Two-dimensional prediction capability of several analysis codes, such as XFOIL, MSES, and KFLOW, is compared and analyzed based on computational results of airfoil flows. To this end the transition transport equations are coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations for the prediction of the natural transition and the separation-induced transition. Experimental data of aerodynamic coefficients are used for comparison with numerical results for the transitional flows. Numerical predictions using the transition transport model show a good agreement with experimental data. Discrepancies have been found in the prediction of the pressure drag are mainly caused by the difference in the far-field circulation correction methods.

Transition of flows in natural convection in a horizontal cylindrical annulus is investigated for the fluid with Pr=0.2. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady crescent-shaped eddy flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with like-rotating eddies. After the first Hopf bifurcation, however, a reverse transition from oscillatory to a steady flow occurs by the flow pattern variation. Hysteresis phenomenon occurs between the solution branches of up-scan and down-scan stages, and dual solutions with one steady and one oscillatory flow are found. Overall Nusselt of the flows at the flows at the down-scan stage is greater than that at the up-scan stage.

A modified $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary-layer flows with changing pressure gradient. In order to develop the model for this problem, the flow is divided into three regions; pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The effect of pressure gradient is taken into account in stream-wise intermittency factor, which bridges the eddy-viscosity models in the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. From intermittency data in various flows, Narashima's intermittency function, F(${\gamma}$), has been found to be proportional to $\chi$$^{n}$ according to the extent of pressure gradient. Three empirical correlations of intermittency factor being analyzed, the best one was chosen to calculate three benchmark cases of bypass transition flows with different free-stream turbulence intensity under arbitrary pressure gradient. It was found that the variations of skin friction and shape factor as well as the profiles of mean velocity in the transition region were very satisfactorily predicted.

Natural convection in a wide-gap horizontal annulus is considered, and the transition of flows and the bifurcation phenomenon are investigated for the fluids with Pr=0.2 and 0.3. At Pr=0.2, a bicellular flow pattern is observed at high Rayleigh number, and the solution is unique. At Pr=0.3, both the steady unicellular and bicellular flows exist above a certain critical Rayleigh number. For the fluids of Pr=0.2, the bicellular flow can be obtained by the impulsive heating of the inner cylinder, but it is not obtained from the zero initial condition for Pr=0.3. Hysteresis phenomena have not been observed. A transition from a bicellular flow to a unicellular flow occurs for Pr=0.3.

We have proposed a new approach based on energy gradient concept for the study of flow instability and turbulent transition in parallel flows in our previous works. It was shown that the disturbance amplitude required for turbulent transition is inversely proportional to Re, which is in agreement with the experiments for imposed transverse disturbance. In present study, the energy gradient theory is extended to the generalized curved flows which have much application in turbomachinery and other fluid delivery devices. Within the frame of the new theory, basic theorems for flow instability in general cases are provided in details. Examples of applications of the theory are given from our previous studies which show comparison of the theory with available experimental data. It is shown that excellent agreement has been achieved for several configurations. Finally, various prediction methods for turbulent transition are reviewed and commented.
A modified k-$\epsilon$ model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary layer flows. In order to develop the eddy viscosity model for the problem, the flow is divided into three regions; namely, pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The pre-transition eddy-viscosity is formulated by extending the mixing Length concept. In the transition region, the eddy-viscosity model employs two length scales, i.e., pre-transition length scale and turbulent length scale pertaining to the regions upstream and the downstream, respectively, and a university model of stream-wise intermittency variation is used as a function bridging the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. The proposed model is applied to calculate three benchmark cases of the transitional boundary layer flows with different free-stream turbulent intensity ( $1\%{\~}6\%$ ) under zero-pressure gradient. It was found that the profiles of mom velocity and turbulent intensity, local maximum of velocity fluctuations, their locations as well as the stream-wise variation of integral properties such as skin friction, shape factor and maximum velocity fluctuations are very satisfactorily Predicted throughout the flow regions.
The description of transitional flows by means of RANS equations is sometimes based on non-local approaches which require the computation of some boundary layer properties. In this work a non-local Laminar Kinetic Energy model is used to predict transitional and separated flows. Usually the non-local term of this model is evaluated along the grid lines of a structured mesh. An alternative approach, which does not rely on grid lines, is introduced in the present work. This new approach allows the use of fully unstructured meshes. Furthermore, it reduces the grid-dependence of the predicted results. The approach is employed to study the transitional flows in the T106c turbine cascade and around a NACA0021 airfoil by means of a discontinuous Galerkin method. The local nature of the discontinuous Galerkin reconstruction is exploited to implement an adaptive algorithm which automatically refines the mesh in the most significant regions.

In the present study, characteristics of steady state laminar flows of a straight duct connected to a 180$^{\circ}$ curved duct were examined in the entrance region through experimental and numerical analyses. For the analysis, the governing equations of laminar flows in the Cartesian coordinate system were applied. Flow characteristics such as velocity profiles, and secondary flows were investigated numerically and experimentally in a square cross-sectional straight duct by the PIV system and a CFD code(STAR CD). For the PIV measurement, working fluid produced from mosquito coils smoke. The experimental data were obtained at 9 points dividing the test sections by 400 mm. Experimental and numerical results can be summarized as follows. Critical Reynolds number, Recr which indicates transition from laminar steady flow to transition steady flow was 2,150. As Reynolds number, Re, was increased, dimensionless velocity profiles at the outer wall were increased due to the effect of the centrifugal force and the secondary flows. The intensity of a secondary flow became stronger at the inner wall rather than the outer wall regardless of Reynolds number.

In the first part of the paper, Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis of the combusting flow within a high-swirl lean premixed gas turbine combustor and over the $1^{st}$ row nozzle guide vanes is presented. In this analysis, the focus of the investigation is the fluid dynamics at the combustor/turbine interface and its impact on the turbine. The predictions show the existence of a highly-rotating vortex core in the combustor, which is in strong interaction with the turbine nozzle guide vanes. This has been observed to be in agreement with the temperature indicated by thermal paint observations. The results suggest that swirling flow vortex core transition phenomena play a very important role in gas turbine combustors with modern lean-premixed dry low emissions technology. As the predictability of vortex core transition phenomena has not yet been investigated sufficiently, a fundamental validation study has been initiated, with the aim of validating the predictive capability of currently-available modelling procedures for turbulent swirling flows near the sub/supercritical vortex core transition. In the second part of the paper, results are presented which analyse such transitional turbulent swirling flows in two different laboratory water test rigs. It has been observed that turbulent swirling flows of interest are dominated by low-frequency transient motion of coherent structures, which cannot be adequately simulated within the framework of steady-state RANS turbulence modelling approaches. It has been found that useful results can be obtained only by modelling strategies which resolve the three-dimensional, transient motion of coherent structures, and do not assume a scalar turbulent viscosity at all scales. These models include RSM based URANS procedures as well as LES and DES approaches.

Computational simulations of turbulent flows around a model ship have been performed to investigate an influence of TVD schemes on the accuracy of advective terms associated with ship resistances. Several TVD schemes including upwind, second-order upwind, vanLeer, and QUICK as well as a nonTVD linear scheme were studied by examining temporal and spatial characteristics of accuracy transition in adjacent cells to the hull. Even though vanLeer scheme was the most accurate among TVD schemes in both structured and unstructured grid systems, the ratio of accuracy switch from 2nd order to 1st order in vanLeer scheme was considerable compared with the 2nd order linear scheme. Also, the accuracy transition was observed to be overally scattered in the unstructured grid while the accuracy transition in the structured grid appeared relatively clustered. It concluded that TVD schemes had to be carefully used in computational simulations of turbulent flows around a model ship due to the loss of accuracy despite its attraction of numerical stability.
