  • After an earthquake, fire and gas explosions are more likely to cause more casualties in cities with many apartment buildings and large complex buildings. In order to prevent this, seismic design is necessary for the fire protection sprinkler system. However, most systems currently use stainless-steel pipes, although synthetic resin pipes are used in some special places. These materials are susceptible to vibration and earthquakes. This study evaluated the displacement absorption flexibility of polyethylene (PE) and aluminum (Al) multi-layered composite pipes to increase the seismic performance in a vibration environment and during earthquakes. The seismic performance was compared with that of a stainless-steel and PE pipes. The seismic characteristics can be measured by measuring the amount and extent of vibration transmitted by the sprinkler pipe. This method can be used to judge the seismic characteristics to attenuate the vibration during an earthquake. The seismic characteristics of the pipe were verified by comparing the logarithmic attenuation rate to the initial response displacement of the vibration generated by the transverse vibration measurement method.

  • In this study, Ti powder/Polymer concrete composites were processed by adding the PZT powder, one of the piezoelectric materials, to improve the vibration damping effect of Polymer concrete. Ti powder was added at a constant ratio in order to maximize the vibration damping effect using the piezoelectric effect. Three types of composite material specimens were prepared: a specimen without PZT powder, specimens with 2.5 wt% and 5 wt% of PZT powder. The vibration characteristics and compression properties were analyzed for all specimens. As a result, it was confirmed that as the addition ratio of PZT powder increased, the Inertance value at the resonant frequency decreased due to the piezoelectric effect when the vibration generated from Ti powder/polymer concrete was transmitted. Especially, the Inertance value was decreased by about 19.3% compared to the specimen without PZT at the resonant frequency. The change in acceleration with time also significantly decreased as PZT powder was added, confirming the effect of PZT addition. In addition, through the compression strength test, it was found that the degree of deterioration in compression properties due to the addition of PZT up to 5 wt% was insignificant, and it was confirmed that the powder was evenly dispersed in the composites through the cross-sectional analysis of the specimen.

  • The low-voltage connection box used as a low-voltage transmission line of KEPCO is intended to branch or connect to an underground line. In comparison with the utility considering the aesthetics of the distance, and safety measures are needed. In this paper, temperature and humidity, $CO_2$, water level, acceleration, and vibration sensor are installed inside the underground low voltage handhole, and the sensor data is transmitted to the ground using the Zigbee module. Antenna (Bolted Antenna) for communication with the ground was proposed and the data reception through it was confirmed. In the LF mode and the HEX mode, the transmitted data was confirmed to be a perfect reception success rate. In the case of the bolted antenna, the difference between the ground state and the underwater state was observed as a result of the experiment in the environmental environment. However, It was judged that reception sensitivity was sufficient for communication. The received data could be confirmed through PC based GUI.

  • In the case of an elevated railway station, structure borne noise and vibration due to structural limitations allow the load and vibration from railway vehicles to be directly transmitted to the station structure, resulting in an increase in the number of civil complaints from customers and staff of the station. The floating slab track system, which is well known as one of the solutions for reducing the noise and vibration from elevated railway stations, usually contains rubber mounts or rubber pads under the railway slab which act as a damper. These types of device have the disadvantage that is difficult to predetermine the exact stiffness and damping ratio under the nonlinear loads resulting from train services. In this study, an isolator with a friction type of wedge is introduced, which can be applied to floating slab track systems and to be designed with precisely the required stiffness. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the stiffness between the designed and experimental values is carried out, while the damping ratio, which is closely related to the friction wedge blocks, is deduced according to the train load condition. The performance tests of the isolator were conducted in accordance with the DIN 45673-7 standard which includes both static and dynamic load tests. The load conditions for the performance tests are designed to conform to the DIN standard related to the weight of the train and rail track, in order to perform vertical and horizontal load tests, so as to ensure the secure structural safety of the railway. Also, by checking the change aspect of the friction coefficients of the friction elements according to the loading rate, the vibration reduction performance of the friction type isolator with variable loading rate conditions is examined.

  • Electroglottograph(EGG) is a signal recorded from the vocal cord vibration by measuring electrical impedance across the vocal folds through the neck skin. The purpose of this study was to develop EGG system and to evaluate possibility for the application on speech analysis and laryngeal disease diagnosis. EGG system was composed of two pairs of ring electrodes, tuned amplifier, phase sensitive detector, low pass filter, and auto-gain controller. It was designed to extract electric impedance after detecting by amplitude modulation method with 2.7MHz carrier signal. Extracted signals were transmitted through line-in of PC sound card, sampled and quantized. Closed Quotient(CQ), Speed Quotient(SQ), Speed Index(SI), fundamental frequency of vocal cord vibration(F0), pitch variability of vocal fold vibration (Jitter), and peak-to-peak amplitude variability of vocal fold vibration(Shimmer) were analyzed as EGG parameters. Experimental results were as follows: the faster vocal fold vibration, the higher values in CQ parameter and the lower values in SQ and SI parameters. EGG and speech signals had the same fundamental frequency. CQ, SQ, and SI were significantly different between normal subjects and patients with laryngeal cancer. These results suggest that it is possible to implement portable EGG system to monitor the function of vocal cord and to test functional changes of the glottis.

  • This paper aimed at the development of a unified wireless control system in order to control various forms of vibration of bridges. This unified wireless control system unified all different systems each of which functioned for difference purpose such as measurement, analysis, judgement, and control of data acquired from the movement of structure. It was designed to control structures with feedback which was returned according to each different situation after analyzing various signals measured about the structure. In this system, every information in each step from measurement to control was wirelessly transmitted to its central system so that a manager was able to effectively monitor the whole process. Just for the case when any system control need to intervene occurred, a graph user interface was designed for better access. In order to evaluate its basic performance, an experiment was carried out to see how signal input and output were done by comparing its results with those of a wired system. On the basis of the experiment, a vibration control experiment was performed on a model of cable-stayed bridge to see if the unified wireless control system worked well in realtime. This was carried out under four conditions, and the graph and quantitative result under each condition were compared each other. All experiments proved that the unified wireless control system functioned as well as the wired one in terms of its basic performance and vibration control.

  • Reaction wheel assemblies(RWA) are expected to be one of the largest high frequency disturbance sources to the optical payload of satellites. To ensure the tight pointing-stability budget and high image quality of satellites, a vibration isolation device should be applied to the main disturbances. For developing the isolating system, the disturbances need to be identified and modeled accurately. In the present study, a modeling technique of RWA and its disturbance was described. The micro-vibration disturbances were generated numerically by using an analytical wheel and disturbance model. The parameter estimation scheme of the model was suggested, and the RWA and disturbance modeling technique was verified through the numerical example analysis. The analytical results show that the wheel and disturbance model can be accurately established by using the modeling technique proposed in the present study. The wheel and disturbance model is expected to be useful for development of the RWA isolator system.

  • The various systems as the seismic resistance systems are used to reduce the seismic response of structure. And the seismic isolation system among them is the system that reduces the seismic vibration to be transmitted from foundation to upper structure. The purpose of isolation system is to lengthen the period of structure and make its period shift from the dominant period of earthquake. In this study, the seismic behavior of arch structure with lead rubber bearing(LRB) and friction pendulum system(FPS) is analyzed. The arch structure is the simplest structure and has the basic dynamic characteristics among large spatial structures. Also, Large spatial structures have large vertical response by horizontal seismic vibration, unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When horizontal seismic load is applied to the large spatial structure with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the large spatial structure is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced.

  • Railroad is the major factor of vibration source in railway vehicles, and it must carefully maintained the original condition to secure the safety and good ride comfort of passenger. Measuring the condition of rail irregularities such as surface, alignment, gauge, twist and cant etc is required to maintain the good performance of railroad. Currently, the various rail irregularity measurement systems(EM120, ROGER1000K and the Total Rail Irregularity Measurement system of Korea High Speed Train) are operated in Korea to estimate the rail irregularity. It is hard to verify the correlation of one rail irregularity data of a measurement system with the other, because they have been adopted different rail irregularity estimation methods. The best method securing the reliability of the irregularity data is the direct confirmation on the ground where the measurement system had detected as a fault section, but it is impossible to apply all sections simultaneously due to limitation of time, labor, cost and equipments. There is a method to secure the reliability of the data by using acceleration values. Rail irregularities, the major factor of vibration in railway vehicle, are transmitted to the vehicle acceleration through masses, springs, dampers and joints as the system dynamic formation. In this study, Transition Function has been adopted by using the rail irregularity and the acceleration value regarding as input & output parameters respectively. It has been verified by comparing the analyzed results with real measured irregularity data from the Total Rail Irregularity Measurement system of Korea High Speed Train. Also various methods has been accomplished to verify the correlation between rail irregularities and acceleration values.

  • Rails are key elements in railway superstructure since these elements receive directly the train load transmitted by the wheels. Simultaneously, rails must provide effective stress transference to the rest of the track elements. This track element often deteriorates as a consequence of the vehicle passing or manufacturing imperfections that cause in rail several defects. Among these rail defects, transverse cracks highlights and are considered a severe pathology because they can suddenly trigger the rail failure. This study is focused on UIC-60 rails with transverse cracks. A 3-D FEM model is developed in ANSYS for the flawless rail in which conditions simulating the crack presence are implemented. To account for the inertia loss of the rail as a consequence of the cracking, a reduction of the bending stiffness of the rail is considered. The numerical models have been calibrated using the first four bending vibration modes in terms of frequencies. These vibration frequencies have been obtained using the Experimental Modal Analysis technique, studying the changes in the modal parameters of the rails induced by the crack and comparing the results obtained by the model with experimental results. Finally, the calibrated and validated models for the single rail have been implemented in a complete railway ballasted track FEM model in order to study the static influence of the cracks on the rail deflection caused by a load passing.
