  • In this paper, the mechanism identification and the avoidance measures on the phenomena of transient acoustic vibration amplified at the water-supply piping system to regulate the steam temperature of the boiler reheater in 500MW class supercritical power plant are presented. The pressure pulsation waves induced by the impeller passing of two feed-water pumps with five blades are coincident with the local acoustic modes of boiler reheater water-supply piping system. There are the phenomena amplified at the peaks of 5X, 10X, 15X and 20X in spectrums of piping vibration, sound pressure, and the feed-water's pressure pulsation waves. The shut-off device is installed in the piping system for the interception of pressure pulsation waves transmitted from two feed-water pumps and the modified design change of the piping layout is applied for the acoustic resonance avoidance. The acoustic natural frequencies are separated from the harmonics of pressure pulsation waves induced by the pump impellers passing through the design change of the span length. The acoustic vibration is gone by resonance avoidance measures. As a result, more than 20 dBA reduction is achieved from 100 dBA to 80 dBA.

  • This paper provides procedures to effectively determine arrangement of hydraulic type top-bracings, which are popular for the main engine of the mid and large sized commercial vessels. Analyzing the operation mechanism of hydraulic top-bracing, ideal unified nonlinear stiffness curve is presented for linear frequency response analysis and nonlinear transient response analysis. Nonlinear stiffnesses of the curve are determined based on the regression analysis of test results. It is noted from linear frequency response analysis, initial setting pressure is most important among the setting values of the other stiffness intervals. From transient response analyses for two top-bracing arrangement scenarios, it is recognized that, as far as initial setting pressure is well controlled for the concerning vessels, only two top-bracings are enough to suppress H-mode excitation forces from main engine.

  • Collection efficiencies and pressure drops for the removal of small particles from dilute liquid suspensions by granular bed filter were calculated using network model. The network model is composed of a number of nodes connected with cylindrical bond and particles are deposited on the bond surface. The collection efficiency of each cylindrical bond was predicted using unit cell model corresponding to the pore volume of cylindrical pore both at the initial and transient states. Deposited particles on the collector surface may act as additional collector and reduce the pore size of the collector. As a result, the collection efficiency was improved and pressure drop increased with deposition. Even though the stochastic nature of network requires a large number of simulation work, the model proposed in this study can be used in investigating collection efficiency and pressure drop.

  • Classical theory of hydrodynamic pressure on dams during earthquakes is revisited and examined with linear transient theory. Because the ground motion during earthquakes is not only transient but also consists of random horizontal and vertical motions, it is proper to treat hydrodynamic pressure on dams with transient theory for random, transient earthquake motions. The present study fines that surface waves are negligible and that the present theory agrees well with the classical theory if the ground motion is horizontal and harmonic with a high frequency.

  • The turbopump+gas generator (TP+GG) coupled test for the liquid rocket engine development was performed. By comparing the results of a engine startup transient analysis with this test results, the verification of the analysis model was performed. From this, as to the analysis of the engine startup, the method calculating the pressure ratio of the turbine during the initial stage of startup was improved. And a fact that the transient heat transfer phenomenon between the working fluid and the solid parts of turbine effects to the calculation of turbine pressure ratio and consequentially to the startup analysis was revealed.

  • Many techniques of leak detection in pipeline systems have developed based on the propagation wave speeds and wave attenuation. In this paper, the transient analysis methodology is used for calculating the wave speed in the plastic pipe and a frequency analysis methodology is developed for leakage detection in water pipe networks. Data acquisition system for pressurized pipeline system were designed md fabricated to obtain high frequency pressure data. The methodology properly handles the unavoidable uncertainties in measurement and modeling error. Based on information from head pressure test data, it provides leak prediction capability from the transient events with leakage.

  • Extensive researches toward pool boiling characteristics have been widely investigated. However, the correct understanding of its boiling crisis by Critical Heat Flux (CHF) phenomenon during steady and transient heat transfer as a fundamental database for designing heat generation systems is still need to be clarified. The pool boiling CHFs were investigated to clarify the generalized phenomena of transition to film boiling at transient condition. The CHFs were measured on 1.0 mm diameter horizontal cylinder of platinum for exponential heat generation rates with various periods for saturated liquids at atmospheric pressure. The incipience of boiling processes was completely different depending on pre-pressurization. Also, the dependence of pre-pressure in transient CHFs changed due to the wettability of boiling liquids. The trend of typical CHFs were clearly divided into the first, second and third groups for long, short and intermediate periods, respectively. By the effect of pre-pressurization, the boiling incipience mechanism was replaced from that by active cavities entraining vapor to that by the HSN in originally flooded cavies.

  • This paper investigates how to determine the Rayleigh damping coefficients for dynamic time history seismic analysis of piping systems. Three methods are applied. The first one is a conventional method to use the natural frequencies of the mode 1 and 2, derived from dynamic analysis. The second method is to determine the Rayleigh damping coefficients based on frequency range of the acceleration histories. The last one is a iterative transient response analysis method using the transient analysis results without and with damping. It is found that the conventional method and the iterative transient response method yield the same results whereas the acceleration frequency-basis method provides more conservative result than the other methods. In addition, it is concluded that the iterative transient response method is recommended.

  • The cool-down performance after soaking is very important in an automotive air-conditioning system and is considered as a key design variable. Therefore, transient characteristics of each system component are essential to the preliminary design as well as steady-state performance. The objective of this study is to develop a computer simulation model and ostinato theoretically the transient performance of an automotive air-conditioning system. To do that, the mathematical modelling of each component, such as compressor, condenser, receiver/drier, expansion valve, and evaporator, is presented first of all. The basic balance equations about mass and energy are used in modelling. For detailed calculation, condenser and evaporator are divided into many sub-sections. Each sub-section is an elemental volume for modelling. In models of expansion valve and compressor, dynamic behaviors are not considered in this analysis, but the quasisteady state ones are just considered, such as the relation between mass flow rate and pressure drop in expansion device, polytropic process in compressor, etc. Also it is assumed that there are no heat loss and no pressure drop in discharge, liquid, and suction lines. The developed simulation model is validated by comparing with the laboratory test data of an automotive air-conditioning system. The overall time-tracing properties of each component agreed well with those of test data in this case.
