-diameter log. And analyzed working time and productivity from thinning period fixed by producing purposes. For the small-diameter log producing purpose estimated to be thinning period operated once when the mean DBH was 16 cm and its productivity was $8.94m^3/man{\cdot}day$. For the medium-diameter and large-diameter log producing purposes, thinning period was twice and three times when the mean DBH of the 1st and 2nd thinning period was 16 cm and 21 cm, and its productivity was $9.06m^3/man{\cdot}day$ and $10.86m^3/man{\cdot}day$. The 30 cm in DBH and $15.12m^3/man{\cdot}day$ in productivity was operated 3rd thinning for the large-diameter log producing purposes.

Forest stand yield and its changes along with 10 thinning scenarios were estimated using a forest stand yield model for six major tree species in Korea, such as Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province, Pinus densiflora in other regions, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, Quercus acutissima Carruth, Quercus mongolica. The 10 thinning scenarios were generated based on a number of constraints and assumptions. For instance, it was assumed that thinning is implemented between 15 years and 40 years with 5 year period and its duration should be at least 10 years. Also, the overall removal rate from the thinning treatments was assumed to be not greater than 60%. Under the 10 scenarios, the overall stand yield volumes from thinning and final harvesting were estimated for each species and site index. The results showed that highest yield volumes were obtained for Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province, Pinus koraiensis and Quercus mongolica when 30% of basal areas were thinned at 20 and 40 years, while highest yield volumes were obtained for Pinus densiflora in other regions and Larix leptolepis when 20% of basal areas were thinned at 20, 30 and 40 years. Those two scenarios gave the same amount of highest yield volume for Quercus acutissima Carruth. Also the results indicated that thinning treatment is effective to increase overall stand yield volume and its effects are larger with a higher site index. The largest thinning effects were found in Pinus densiflora in Gangwon province (28%) and Larix leptolepis (25%), while limited in Pinus koraiensis (12%). The forest stand yield model, used in this research, could be an effective tool for estimating the stand dynamics with various thinning treatments, but it could be improved in a further research that validates its applicability in the field.
To investigate the effect of thinning intensity on environmental factors and ectomycorrhizal mushroom fruiting in forest ecosystems, we studied canopy closure, throughfall, soil temperature, soil moisture, light response of understory vegetation, and ectomycorrhizal mushroom fruiting in a 10-year-old pine forest after 34%, 45%, and 60% thinning. Canopy closure was significantly higher in the 34% treatment and control plots, ranging from 80-85% in April. However, in November, all thinning treatment plots showed a decrease of approximately 5-10% compared with the control plot. The 60% treatment plot had over 200 mm of additional throughfall compared with the control plot, and monthly throughfall was significantly higher by more than 100 mm in October. The soil temperature in each treatment plot increased significantly by up to 1℃ or more compared with the control plot as the thinning rate increased. The soil moisture increased by more than 5% in the thinning treatment plots during rainfall, particularly in the 34% treatment plot, where the rate of moisture decrease was slower. The photosynthetic rate of major tree species (excluding Pinus densiflora)was highest in Quercus mongolica, with a rate of 7 µmolCO2·m-2·s-1. At a lightintensity of 800 μmol·m-2·s-1, Q. mongolica showed the highest photosynthetic level of 6 ± 0.3 μmolCO2·m-2·s-1 in the 45% treatment. The photosynthetic rate of Fraxinus sieboldiana and Styrax japonicus increased as the thinning intensity increased. The Shannon-Wiener index of mycorrhizal mushrooms did not significantly differ among treatments, but the fresh weight of mushrooms was approximately 360-840 g higher in the 34% and 45% treatments than in the control. Additionally, the fresh weight of fungi in the 60% treatment was 860 g less than that in the control. There were more individuals of Amanita citrina in the control than in the thinning treatment, while Suillus bovinus numbers increased by more than 10 times in the 34% thinning treatment compared with the control.
This research examined the technical feasibility of composite that had two layers of fiberglass reinforcement to enhance the load carrying capacity of lumber. Specimens were prepared from standard lumber made of thinning crop trees such as Larix kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, and P. rigida. Results indicated that bending properties, hardness, and wood screw withdrawal load of low density lumber from the P. koraiensis increased as the number of layers of fiberglass reinforcement increased. Composite produced by VARTM method showed the MOE increased in all specimens, while the MOR differed on the location, whether the 2-layers of FRP is put on tensile zone or compressive zone. The MOR of high density lumber from Larix kaempferi and P. rigida decreased when they placed into tensile zone, but low density lumber from P. koraiensis increased in same location. The bending toughness only increased high density lumber of Larix kaempferi as the number of layers of fiberglass reinforcement increased. The technique developed by this study may increase an opportunity to use small diameter log with low density for commercial purposes.
