The goal of this study was to find the way of reduction on food wastes in the university cafeteria. Four hundred and two students from three universities in Daejeon city were surveyed. The data were analyzed by SAS program. The results were summarized as followings: 24.95% of the total users use the university cafeteria everyday. Reasons for the utilization were listed as time saving 31.40%, near place 26.73%, low price 23.16% and no other place to eat 17.82%. Recommendations for the improvements of university cafeteria were listed as menu variation 38.26%, taste 37.83%, price decrease 10.43%. Female students left more food wastes than male students and most leaving food was side dish than Bab, Guk and Kimchi. The major reason of leaving foods was shown to be influenced by the taste and amount of foods supplied in university cafeteria. And they preferred kimchibock-kumbab to other kinds of bab. But they disliked Flounderjolim, pickled anchovies, Ggonchigui, Ginger, Burdock, Lotus root and Crown daisy. The perception of users on the reduction of food waste was 84.10% of total students. The students who know on the method of food wastes treatment were 58.26%. Improvement for reduction of food wastes of university cafeteria can be summarized to emphasize on taste, menu variation, adequate of serving size, also that should be conduct studies for systematic administration method and standard education for reduction of food waste.
The objectives of this research were to 1) isolate and identify thermophilic bacteria for food waste treatment; 2) investigate the capability of food waste treatment using Bacillus species; and 3) develop air-dried Bacillus starters for food waste treatment. Five Bacillus species were isolated from food wastes and identified as Bacillus licheniformis (B. licheniformis) G1, Bacillus circulans C2, Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) E1, Bacillus vanillea F1, and Bacillus atrophaeus G2 based on 16S rDNA sequencing. Each identified Bacillus and the mixture of Bacillus species were cultivated in the standard food waste at $45^{\circ}C$ for 8 d. Changes in cell count, solid contents, and pH of the food waste were monitored during cultivation. Air-dried Bacillus cell powders were prepared using wheat flour and lactomil as excipients, and the cell count and survival rate were determined. The cell count of B. licheniformis G1 exhibited the highest number among the tested Bacillus (${\sim}10^8CFU/mL$). The greatest reduction in solid contents of food waste was achieved by B. subtilis E1 (22.6%). The mixture of B. licheniformis G1 and B. subtilis E1 exhibited a synergistic effect on the reduction of solid contents. Lactomil was determined as better excipient than wheat flour based on the greatest survival rate of 95%.
Livestock manure treatments have become a more serious problem because massive environmental pollutions such as green and red tides caused by non-point pollution sources from livestock manures have emerged as a serious social issue. In addition, more food wastes are being produced due to population growth and increased income level. Since the London Convention has banned the ocean dumping of wastes, some other waste treatment methods for land disposal had to be developed and applied. At the same time, researches have been conducted to develop alternative energy sources from various types of wastes. As a result, anaerobic digestion as a waste treatment method has become an attractive solution. In this study has three objectives: first, to identify the physical properties of the mixture of livestock wastewater and food waste when combining food waste treatment with the conventional livestock manure treatment based on anaerobic mesophilic digestion; second, to find the ideal ratio of waste mixture that could maximize the collection efficiency of methane ($CH_4$) from the anaerobic digestion process; and third, to promote $CH_4$ production by comparing the biodegradability. As a result of comparing the reactors R1, R2, and R3, each containing a mixture of food waste and livestock manure at the ratio of 5:5, 7:3, and 3:7, respectively, R2 showed the optimum treatment efficiencies for the removal of Total Solids (TS) and Volatile Solids (VS), $CH_4$ production, and biodegradability.

This study performed to extract operation factors of major organic wastes, which were food wastes and waste activated sludge generated in industries in order to use them as a substrate for bio-H2 production. According to the results of experimental analysis for hydrogen production capacity by various organic concentrations, the hydrogen production yield was the highest at 80 g/L, and the efficiency was improved by the pretreatment of waste activated sludge (acid treatment, alkali treatment). Hydrogen production efficiency was improved by mixing food wastes and waste activated sludge if waste activated sludge was below than 30%, however, it was decreased when it was more than 50%. The impacts of heavy metals on the hydrogen production shows that the inhibition level depends on the concentration of Cr, Zn, and Cu, Fe was able to enhance the hydrogen production.
This stusy was designed to develop nutrition education program for the primary school children served by the national school lunch program and to evaluate ist educational effects. Subjects consisted of 61 elementary school children(30 in the control group and 31 in the treatment group) in the 5th grade. Only the treatment group participated in a twelve-week nutrition education program. To evaluate the effects of the nutrition education program, the control and treatment groups were given a pretest and posttest for nutrition knowledge, food attitude, food habits, food preference and plate wastes before and after nutrition education. The results obtained are summerized as follows ; the nutrition knowledge test score (30.4) of the treatment group was significantly higher than that (17.4) of the control group after nutrition education . However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in food attitude test scores after nutrition education. We also did not find any difference induced by nutrition education or the food preferences of the treatment group. After nutrition education , the amount of plate waste of some menus were significantly decreased in the treatment group, but the amount of plate waste of the control group was not significantly changed. However, there was no significant difference in the post test scores above food habits between two groups. It was concluded that a twelve-week nutrition education program can improve nutrition knowledge and decrease plate waste but is not enough to change food attitude , food preference and food habits. It can besard that the two components of foodservice are nutritional foodservice and nutrition education. Foodservice management alone without nutrition education is hardly enough to improve the nutritional status of school children. The result of this study indicate that applying the nutrition education program to elementary school children who are served by the national lunch program can maximize the effects of the national school lunch program.
Treatment of food waste is becoming a big issue due to their significant quantities. Composting could be an effective alternative for food waste management which could be used as soil conditioner or fertilizer with little concerns about heavy metals and pathogens. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of food waste on Chinese cabbage growth and soil properties. 9 different treatments (two livestock manures, two food wastes, two livestock manures + chemical fertilizer, two food wastes + chemical fertilizer, and control) were applied to Chinese cabbage. All treatments were carried out in 3 replicates. We measured leaf length, leaf width, fresh weight, dry weight, and leaf greenness of Chinese cabbage. Treatment of one of food waste composts significantly increased leaf length and leaf width of Chinese cabbage by 28.6, 26.6, 67.7, and 59.9%, respectively, in comparison to those of control, while no significant differences for leaf greenness were shown. Application of food waste compost resulted in significant increase of EC, available $P_2O_5$, CEC, organic matter, and exchangeable cations. However, further researches are needed to reduce NaCl content of food waste.
Modern society has been experiencing by population growth and urbanization that bring, a change of eating habits which has occurred a various types of waste in a large amount. Even though these wastes are required an immediate treatment with difficulties unsanitary handling and existing waste treatment method are by incineration, fermentation, drying and etc. however a bad smell occurs after the treatment that need's a lot of energy in processing organic wastes with high moisture contents and wasteful and inefficient problem. The strength assessment of the organic waste agitating vessel is required in terms of safety due to the differences of loading on the shaft that was treated by agitating the mixture of food waste. The damage of agitating axis is depended on steam pressure, temperature condition and the force moment that exerted by the food waste. Thus the strength assessment and stability evaluation are very important, especially to handle a hard waste. In this study the rotation capacity of agitation is about 5 tons considering general structural rolled steel pressure vessel strength and steam pressure. The purpose is to estimate the safety and strength evaluation for a agitator axis and impellers according to the rotating angle of the axis under the condition of the 3.2 ton capacity reactor.

Purpose: The treatment of thyroid cancer patients was continuously increased. According to the increment of thyroid cancer patients, the establishment of iodine therapy site was also increased in each hospital. This treatment involves the administration of radioactive iodine, which will be given in the form of a capsule. Therefore, protections and managements for radioactive source pollution and radiation exposure should be necessary for radiation safety. Among the many problems, the problem of disposing the radioactive wastes was occurred. In this study, The date for self-disposal for radioactive wastes, which were contaminated in clothes, bedclothes and trash, were calculated. Materials and Methods: The number of iodine therapy ward was 15 in Korea Institute of Radiological Medical and Sciences. Recently, 8 therapy wards were operated for iodine therapy patients and others were on standby for emergency treatment ward of any radiation accidents. Radioactive wastes, which were occurred in therapy ward, were clothes, bedclothes, bath cover for patients washing water and food and drink which was leftover by patients. Each sample was hold into the marinelli beaker (clothes, bedclothes, bath covers) and 90 ml beaker (food, drink, and washing water). The activities of collected samples were measured by HpGe MCA device (Multi Channel Analysis, CANBERRA, USA) Results: The storage period for the each kind of radioactive wastes was calculated by equation of storage periods based on the measurement outcomes. The average storage period was 60 days for the case of clothes, and the maximum storage period was 93 days for patient bottoms. The average storage period and the maximum storage period for the trash were 69 days and 97 days, respectively. The leftover foods and drinks had short storage period (the average storage period was 25 days and maximum storage period was 39 days), compared with other wastes. Conclusion: The proper storage period for disposing the radioactive waste (clothes, bedclothes and bath cover) was 100 days by the regulation on self-disposal of radioactive waste. In addition, the storage period for disposing the liquid radioactive waste was 120 days. The current regulation for radioactive waste self-disposing was not suitable for the circumstances of each radioactive therapy facility. Therefore, it was necessary to reduce the leftover food and drinks by adequate table setting for patients, and improve the process and regulation for disposing the short-half life radioactive wastes.

Disposal possibility of raw food wastes which have various characters without any washing and composting process was tested directly using the earthworm, Eisenia andrei. The amount of feeding treatment a day by the earthworm was investigated according to input amount of 1.5 kg/m$^2$ or 3.0 kg/m$^2$ of fifteen food wastes with the different pH and EC. Earthworm disposed an average of 0.87 kg/m$^2$/day of food wastes at the constant temperature of 15$^{\circ}C$ and 1.01 kg/m$^2$/day at 2$0^{\circ}C$. The most disposal among fifteen food wastes was the food waste with pH 5.3 and EC 17.7 as 1.59 kg/m$^2$/day at 15$^{\circ}C$ and as 1.63 kg/m$^2$/day at 2$0^{\circ}C$. The least disposal was the food waste with pH 3.9 and EC 17.7 as 0.31 kg/m$^2$/day at 15$^{\circ}C$ and as 0.53 kg/m$^2$/day at 2$0^{\circ}C$. It took an average 4 days to dispose the amount of 3 kg raw food wastes at 15$^{\circ}C$ and 3.3 days at 2$0^{\circ}C$.
The goal of this study was to fine the way of reduction on food waste in the university cafeteria. A survey was conducted on the 500 faculty members using Yeungnam University cafeteria , and if illustrate the faculty's use and perception for the reduction of food waste. Its results can be summarized as follows ; 32.0 % of the total users use the university cafeteria everyday, also 56.6% of the users preferred Korean style dish. Female users left more food than the male users resulting in more food wastes. The male users resulting in more food waste and the most leaving food was Kimchi than the other types of foods. The most favorite stew and side dish turned out to be Yukgaejang and Bulgogi respectively, also Kimchibokkumbab was the preffered dish. But they disliked Sunjiguk , Ginger, Jellyfish and Mackerel pike. The preception of male users on the reduction of food waste was lower than that of female users. The best way of food waste treatment recognized by the users were utilizing the waste food as fodder for animals or fertilizer.
