Study of turbulent mixing layers has been a popular subject from the point of view of both practical application and phenomenological importance in engineering field. Turbulent mixing layers can be applied in many fields where rapid transition to turbulence is desirable in order to prevent boundary layer separation or to enhance mixing. The ability to control mixing, structure and growth of the shear flow would obviously have a considerable impact on many engineering applications. In addition to practical applications, free shear flows are one of the simplest flows to understand the fundamental mechanism in the transition process to turbulence. After the discovery of large-scale vortical structure in free shear flows many researchers have investigated the physical mechanism of generation and dissipation processes of the vortical structure. This study investigated the role of the large-scale vortical structures in the turbulent mixing layer using LES(Large-Eddy Simulation). The result shows that the pairing interaction of the vortical structure plays an important role in the growth rate of a mixing layer. It is found that the turbulence quantities depend strongly on the velocity ratio. It is also found that the vorticity in the high-velocity-side can extract energy from the mean flow, while the vorticity in the low-velocity-side lose energy by the viscous dissipation. Finally the results suggest the guideline to obtain the desired flow by control of the velocity ratio.
This experimental study investigates the wake flow behind the flow characteristics around staggered tube arrays. In this experiment, the principal aim is to investigate the transition mechanism of the large vortex generating process in the wake having unique vortex shedding pattern. The detailed visualization is carried out using the PIV measurement. The transition mechanism of the large generating vortex is clarified by showing the streak lines. the vorticity and the statistical fluctuating velocity distributions.
We investigate the slippage effect in a micro-channel depending on the surface characteristics; hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and super-hydrophobic wettabilities. The micro-scale grooves are fabricated on the vertical wall to make the super-hydrophobic surfaces, which enable us visualize the flow fields near walls and directly measure the slip length. Velocity profiles are measured using micro-particle image velocimetry (Micro-PIV) and compared those in the hydrophilic glass, hydrophobic PDMS, and super-hydrophobic PDMS micro-channels. To directly measure the velocity in the super-hydrophobic micro-channel, the transverse groove structures are fabricated on the vertical wall in the micro-channel. The velocity profile near the wall shows larger slip length and, if the groove structure is high and wide, the liquid meniscus forms curves into the valley so that the wavy flow is created after the grooves.
In this paper, we consider on hard contact transition control strategies. Hard contact transition phase can be divided into two definitely different phases,“Pre-Transition Phase”and“Transition Phase”. Here we focus on the“Pre-Transition Phase”and we propose three control methods. First, we propose a novel con-troller named as “Suppression Controller”which is not only stable but also simple to implement. Second, we present passive damper named as“Flexible-Damped Joint”Which is good solution in Circumventing pre-transition Phase. Third, We suggest a stable and simple controller which can maximize joint damping and minimize recontact velocity in flexible-damped joint. It is named as“Joint Damping Controller”.
J.D. Hot-wire measurements are performed in boundary layers developing on a NACA0012 airfoil over which wakes pass periodically. The Reynolds number based on chord length of the airfoil is 2$\times$10(sup)5 and the wakes are generated by circular cylinders rotating clockwise and counterclockwise around the airfoil. This paper and its companion Part II describe the phenomena of wake-induced transition of the boundary layers on the airfoil using measured data; phase-and time-averaged streamwise mean velocities, turbulent fluctuations, integral parameters and wall skin frictions. This paper describes the background and facility together with results of time-averaged quantities. Due to the passing wake with mean velocity defects and high turbulence intensities, the laminar boundary layer is periodically disturbed at the upstream station and becomes steady-state transitional boundary layer at the downstream station. The velocity defect in the passing wake changes the local pressure at the leading of the airfoil, significantly affects the time-mean pressure distribution on the airfoil and eventually, has influence on the transition process of the boundary layer.

A numerical simulation for a nonslender BWB UCAV configuration with a rounded leading edge and span of 1.0 m was performed to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics. Numerical results were compared with experimental data obtained at a free stream velocity of 50 m/s and at angles of attack from -4 to $26^{\circ}$. The Reynolds number, based on the mean chord length, is $1.25{\times}106$. 3D multi-block hexahedral grids are used to guarantee good grid quality and to efficiently resolve the boundary layer. Menter's shear stress transport model and two transition models (${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ model and ${\gamma}$ model) were used to assess the effect of the laminar/turbulent transition on the flow characteristics. Aerodynamic coefficients, such as drag, lift, and the pitching moment, were compared with experimental data. Drag and lift coefficients of the UCAV were predicted well while the pitching moment coefficient was underpredicted at high angles of attack and influenced strongly by the selected turbulent models. After assessing the pressure distribution, skin friction lines and velocity field around UCAV configuration, it was found that the transition effect should be considered in the prediction of aerodynamic characteristics of vortical flow fields.
Single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer were locally investigated for confined planar water jets. The detailed distributions of the wall temperature and the convection coefficient as well as the typical boiling curves were discussed. The curve for the single-phase convection indicated the developing laminar boundary layer, accompanied by monotonic increase of the wall temperature in the stream direction. Boiling was initiated from the furthest downstream as heat flux increased. Heat transfer variation according to the streamwise location was reduced as heat flux increased enough to create the vigorous nucleate boiling. Velocity effects were considered for the confined free-surface jet. Higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipient to be delayed more. The transition to turbulence precipitated by the bubble-induced disturbance was obvious only for the highest velocity, which enabled the boiling incipient to start in the middle of the heated surface, rather than the furthest downstream as was the case of the moderate and low velocities. The temperature at offset line were somewhat tower than those at the centerline for single-phase convection and partial boiling, and these differences were reduced as the nucleate boiling developed. For the region prior to transition, the convection coefficient distributions were similar in both cases while the temperatures were somewhat lower in the submerged jet. For single-phase convection, transition was initiated at $x/W{\cong}2.5$ and completed soon for the submerged jet, but the onset of transition was retarded to the distance at $x/W{\cong}6$ for the fee-surface jet.
This paper describes the phenomena of wake-induced transition of the boundary layers on a NACA0012 airfoil using measured phase-averaged data. Especially, the phase-averaged wall shear stresses are reasonably evaluated using the principle of Computational Preston Tube Method. Due to the passing wake, the turbulent patch is generated in the laminar boundary layer on the airfoil and the boundary layer becomes temporarily transitional. The patches propagate downstream with less speed than free-stream velocity and merge with each other at further down stream station, and the boundary layer becomes more transitional. The generation of turbulent patch at the leading edge of the airfoil mainly depends on velocity defects and turbulent intensity profiles of passing wakes. However, the growth and merging of turbulent patches depend on local streamwise pressure gradients as well as characteristics of turbulent patches. In this transition process, the present experimental data show very similar features to the previous numerical and experimental studies. It is confirmed that the two phase-averaged mean velocity dips appear in the outer region of transitional boundary layer for each passing cycle. Relatively high values of the phase-averaged turbulent fluctuations in the outer region indicate the possibility that breakdown occurs in the outer layer not near the wall.
