  • After determining the type and string condition of conductor of 765kV transmission lines, we studied the mechanical strength system of insulator strings to support conductors and insulate conductors from towers. In this paper, for the insulator strings which will be used in 765kV transmission lines, we're going to optimally determine the mechanical strength system and supporting method in the consideration of the reliability, economics and the survey data of T/L routes, and also suggest the calculation method to stipulate for the application limits of suspension and strain insulator strings according to the loadspan and height difference of tower.

  • The leakage currents of transmission insulator were investigated as a function of environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall. The insulators were artificially contaminated with insoluble yellow soil and kaolin which helped salt to stick on the surface of insulator. The insulators contaminated with the grade of B, C, and D were installed in the KoChang Testing Center. The leakage currents were measured and compared with non-contaminated insulators. The results indicated that the most important factor affecting leakage current was humidity. After heavy rain, the artificially contaminated salt was dissolved, resulting in similar characteristics between with and without contamination

  • In order to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of home production porcelain insulators by change of the alumina addition amount, 360001bs ball socket type suspension insulators which were manufactured in 1989, 1995 and 2001 removed in transmission line and an experiment was performed. By the result, 8 wt.% alumina that influences the mechanical properties and arc resistance properties in case of insulators that were manufactured in 1989 was contained, and the relative density and the fracture toughness of insulators appeared by 94.2% and 1.4 ㎫$.$ $M^{\frac{1}{2}}$, respectively. However, 12 wt.% alumina was contained in case of insulators that were manufactured in 1995, and the relative density and the fracture toughness of insulators appeared preferably lower by 92% and 1.3㎫$.$ $M^{\frac{1}{2}}$, respectively. Amount of alumina was contained most by 17 wt.% in case of insulators that were manufactured in 2001. It was confirmed that the electrical and mechanical characteristics such as the relative density and the fracture toughness appeared excellently by 96% and 1.7㎫$.$ $m^{\frac{1}{2}}$, respectively.

  • This paper was the research of high voltage suspension insulator (400 [kN]) including pottery stone, feldspar, clay and alumina of 17 [wt%]. The slurry was fabricated after ball milling mixed raw materials. Green compacts were made by the extrusion of jiggering method and were sintered at 1300[$^{\circ}C$] for 50 [min.] in the tunnel kiln. The sintered density was reached to 97% of theoretical density, and the bending strength was 1658 [k $g_{f}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$] and hardness and fracture toughness which was measured by ICL( indentation crack length ) method were 1658 (kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and 27.5 [Gpa], respectively. In measurement of tana and insulation break voltage of 400 (kN) porcelain, tan$\delta$ took some numerical value between 17${\times}$10$_{-3}$ and 61${\times}$10$_{-3}$ and insulation break voltage value was 19.9$\pm$1.4 [㎸/mm]. The test was performed to research whether the shape of pin affect a overvoltage break load or not As a consequence, when a pin was designed a pin diameter 51 [mm] with the bottom form of two-step constructed with straight in the suspension insulator, Insulator showed overvoltage break load 52 [ton] of the highest value and reflected a fine characteristic in aged deterioration test which is one of the accelerated aging test. Also it could be confirmed a fine characteristic through performing the test that electrical property of insulator was established correctly in accordance with IEC 60383-1 standards.s.

  • The ageing cause in many porcelain suspension insulators which occur on transmission and distribution line with dead-end stings is mechanical stress in interface between porcelain and cement materials. It is known that the principal mechanical stress which give electrical failure is the results of the displacement is due to cement growth. We studied the effect of cement displacement resulting environmental ageing parameters on porcelain insulator mechanical properties for transmission line by simulation (ANSYS/NASTRAN program) and test methods. These simulation analysis and experimental results show that cement volume growth affects severely to be mechanical failure ageing.

  • This paper covers the insulation coordination of 765 KV transmission line in Korea Electric Power Corporation. The design for the lightning, switching surge, and contamination was conducted to increase the reliability of 765 KV line. The authors have used the result of a limited Westinghouse ANACOM swiching surge study of the Korea Electric Corporation's 765 KV Expansion plan. The study investigated the switching surge overvoltage distribution and maximum switching overvoltage when relosing 765 KV lines. They used the technical data of the suspension insulator for the contamination design, which was available from a foreign insulator manufacture. From this paper, the authors find out that the contamination design dominates to determine the number of insulator and the SOV design dominates the air clearance in the tower. Afterwards the authors will confirm this design by Demonstration Test with Korea Electro-technology Research Institute.

  • This paper presented the results of evaluation of artificially contaminated suspension insulators for transmission lines. The suspension insulators were contaminated with kaolin and clay which were included various amount of natural salt. The degree of contamination were evaluated by measuring equivalent salt deposit density(ESDD). Then, the leakage currents were measured as a function of applied voltage, degree of contamination, humidity.

  • Long span cross-rope suspension structure is an innovative structural system evolved from typical Cross-Rope Suspension (CRS) guyed tower, a type of supporting system with short span suspension cable supporting overhead power transmission lines. In mountainous areas, the span length of suspension cable was designed to be extended to hundreds or over one thousand meters, which is applicable for crossing deep valleys. Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) of overhead power transmission lines was considered to be one of the major factors of its fatigue and service life. In this paper, VIV and its controlling by Stockbridge damper for long span CRS was discussed. Firstly, energy balance method and finite element method for assessing VIV of CRS were presented. An approach of establishing FE model of long span CRS structure with dampers was introduced. The effect of Stockbridge damper for overall vibration of CRS was compared in both theoretical and numerical approaches. Results indicated that vibration characteristics of conductor in long span CRS compared with traditional tower-line system. Secondly, analysis on long span CRS including Stockbridge damper showed additional dampers installed were essential for controlling maximum dynamic bending stresses of conductors at both ends. Moreover, factors, including configuration and mass of Stockbridge damper, span length of suspension cable and conductor and number of spans of conductor, were assessed for further discussion on VIV controlling of long span CRS.

  • The reliability of power transmission lines depends on long-term performance of the suspension insulators used on the lines. The importance of such long-term performance of the insulators has been recently noted, but its evaluation method has not been established yet. In this paper, various causes of insulator deterioration are verified and laboratory test method for evaluating the long term performance of insulators are studied.

  • The non-uniform distribution of contamination on insulator surface has appreciable effects on flashover voltage, and corresponding researches are valuable for the better selection of outdoor insulation. In this paper, two typical types of porcelain and glass insulators which are widely used in ac lines were taken as the research subjects, and their corrections of AC flashover voltage under non-uniform pollution were studied. Besides, their flashover characteristics under different ratio (T/B) of top to bottom surface salt deposit density (SDD) were investigated, including the analysis of flashover voltage, surface pollution layer conductivity and critical leakage current. Test results gave the modified formulas for predicting flashover voltage of the two samples, which can be directly applied in the transmission line design. Also, the analysis delivered that, the basic reason why the flashover voltage increases with the decrease of T/B, is due to the decrease of equivalent surface conductivity of the whole surface and the decrease of critical leakage current. This research will be of certain value in providing references for outdoor insulation selection, as well as in proposing more information for revealing pollution flashover mechanism.
