  • The properties of discharge, luminance, and spectroscopy are investigated in a longitudinal and transverse discharge fluorescent lamps with tube of outer diameter 4 mm. The sample lamps are prepared to be three kinds of gas composition such as mercury lamps of Ne(95%)+Ar(5%)+Hg(2 mg), the mercury-free lamps of Xe 100% and Ne+Xe(4%). The gas pressure is in the range of $5{\sim}300\;Torr$. In the mercury lamps, the longitudinal discharge having a positive column is high in luminance and efficiency, while the transverse discharge is no luminance at all. In the Xe-lamps, the transverse discharge shows relatively good in efficiency as compared with the longitudinal discharge which has a high discharge voltage and a low luminance and efficiency. In the transverse discharge of relatively high efficiency, a pure Xe(100%) gas discharge has a higher efficiency than the mixture gas of Ne+Xe(4%). Through these experiments, the properties of mercury and xenon lamps are verified. In the mercury lamps, the longitudinal discharge of tubular fluorescent lamps is high in luminance and efficiency, while the transverse discharge of flat panel fluorescent lamps are low in luminance efficiency. In the mercury-free lamps, the flat fluorescent lamps of transverse discharge having a high pressure ${\sim}100\;Torr$ with the pure Xe-gas are verified to be suggestable.

  • The type, the length, and the install space of the grate inlets in main street were designed with the consideration of discharge calculated with street surface rainfall. However, the discharge that was not intercepted at transverse grate inlets in steep local roads increases inundation areas around main street Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the flow characteristics and interception capacity at transverse grate inlets in steep local roads. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can be changed the longitudinal slopes($2{\sim}10%$) of street, the size ($20{\sim}50cm$) and the types(TYPE I, II) of grate inlet was installed for this study. The range of the experimental discharges were from $2{\ell}/sec$ to $24{\ell}/sec$. The interception discharges of transverse grate inlets per unit width changing the longitudinal slope of steep local road were calculated by the hydraulic experimental results. The design method of transverse grate inlets was developed by the interception discharges per unit width. This design method was applied to decide the space and size of transverse grate inlets.

  • ABSTRACT -- Recently, a method of magnetically-enhanced discharge columns is considered to increase the luminous efficacy of discharge lamps, which is based upon the face that the diffusion motion of charged particles in the discharge column strongly depends on the applied magnetic fields. This study investigates the effect of applied transverse magnetic fields on the light output of low-pressure Hg-Ar discharge. As a result, it is found that the electric field in the positive column increases according to the applied megnetic field, which causes an increase in the total light output. And this effect is much more pronounced upon the spectral line originating form the higher levels.

  • In this paper, an attempt is made to derive the variation equatios of the discharge current and the luminous flux for flourescent lamp subjected to a transverse magnetic field. As the field increases, so do the electric field, the electron temperature, and the luminous flux, while the current decreases. The theory is in a reasonable agreement with the experimental results, taking account of many approximations and restrictions.

  • A mathematical model is presented for predicting the steady state two-demensional distribution of solute concentration in the meandering nonuniform natural channel. The dispersion equation derived herein employs the transverse cumulative discharge as an independent variable replacing the transverse distance and that it is developed in an orthogonal curvilinear coordinnate system which follows the flow direction of natural channel. The prediction from the results of numerical model are compared with laboratory experiment data. It is found that results from simulation and experiments are in good agreement.

  • Fixed Electromagnetic Wave Surface Velocimetry (Fixed EWSV) has been started to be used to measure flood discharge in the mountain stream, since it has various advantages such that it works well to continuously measure stream discharge even in the night time as well as very strong weather. On the contrary, the Fixed EWSV only measures single point surface velocity, thus it does not consider varying feature of the transverse velocity profile in the given stream cross-section. In addition, a conventional value of 0.85 was generally used as the ratio for converting the measured surface velocity into the depth-averaged velocity. These aspects could bring in error for accurately measuring the stream discharge. The capacity of the EWSV for capturing rapid flow velocity was also not properly validated. This study aims at conducting error analysis of using the EWSV by: 1) measuring transverse velocity at multiple points along the cross-section to assess an error driven by the single point measurement; 2) figuring out ratio between surface velocity and the depth-averaged velocity based on the concurrent ADCP measurements; 3) validating the capacity of the EWSV for capturing rapid flow velocity. As results, the velocity measured near the center by the fixed EWSV overestimated about 15% of the cross-sectional mean velocity. The converting ratio from the surface velocity to the depth-averaged velocity was 0.8 rather than 0.85 of a conventional ratio. Finally, the EWSV revealed unstable velocity output when the flow velocity was higher than 2 m/s.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of hydrogen embrittlement od Zr-2.5Nb CANDU pressure tube. The test were performed at three hydrogen contents for transverse tensile and CCT specimens while the test temperatures were changed (RT to 300$^{\circ}C$). The specimens were directly machined from the tube retaining original curvature using electric discharge machine. Both the transverse tensile and the fracture toughness tests showed the hydrogen embrittlement clearly at RT but this phenomenon was disappeared while the test temperature arrived over 250$^{\circ}C$. From the fracture toughness test, it was found that fracture toughness dJ/da was increased up to 200$^{\circ}C$ and then decreased.

  • The experiments of laser-guided de discharge were carried out by using pulsed Nd:YAG laser radiation at low air pressure ranging from 0.3 to 20 torr. The minimum laser-guided de discharge voltages($V_{MD}$) at given pressure and distances between anode and cathode electrode were obtained. In order to generate TEM(transverse electromagnetic waves) modes, a pinhole was installed between a rod and a half mirror, and its diameter was adjusted from 6mm to 1.7mm. And then, we investigated the characteristics of laser-guided de discharge corresponding to different TEM modes. As a result, it was found that $V_{MD}$ at $TEM_{00}$ mode was lower than $V_{MD}$ at multimodes.

  • The interception capabilities of storm water grate inlet were analyzed in this paper. The hydraulic model lot gutter flow was used to estimate the interception capability. With the consideration of width and length of road, gutter discharges were ranged of 4-15l/sec. The transverse slopes of gutter were selected 4, 7 and 10%. The longitudinal slopes were 0, 2, 5 and 7%. The four sizes of storm water grate inlet were used in this experiments ($30\times40cm,\;40\times50cm,\;40\times100cm,\;40\times150cm$). The total number of experimental cases were 240. As the transverse slopes of gutter increased, the interception capability also increased. As the flow width in gutter and the discharge were lower, the interception efficiencies increased and the longitudinal slopes of road increased, the interception efficiencies decreased. The empirical formula with the factors of total inflow discharge, the longitudinal slope and the transverse slope of gutter were derived. These equations could be used to estimate the intercepting discharge of grate inlet. The reasonable construction space of grate inlet for the road widths, the longitudinal slopes, the transverse slopes and the grate inlet sizes were suggested.
