  • A modified $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary-layer flows with changing pressure gradient. In order to develop the model for this problem, the flow is divided into three regions; pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The effect of pressure gradient is taken into account in stream-wise intermittency factor, which bridges the eddy-viscosity models in the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. From intermittency data in various flows, Narashima's intermittency function, F(${\gamma}$), has been found to be proportional to $\chi$$^{n}$ according to the extent of pressure gradient. Three empirical correlations of intermittency factor being analyzed, the best one was chosen to calculate three benchmark cases of bypass transition flows with different free-stream turbulence intensity under arbitrary pressure gradient. It was found that the variations of skin friction and shape factor as well as the profiles of mean velocity in the transition region were very satisfactorily predicted.

  • A modified k-$\epsilon$ model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary layer flows. In order to develop the eddy viscosity model for the problem, the flow is divided into three regions; namely, pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The pre-transition eddy-viscosity is formulated by extending the mixing Length concept. In the transition region, the eddy-viscosity model employs two length scales, i.e., pre-transition length scale and turbulent length scale pertaining to the regions upstream and the downstream, respectively, and a university model of stream-wise intermittency variation is used as a function bridging the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. The proposed model is applied to calculate three benchmark cases of the transitional boundary layer flows with different free-stream turbulent intensity ( $1\%{\~}6\%$ ) under zero-pressure gradient. It was found that the profiles of mom velocity and turbulent intensity, local maximum of velocity fluctuations, their locations as well as the stream-wise variation of integral properties such as skin friction, shape factor and maximum velocity fluctuations are very satisfactorily Predicted throughout the flow regions.

  • Fracture energy values KV have been measured on cast steel, used in the container manufacture, by instrumented Charpy impact testing. This material has a large ductility on the upper transition region at $+20^{\circ}C$ and a ductile tearing with an expended plasticity before a brittle fracture on the lower transition region at $-20^{\circ}C$. To assess the fracture toughness of this material we use, the $K_{IC}$-KV correlations to measure the critical stress intensity factor $K_{IC}$ on the lower transition region and the dynamic force - displacement curves to measure the critical fracture toughness $J{\rho}_C$, the essential work of fracture ${\Gamma}_e$ on the upper transition region. It is found, using the $K_{IC}$-KV correlations, that the critical stress intensity factor $K_{IC}$ remains significant, on the lower transition region, which indicating that our testing material preserves his ductility at low temperature and it is apt to be used as a container's material. It is, also, found that the $J_{\rho}-{\rho}$ energetic criterion, used on the upper transition region, gives a good evaluation of the fracture toughness closest to those found in the literature. Finally, we show, by using the ${\Gamma}_e-K_{IC}$ relation, on the lower transition region, that the essential work of fracture is not suitable for the toughness measurement because the strong scatter of the experimental data. To complete this study by a numerical approach we used the ANSYS code to determine the critical fracture toughness $J_{ANSYS}$ on the upper transition region.

  • In the present study we examine physical characteristics of a thin and rigid magnetic flux tube with a steady flow inside, which is embedded vertically upward in the solar atmosphere. We found from this study that (1) The downward material flow gives rise to a dominant heating in the flux tube which works with the conductive heating in the same direction. However, the upflow flow creates a dominant cooling which works against the conductive heating, resulting in a steeper temperature gradient with a shallower transition region. (2) Since the thickness of the transition region determines the material content in the transition region, a broader transition region of the downflow tube produces a larger differential measure.

  • We investigate velocity oscillations in the active region plage by using the high-spatial, high-spectral and high-temporal resolution spectral data acquired by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). From the Mn I $2801.907{\AA}$ (lower chromosphere), C II (lower transition region) and Si IV (middle transition region) lines, we measure the line of sight Doppler velocity at different atmospheric layers, and present results of wavelet analysis of the plage region with a range of periods from 2 to 8 minutes. In addition, we present correlations of the oscillations from the lower chromosphere to the middle transition region. Finally, we will discuss the regional dependence of the oscillation properties on physical properties such as temperature and magnetic field inclination.

The pre-transition eddy-viscosity is formulated by extending the mixing length concept. • The Large-scale structure of the circular jet in the transition region, which influences the subsequent flow in the turbulent region, was studied experimentally. Measuring equipments are composed of the two channel hot-wire anemometer, the computer controlled two-directional traverse mechanism, the data acquisition system, and FFT-analyzer. The circular jet has 50mm diameter. The mean velocity distribution, the velocity fluctuation, the auto 'cross correlations and the power spectra were acquired at moderate Reynolds number of 10$^{4}$. And the VITA method was used to measure the convection velocity of Large-scale eddy. The phase of u'is in advance of that of v'in all regions. .over bar. $R_{u}$(.tau.=0) is approximately zero in the potential core region, but a small regular deviation is observed. At a position in the mixing layer region the convection velocity is different along the part of the eddy, and in this experiment the convection velocity of the inner region is larger than the outer region. The averge convection velocity of the eddy along y/D=0 was approximately constant in the transition region.D=0 was approximately constant in the transition region.

  • When an axisymmetric body moves through air the boundary layer near the stagnation region remains laminar and subsequently it goes through transition to turbulent. The experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of wall pressure fluctuations at the initial stage of boundary layer flow including transition. Flush-mounted microphones are used to measure the wall pressure fluctuations at the transition and turbulent boundary layer region of a blunt axisymmetric body in the low noise wind tunnel. It if found from this study that the wall pressure fluctuations in the transition region is higher than that in the turbulent region.

  • Fracture toughness characterization in the transition region is examined for heat-treated and ionnitrided Ni-Cr-Mo steel. After heat treatment for the specimens of Ni-Cr-Mo steel, organizations of specimens-specimens which are heat-treated and ion-nitrided for 4 hours at 500 .deg. C and 5 torr in 25%N/dub 2/-75%H/sub 2/mixed gas-, hardness variety, and X-ray diffraction pattern of the ion-nitriding compound layer are observed. Fracture toughenss test of unloading compliance method were conducted over the regions from room trmperature to -70.deg. C. The compound layer was consisted of r'=Fe/sub 4/N phase and ion-nitrided layer's depth was 200mm from surface. The transition regions of heat-treated and ion-nitrided specimens were about -30.deg. C and -50.deg. C, respectively. The transition region of ion-nitrided specimens is estimated less than that of heat-treated one, and this is the effect of ion-nitriding.

  • This paper presents the calculation methods of liquid release rate in the transition region when hazardous materials leak from the pipeline due to an unwanted accident. For the laminar and turbulent flow region, liquid release rate from a pipeline can be calculated by using a commercial software or by using calculator based on the models(equations) suggested by Crowl and Louvar et al. However, there has been no corresponding model for the transition flow region. In this paper. we showed that the turbulent model may be used as an equation generally used in the transition region for conservative hazard analysis if safety factor $30\%$ is added to the value calculated by the turbulent model. In this regard, we first calculated the release rate from liquid pipeline in the transition region by using experimental data on Fanning friction factor depending on Reynolds number which Lap-Mou Tam et al. had introduced, then compared it with that of the laminar and turbulent models in transition region.
