Transient thermal response of five types of underwear(cotton jersey, wool jersey, nylon jersey, cotton mesh and polyester mesh) for a protective coverall is evaluated using a sweating thermal manikin. Experimental protocol for transient thermal response of the sweating thermal manikin was also proposed. As results, it was found that steady state thermal response from sweating thermal manikin was not sensitive enough to evaluate thermal comfort of the experimental garments. However, when half time is used as an index of the heat flux change in transient thermal response, difference was found among underwear materials. Half time of cotton was the shortest and heat transfer of cotton was the fastest followed by polyester mesh, cotton jersey, nylon jersey and wool jersey. Dynamic thermal response of wool underwear was quite different from that of cotton underwear. Wool shows quite less heat flow at the initial stage, however, moisture permeability of wool was higher than cotton at the later stage. It was difficult to distinguish surface temperature difference visually using thermogram taken right before the completion of dry and wet test in steady state thermal response.

Several numerical or analytical models have been proposed to analyze the thermal response of vertical ground heat exchangers (GHEX). However, most models are valid only after several hours of operation since they neglect the heat capacity of the borehole. Recently, the short time response of the GHEX became important in system simulation to improve efficiency. In this paper, a simple new method to evaluate the short time response of the GHEX by using an analogy model of electric circuit transient analysis was presented. The new transient heat exchanger model adopting the concept of thermal capacitance of the borehole as well as the steady-state thermal resistance showed the transient thermal resistance of the borehole. The model was validated by in-situ thermal response test and then compared with the DST model of the TRNSYS program.

The transmission performance of TSV considering the effect of electronic-thermal coupling is an new challenge in three dimension integrated circuit. This paper presents the thermal equivalent circuit (TEC) model of the TSV, and discussed the thermal equivalent parameters for TSV. Si layer is equivalent to transmission line according to its thermal characteristic. Thermal transient response (TTR) of TSV considering electronic-thermal coupling effects are proposed, iteration flow electronic-thermal coupling for TSV is analyzed. Furthermore, the influences of TTR are investigated with the non-coupling and considering coupling for TSV. Finally, the relationship among temperature, thickness of $SiO_2$, radius of via and frequency of excitation source are addressed, which are verified by the simulation.

The present study performs an experimental measurement on transient thermal response of an air-conditioned space by a variable air volume (VAV) system with a PI(pro-portional-integral) control logic. A thermal chamber with a PI controlled VAV unit is constructed to verify the previously suggested stratified multi-zone model. The effects of thermal parameters and control parameters such as supply air temperature and PI control factor are investigated by implementing the thermal chamber test. The experimental results obtained show that transient behavior of the air-conditioned space-temperature is in good accordance with the simulation results of the stratified thermal model.
Thermal mass flow meters (TMFMs) are most widely used for measuring mass flow rates in the semiconductor industry. A TMFM should have a short response time in order to measure the time-varying flow rate rapidly and accurately. Therefore it is important to study transient heat transfer phenomena in the sensor tube of a TMFM that is the most critical part in the TMFM. In the present work, a simple numerical model for transient heat transfer phenomena of the sensor tube of a TMFM is presented. Numerical solutions for the tube and fluid temperatures in a transient state are obtained using the proposed model and compared with experimental results to validate the proposed model. Based on numerical solutions, heat transfer mechanism in a transient state in the sensor tube is explained. Finally, a correlation for predicting the response time of a sensor tube is presented. The correlation is verified by experimental results.

In the boundary layer of supersonic or hypersonic vehicles, there is the conversion from kinetic energy to thermal energy, called aerodynamic heating. Aerodynamic heating has to be considered to design supersonic vehicles, because it induces severe heat flux to surface. Transient heat transfer analysis with CFD is used to predict thermal response of vehicles, however transient heat transfer analysis needs excessive computing powers. Loosely coupled method is widely used for evaluating thermal response, however it needs to be revised for overestimated heat flux. In this research, quasi-transient method, which is combined loosely coupled method and conjugate heat transfer analysis, is proposed for evaluating thermal response with efficiency and reliability. Defining reference time of splitting flight scenario for transient simulation is important on accuracy of quasi-transient method, however there is no algorithm to determine. Therefore the research suggests the algorithm with various flow conditions to define reference time. Supersonic flow field of blunt body with constant acceleration is calculated to evaluate quasi-transient method. Temperature difference between transient and quasi-transient method is about 11.4%, and calculation time reduces 28 times for using quasi-transient method.
Novel characterization of thermal properties of a battery has been introduced by defining its frequency-dependent thermal impedance function. Thermal impedance function can be approximated as a thermal impedance spectrum by analyzing experimental temperature transient which is related to the thermal impedance function through Laplace transformation. In order to obtain temperature transient, a process has been devised to generate external heat pulse with heating wire and to measure the response of battery. This process is used to study several commercial Li-ion batteries of cylindrical type. The thermal impedance measurements have been performed using potentionstat/galvanostate controlled digital signal processor, which is more commonly available than flow-meter usually applied for thermal property measurements. Thermal impedance spectra obtained for batteries produced by different manufactures are found to differ considerably. Comparison of spectra at different states of charge indicates independence of thermal impedance on charging state of battery. It is shown that thermal impedance spectrum can be used to obtain simultaneously thermal capacity and thermal conductivity of battery by non-linear complex least-square fit of the spectrum to thermal impedance model. Obtained data is used to simulate a response of the battery to internal heating during discharge. It is found that temperature inside the battery is by one-third larger that on its surface. This observation has to be considered to prevent damage by overheating.

This research investigates the thermoelastic transient behavior of a thermally loaded slab made of a thermal diode-like material which has two directional thermal conductivity values (low and high). Finite difference analysis is used to obtain the elastic response of the slab based on the temperature solutions. It is found that the rate of heat transfer through the thickness of the slab decreases with reducing the ratio between the low and high thermal conductivity values (R). In addition, reducing R makes the slab less responsive to the thermal load when heated from the direction associated with the low thermal conductivity value.
This paper is concerned with the theoretical treatment of transient thermoelastic problems involving a functionally graded hollow cylinder with piecewise power law due to asymmetrical heating from its surfaces. The thermal and thermoelastic constants of each layer are expressed as power functions of the radial coordinate, and their values continue on the interfaces. The exact solution for the two-dimensional temperature change in a transient state, and thermoelastic response of a hollow cylinder under the state of plane strain is obtained herein. Some numerical results for the temperature change and the stress distributions are shown in figures. Furthermore, the influence of the functional grading on the thermal stresses is investigated.
Outcomes of the project "Comprehensive Verification of the FALCON Code for Calculation of Nuclear Fuel Temperature" relating to calculation of fuel temperature during relatively fast thermal transients are presented. Good prediction capabilities of the FALCON MOD01 code coupled with the GRSW-A code are shown as applied to the data of the TF3 and TF5 tests from the Transient Temperature Experiment IFA-507. The IFA-507 related dataset of the OECD/NEA International Fuel Performance Experiments (IFPE) Database is extended by the reconstructed dynamics of the axial power distribution in the rods during the transient phase of the experiment. Based on the code calculation, the time constant of the thermal fuel response to a power transient is estimated.
