  • As the power demand has increased, it is expected that the transmission system will have more complicated problems under the influence of investment reduction for overall power system. The route length per MW demand will be reduced gradually from 0.6[C-km/㎿] to 0.53 [C-km/㎿] in 2010. This comes up to a real serious problem of system planning and operation viewpoints HTS power technologies have properties to solve these complex transmission and distribution constraints, especially for metropolitan area, in the future. As the HTS technology has developed, the HTS cable technology can be the most effective alternative to solve the future expected transmission constraints as compared with other countermeasures in terms of economics, environments and system operation. This paper describes the general application methodology of developing 22.9 ㎸ HTS cable by CAST for practical distribution system, particularly, step-by-step application methodology of 22.9 ㎸ HTS cable to substitute the existing and planning 154 ㎸ cable. In this scheme, almost of the downtown 154 ㎸ substation of metropolitan city such as Seoul will be changed into 22,9 ㎸ switching station.

  • When a new transmission line is planned to construct, the system voltage and the conductor size of the transmission line should be decided by both economical and technical point of view. This paper presents a methodology to determine the optimal voltage for upgrading the transmission system voltage of existing the extra high voltage grid network by meeting the requirements of the transmission cost minimization as well as technical constraints of thermal limit and stability limit in the transmission line. As a case study, calculated are optimal voltages versus distance and capacity of a practically applicable transmission line with 4 bundles 2 circuits. By this study 400kV was selected as the next higher voltage for the existing 220kV Libyan grid network.

  • Grant-free random access (GFRA) can reduce the access delay and signaling cost, and satisfy the short transmission packet and strict delay constraints requirement in internet of things (IoT). IoT is a major trend in the future, which is characterized by the variety of applications and devices. However, most existing studies on GFRA only consider a single type of device and omit the effect of access delay. In this paper, we study GFRA in multicell massive multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) systems where different types of devices with various configurations and requirements co-exist. By introducing the backoff mechanism, each device is randomly activated according to the backoff parameter, and active devices randomly select an orthogonal pilot sequence from a predefined pilot pool. An analytical approximation of the average spectral efficiency for each type of device is derived. Based on it, we obtain the optimal backoff parameter for each type of devices under their delay constraints. It is found that the optimal backoff parameters are closely related to the device number and delay constraint. In general, devices that have larger quantity should have more backoff time before they are allowed to access. However, as the delay constraint become stricter, the required backoff time reduces gradually, and the device with larger quantity may have less backoff time than that with smaller quantity when its delay constraint is extremely strict. When the pilot length is short, the effect of delay constraints mentioned above works more obviously.

  • Recently, Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) with Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) scheme is introduced into Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) systems to improve digital services for User Equipments (UEs), especially for cell-edge UEs. However, Radio Resource Management (RRM), including Resource Block (RB) scheduling and Power Allocation (PA), in this scenario becomes challenging, due to the intercell cooperation. In this paper, we investigate the RRM problem for downlink transmission of HetNet system with Joint Processing (JP) CoMP (both joint transmission and dynamic cell selection schemes), aiming at maximizing weighted sum data rate under the constraints of both transmission power and backhaul capacity. First, joint RB scheduling and PA problem is formulated as a constrained Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) which is NP-hard. To simplify the formulation problem, we decompose it into two problems of RB scheduling and PA. For RB scheduling, we propose an algorithm with less computational complexity to achieve a suboptimal solution. Then, according to the obtained scheduling results, we present an iterative Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) method to solve the PA problem. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms. Two kinds of JP CoMP schemes are compared with a non-CoMP greedy scheme (max capacity scheme). Simulation results prove that the CoMP schemes with the proposed RRM algorithms dramatically enhance data rate of cell-edge UEs, thereby improving UEs' fairness of data rate. Also, it is shown that the proposed PA algorithms can decrease power consumption of transmission antennas without loss of transmission performance.

  • Nash Equilibrium (NE) is as useful tool for investigating a participant's strategic generation quantity in a competitive electricity market. Cournot model may give a mixed strategy NE instead of a pure strategy when transmission constraints are considered. A mixed strategy is difficult to compute, complicated to understand conceptually, and hard to implement in an electricity market practically. This paper presents that a mixed strategy does not appear in Stackelberg leader-follower model even under a transmission congestion. A solution method is proposed for the leader-follower model under a nondifferentiable space of a strategy variable. Based on the pure strategy NE with a transmission line congested, the merit of leader-follower model is shown from a social welfare point of view.

  • Rubber mounts so called grommets and pipes are two major paths of vibration transmission from a compressor, an important vibration source in an air conditioner, to the whole unit. A procedure of configuring the suction and discharge pipes of the compressor was developed in this paper so as to reduce the vibration transmission through the pipes as well as the grommets. Through investigating the effects of shapes and connecting disrections of pipe elements on vibration transmission, a guideline to configure the pipe layout, which enables to reduce vibration transmission, was proposed. The initial pipe layout by the guideline was optimized with the objective function, minimization of boty vibration transmission and the cost, and with the constraints to yield the final dimensions of the pipes. The procedure not only minimizes the transmitted force to the circumferential devices but enables to eliminate rubber blocks or dampers, which are generally used to avoid resonances of the pipe system.

  • A shape optimization problem is formulated to optimally design aluminum sandwich panel, which is used for high speed railway vehicle. An aluminum volume used in the panel is selected as a design objective with constraints on the stiffness and the transmission loss value. The formulated shape optimization problem is solved for a well -selected initial shape. The stiffness and transmission loss value of the obtained optimal shape are compared with those of the previously-reported panel.

  • A novel integrated optimization method is proposed to combine both generation and transmission line expansion problem considering bus voltage limit. Most of the existing researches on the combined generation and transmission expansion planning cannot consider bus voltages and reactive power flow limits because they are mostly based on the DC power flow model. In this paper the AC power flow model and nonlinear constraints related to reactive power are simplified and modified to improve the computation time and convergence. The proposed method has been successfully applied to Garver's six-bus system which is one of the most frequently used small scale sample systems to verify the transmission expansion method.

  • This paper presents a new approach for power flow calculation, which minimizes the transmission losses in power systems with the control of voltage magnitudes on P-V nodes. In this approach, the transmission losses are re-distributed to each P-V node, at each iteration, to reduce the effect of slack. The steepest descent method is adopted, in this study, to minimize the transmission losses augmented with penalty functions to account for voltage constraints. IEEE 14 and 30 buses test systems were used for the performance demonstration of the proposed method in this paper. The simulation results showed that the proposed method can reduce transmission losses and improve voltage profiles of power systems.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a power transmission system controlled with electric field strength. This device responses very rapidly when controlled by rapid and continuous electrical signal and can form a servosystem. Wear, noise and vibration during operation is very low level. This study was undertaken to investigate substitutive possibilities of this ER clutch for existing power transmission mechanism. An analytic relationships using rheological model (so called, 'Bingham plastic model') of ER fluid were developed, and operation constraints and optimum design concepts were constructed. With this relationships, typical responses of ER clutch and effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with existing mechanisms, an excellent performance of ER clutch was confirmed.confirmed.
