  • In this paper, we propose the bootstrap and aggregating (bagging) vector quantization (VQ) classifier to improve the performance of the text-independent speaker recognition system. This method generates multiple training data sets by resampling the original training data set, constructs the corresponding VQ classifiers, and then integrates the multiple VQ classifiers into a single classifier by voting. The bagging method has been proven to greatly improve the performance of unstable classifiers. Through two different experiments, this paper shows that the VQ classifier is unstable. In one of these experiments, the bias and variance of a VQ classifier are computed with a waveform database. The variance of the VQ classifier is compared with that of the classification and regression tree (CART) classifier[1]. The variance of the VQ classifier is shown to be as large as that of the CART classifier. The other experiment involves speaker recognition. The speaker recognition rates vary significantly by the minor changes in the training data set. The speaker recognition experiments involving a closed set, text-independent and speaker identification are performed with the TIMIT database to compare the performance of the bagging VQ classifier with that of the conventional VQ classifier. The bagging VQ classifier yields improved performance over the conventional VQ classifier. It also outperforms the conventional VQ classifier in small training data set problems.

  • In this paper, an object recognition method based on the depth information from the RGB-D camera, Xtion, is proposed for an indoor mobile robot. First, the RANdom SAmple Consensus (RANSAC) algorithm is applied to the point cloud obtained from the RGB-D camera to detect and remove the floor points. Next, the removed point cloud is classified by the k-means clustering method as each object's point cloud, and the normal vector of each point is obtained by using the k-d tree search. The obtained normal vectors are classified by the trained multi-layer perceptron as 18 classes and used as features for object recognition. To distinguish an object from another object, the similarity between them is measured by using Levenshtein distance. To verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed object recognition method, the experiments are carried out with several similar boxes.

  • In this paper, we implement an identification system using the vein image of the hand. The vein pattern is obtained in the grey-scale 2D image through the infrared-red imaging from back of the hand. Since the frame has lack of clearance, we use some enhancing methods such as the complement, addition, and multiplication to the image to increase the contrast. After Wiener filtering for smoothness of the vein pattern, we transform the image into the binary image with mean function. The binarized image is session thinned and the cross-points in the vein tree are obtained by calculating the number of pixels connected because the image is shaped as a tree. We choose the point and find the nearest to the center if it has majority, where we find the two end points of the selected line. We can get the angle between the two lines joined at the cross-point and store its coordinates, angle, and label the values. The values are used as the feature vector of the vein pattern. This procedure is similar to the human cognition sequences. It is shown that the proposed method is simple for the vein recognition.

  • Interpattern association (IPA) model which the interconnection weight matrix(IWM) is constructed by the association between patterns is effective in similar pattern recognitions. But, if the number of reference patterns is increased, the ability of recognition is decreased. Using a hierarchical recognition algorithm which adopts the tree search strategy, we classified reference patterns into sub-groups by similarity. In IPA model, if input includes random noise we make it converge to reference pattern by means of input includes random noise we make it converge to reference pattern by means of increasing the number of pixels of prohibited state in IWM. In relation to reference patterns the pixel of prohibited state made partially prohibited state of no connected state using which is not included common and feature regions by each reference patterns.

  • This paper describes an a, pp.oach to recognizing composite features of prismatic parts. AAG (Attribute Adjacency Graph) is adopted as the basis of describing basic feature, but it is extended to enhance the expressive power of AAG by adding face type, angles between faces and normal vectors. Our a, pp.oach is called Extended AAG (EAAG). To simplify the recognition procedure, feature classification tree is built using the graph types of EEA and the number of EAD's. Algorithms to find open faces and dimensions of features are exemplified and used in decomposing composite feature. The processing sequence of recognized features is automatically determined during the decomposition process of composite features.

  • Desertification has been expanding with a remarkable speed across the Northeast Asia. Desertification in Northeast Asia significantly influences Korea's economy and environmental health conditions in recent years. For these reasons, a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Korea have carried out the reforestation projects to combat desertification in China and Mongolia. Several tree plantation projects were implemented in Mongolia and China. The objective of this study was to analyze and evaluate the performance of tree plantation aid projects carried out by Korean NGOs in Mongolia. The performance of tree plantation projects was examined through effectiveness, efficiency, equity and responsiveness of those projects. The performance was analyzed with the survival rate of planted trees and planting cost, the recognitions of Mongolian people. The analysis of the performance showed that the tree plantation cooperation projects carried out by Korean NGOs in Mongolia had comparatively high performance from a larger point of view. Especially, effectiveness and responsiveness of their projects were highly marked in spite of all the difficulties of carrying out the tree plantation. Such a high effectiveness represented the relatively higher survival rates of trees and Mongolian's positive recognition of plantation projects. Furthermore, the responsiveness also turned out to be high with a great satisfaction of the Mongolian people for plantation projects conducted by the Korean NGOs. Survey results indicated that the efficiency and equity of the projects would be increased by promoting the cooperation projects for tree planting throughout Mongolia with reinforcing infrastructures. By comparison between Korean NGOs and Mongolian Government plantation projects, confirmed the importance of sustained financial support and maintenance activities in the plantation sites.

  • This paper presents three different search engines for the detection of CAD-parts in large databases. The analysis of the contained information is performed by the export of the data that is stored in the structure trees of the CAD-models. A preparation program generates one XML-file for every model, which in addition to including the data of the structure tree, also owns certain physical properties of each part. The first search engine is specializes in the discovery of standard parts, like screws or washers. The second program uses certain user input as search parameters, and therefore has the ability to perform personalized queries. The third one compares one given reference part with all parts in the database, and locates files that are identical, or similar to, the reference part. All approaches run automatically, and have the analysis of the structure tree in common. Files constructed with CATIA V5, and search engines written with Python have been used for the implementation. The paper also includes a short comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of each program, as well as a performance test.

  • In Human Reliability Analysis(HRA), the uncertainties involved in many factors that affect human reliability have to be represented as the quantitative forms. Conventional probability- based human reliability theory is used to evaluate the effect of those uncertainties but it is pointed out that the actual human reliability should be different from that of conventional one. Conventional HRA makes use of error rates, however, it is difficult to collect data enough to estimate these error rates, and the estimates of error rates are dependent only on engineering judgement. In this paper, the error possibility that is proposed by Onisawa is used to represent human reliability, and the error possibility is obtained by use of fuzzy reasoning that plays an important role to clarify the relation between human reliability and human error. Also, assuming these factors are connected to the top event through Fault Tree structure, the influence and correlation of these factors are measured by fuzzy operation. When a fuzzy operation is applied to Fault Tree Analysis, it is possible to simplify the operation applying the logic disjuction and logic conjuction to structure function, and the structure of human reliability can be represented as membership function of the top event. Also, on the basis of the the membership function, the characteristics of human reliability can be evaluated by use of the concept of pattern recognition.
