In reinforced concrete structure, it is very important to secure ductile performance of column because the columns become brittle failure and cause the collapse of an entire structure and the damage of human life. This study is intending to seek the quantity of transverse steels in square reinforced concrete columns which is derived from moment-curvature analysis of cross section about various arrangements of transverse steel and the ratio of axial force and to propose the design method to secure the sufficient ductile behavior subjected to complex loading.
An analytical solution procedure for the dynamic response of beams with variable properties is developed by using an asymptotic solution and the Green's function. This asymptotic closed form solution is derived for the transverse vibration of beams under the assumption of slowly varying properties, such as mass, cross-section, tension etc., along the beam length. However, this solution is still found to be very accurate even in the case of large variation, such as step change in cross-section, mass, and tension. Therefore, this derived asymptotic closed form solution and the Green's function can be easily applied to find dynamic responses for various kind of beam vibration problems.

In this paper, the behaviour of axially loaded partially encased composite columns made with light welded H steel shapes is examined using ABAQUS finite element modelling. The results of the numerical simulations are compared to the response observed in previous experimental studies on that column system. The steel shape of the specimens has transverse links attached to the flanges to improve its local buckling capacity and concrete is poured between the flanges only. The test specimens included 14 stubcolumns with a square cross section ranging from 300 mm to 600 mm in depth. The transverse link spacing varied from 0.5 to 1 times the depth and the width-to-thickness ratio of the flanges ranged from 23 to 35. The numerical model accounted for nonlinear stress-strain behaviour of materials, residual stresses in the steel shape, initial local imperfections of the flanges, and allowed for large rotations in the solution. A Riks displacement controlled strategy was used to carry out the analysis. Plastic analyses on the composite models reproduced accurately the capacity of the specimens, the failure mode, the axial strain at peak load, the transverse stresses in the web, and the axial stresses in the transverse links. The influence of applying a typical construction loading sequence could also be reproduced numerically. A design equation is proposed to determine the axial capacity of this type of column.
This paper is an experimental study on the behavior of vertical shear link in normal (steel section with and without stiffener) and composite (steel section with concrete located at the area limited to web and flanges of the section) configurations. This study is mainly aimed to perceive failure mechanism, collect laboratory data, and consider the effect of number of transverse reinforcements on strength and ductility of composite vertical links. There have been four specimens selected for examining the effects of different details. The first specimen was an I section with no stiffener, the second composed of I section with stiffeners provided according to AISC 2005. The third and fourth specimens were composed of I sections with reinforced concrete located at the area between its flanges and web. The tests carried out were of quasi-static type and conducted on full scale specimens. Experimental findings show remarkable increase in shear capacity and ductility of the composite links as compared to the normal specimens.

In seismic design, hollow section concrete columns offer advantages by reducing the weight and seismic mass compared to concrete section RC bridge columns. However, the flexure-shear behavior and spirals strain of hollow section concrete columns are not well-understood. Octagonal RC bridge columns of a small-scale model were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. The volumetric ratio of the transverse spiral hoop of all specimens is 0.00206. The test results showed that the structural performance of the hollow specimen, such as the initial crack pattern, initial stiffness, and diagonal crack pattern, was comparable to that of the solid specimen. However, the lateral strength and ultimate displacement of the hollow specimen noticeably decreased after the drift ratio of 3%. The columns showed flexure-shear failure at the final stage. Analytical and experimental investigations are presented in this study to understand a correlation confinement steel ratio with neutral axis and a correlation between the strain of spirals and the shear resistance capacity of steel in hollow and solid section concrete columns. Furthermore, shear strength components (Vc, Vs·, Vp) and concrete stress were investigated.

The present study evaluated the effective arrangement approach of transverse reinforcement in the jacket section for seismic strengthening of reinforced concrete columns. To simulate the full-scale columns, the section dimensions were determined as $450{\times}450mm$ for non-seismic existing columns and $750{\times}750mm$ for section enlargement strengthening columns. Over-lapped channel-shape bars and prefabricated bar units were proposed for closed-hoops in the jacket section, and conventional cross-ties anchored into existing columns and V-ties were considered for the supplementary ties. Test results showed that the axial capacity of the existing column and section enlargement columns with over-lapped channel-shape hoops was similar to the nominal strength calculated using ACI 318-14 procedure whereas the section enlargement column with prefabricated bar units possessed 1.25 times higher axial capacity than the nominal prediction. Furthermore, the axial ductility ratio of the section enlargement column with prefabricated bar unit was 139% higher than that of the existing column despite the potential size effect on ductility of concrete. Thus, it can be concluded that the developed prefabricated bar unit technique is practically useful for preventing the premature buckling of longitudinal reinforcement and confining core concrete in the section enlargement strengthening columns.
This study suggests a suitable random transverse tining for reduction tire/road noise from concrete pavement. Through literature reviews, random transverse tining that can disperse the energy concentrated to the specific frequency was suggested using the LCG(linear congruential generators) algorithm. The spacing of tining from this study is applied to Daegu-Pohang express highway. For the purpose oi comparison, two other random tining sections were included that are research products from Chung-Ang university and Wisconsin DOT. In result of pass-by noise measurement by car, though designed section is superior to the others as noise reduction by reducing pitch noise, the effectiveness is not large. In case of traffic noise measurement, lower noise was observed at random transverse tining sections than uniformly transverse tining section, too. But there are seine differences between pass-by noise and traffic noise.

The experimental study for oblong section was carried out by the column test in weak axis. The column specimens had 3 types of transverse steel configurations, such as interlocking spirals, interlocking circular hoop ties and rectangular ties. The oblong columns with interlocking spirals and with interlocking circular hoop ties showed better seismic performance than the rectangular columns with rectangular hoops and cross-ties. The objectives of this study were to provide experimental data on the behavior of interlocking spiral columns under cyclic loading, to compare the performance of columns with interlocking spirals to columns with various transverse steel configurations, to study the flexural detailing of interlocking spirals, interlocking circular hoops, and other transverse steel configurations as the transverse reinforcement, and to make recommendations for the design of bridge columns incorporating interlocking spirals, circular hoops as the transverse reinforcement.
PURPOSES : Since expressways in South Korea are toll roads, many trumpet type interchanges exist, resulting in the installation of loop ramps very frequently. While the travel speed of the main lane is designed to be 100-110 km/h, the structure of a loop ramp is different and is designed for a minimum speed of 40 km/h. In fact, most of the actual travel speeds measured on the ramp exceed the designated speed, which has been a major problem in traffic safety. In this research, a type of pavement marking speed-reduction treatment called the "Peripheral Transverse Line" is installed on expressway loop ramps in order to study the change of driving speeds after the installation. METHODS : To verify statistically the change, this speed-reduction treatment has been installed on the Chungju interchange and the Yeoju junction. The driving speeds before the installation were compared with driving speeds both one month and five monthsafter the installation. RESULTS : As a result, the reductions of the average driving speeds after the treatment were statistically significant. More specifically, the average driving speeds of the Chungju interchange were reduced by 7.1-7.7 % for its tangent road section, and the speeds decreased by 8.5-9.5 % for its curve section. Similarly, in the Yeoju junction, an average speed reduction of 2.9-4.8 % for its tangent section was measured, along with 3.9% long-term speed reduction for its curve section. CONCLUSIONS : Since the pavement marking speed-reduction treatment has been partially proven to be effective from this research, we expect to expand this treatment and re-confirm the effect from a long-term perspective in the future.

Transverse steel bars are used in the plastic hinge zone of columns to insure adequate confinement, prevention of longitudinal bar buckling and ductile behavior. Fabrication and placement of rectangular hoops and cross-ties in columns are difficult to construct and require larger amount of transverse steels. In this paper, to solve these problems, the new lateral confinement method using oblong hoop is proposed for the transverse confinement of columns of the oblong cross-section and flared column. The experimental study for octagonal oblong cross-section was carried out by the flared columns test in strong axis. The lateral confinement method using proposed oblong hoop detail showed satisfactory performance of lateral confinement. Therefore it can be the alternative for oblong cross-section and flared column with improved workability and cost-efficiency.
