Alternative marine power (AMP) is continuously used in ports and on docks because of regulations on global ship emission reduction. In Korea, the use of AMP is also mandatory under the Special Act on Port Air Quality Improvement, and efforts are under way in connection with various eco-friendly ships, such as electric-propulsion ships. In this study, AC load flow analysis was performed by modeling the situation in which onboard power is supplied through AMP. This analysis made it possible to study the electrical parameters and losses when power was supplied to the ship. In addition, through a transient stability analysis, the high-speed generation transfer limit value for uninterruptible conversion through onboard generators in the event of a system accident was derived. The results obtained when it was applied are presented
The transient characteristics of separately excited d-c motor driven by thyristor d-c chopper is studied in this paper. The armature controlled system is applied. As a result of theoretrical analysis the following conculsions were drawn: (1) For the transient analysis, it is recognized that the state transition analysis is a more general method and powerful tool than the state equation method or signal flow graph method, although it includes iterative matrix calculations. And the system is dealt with a finite width sampled-data system in the state transition analysis. (2) The transient characteristics of the motor angular velocity and its torque to the sampling duration variation are compared with those due to the amplitude variation of d-c chopper voltage as follows. The attenuation rate of the transient characteristics is equal in both cases, but the initial value of the transient characteristics in former case is greater than in latter case. (3) The roots of characteristics equation of the system lie inside the unit circle of the Z-plane. Therefor the system is stable. Further it is found that as the sampling duration is decreased the relative stability is lessened.

In this study, results from an experimental and numerical study of flow distribution in a close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) are presented. The experiments were carried out using a glow measurement system. Flow distribution at the exit of the first monolith in the CCC was measured using a pitot tube under steady and transient flow conditions. Numerical analysis was done using a CF D code at the same test conditions, and the results were compared with the experimental results. Experimental results showed that the uniformity index of exhaust gas velocity decreases as Reynolds number increases. Under the steady flow conditions, flow through each exhaust pipe concentrates on a small region of the monolith. Under the transient flow conditions, flow through each exhaust pipe with the engine firing order interacts with each other to spread the flow over the monolith face. The numerical analysis results support the experimental results, and help explain the flow pattern in the entry region of the CCC.

This paper presents a method to assess total transfer capability(TTC) considering transient stability. TTC is limited not only by the violation of system voltage and thermal limits, but also restricted by transient stability limit, TTC calculation is divided into two processes. The frist step is to calculate TTC without considering the transient stability constraint by using repeated power flow(RPF) method. The second step is to perform transient stability analysis based on TTC calculation in the frist step.

Roll drafting operation causes variations in the linear density of bundles because the bundle flow cannot be controlled completely by roll pairs. Defects occurring in this operation bring about many problems successively in the next processes. In this paper, we attempt to analyze the draft dynamics and the linear density irregularity based on the governing equation of a bundle motion that has been suggested in our previous studies. For analyzing the dynamic characteristics of the roll drafting operation, it is indispensable to investigate a transient state in time domain before the bundle flux reaches a steady state. However, since governing equations of bundle flow consisting of continuity and motion equations turn out to be nonlinear, and coupled between variables, the solutions for a transient state cannot be obtained by an analytical method. Therefore, we use the Finite Difference Method(FDM), particularly, the FTBS(Forward-Time Backward-Space) difference method. Then, the total equations system yields to an algebraic equations system and is solved under given initial and boundary conditions in an iterative fashion. From the simulation results, we confirm that state variables show different behavior in the transient state; e.g., the velocity distribution in the flow field changes more quickly the linear density distribution. During a transient flow in a drafting zone, the output irregularity is influenced differently by the disturbances, e.g., the variation in input bundle thickness, the drafting speed, and the draft ratio.
This paper addresses a numerical method for predicting transient temperature distributions in the wall of a curved pipe subjected to internal laminar thermally-stratified flow. A simple and convenient numerical method of treating the unsteady conjugate heat transfer in non-orthogonal coordinate systems is presented. Numerical calculations are performed for the transient evolution of thermal stratification in two curved pipes, where one has thick wall and the other has so thin wall that its presence can be negligible in the heat transfer analysis. The predicted results show that the thermally stratified flow and transient conjugate heat transfer in a curved pipe with a finite wall thickness can be satisfactorily analyzed by the present numerical method, and that the neglect of wall thickness in the prediction of pipe wall temperature distributions can provide unacceptably distorted results for the cases of pipes with thick wall such as safety related-piping systems of nuclear power plant.

Chemical decontamination of primary systems in a nuclear power plant (NPP) prior to commencing the main decommissioning activities is required to reduce radiation exposure during its process. The entire process is repeated until the desired decontamination factor is obtained. To achieve improved decontamination factors over a shorter time with fewer cycles, the appropriate flow characteristics are required. In addition, to prepare an operating procedure that is adaptable to various conditions and situations, the transient analysis results would be required for operator action and system impact assessment. In this study, the flow characteristics in the steady-state and transient conditions for the chemical decontamination operations of the Kori-1 NPP were analyzed and compared via the MARS-KS code simulation. Loss of residual heat removal (RHR) and steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) simulations were conducted for the postulated abnormal events. Loss of RHR results showed the reactor coolant system (RCS) temperature increase, which can damage the reactor coolant pump (RCP)s by its cavitation. The SGTR results indicated a void formation in the RCS interior by the decrease in pressurizer (PZR) pressure, which can cause surface exposure and tripping of the RCPs unless proper actions are taken before the required pressure limit is achieved.

Exhaust manifolds suffer from serious temperature variation during the thermal fatigue test. The spatial distribution of temperature changes at each moment. Because transient flow can not be simulated during the long period of temperature change, the simulation can not be performed by conjugate heat transfer analysis. In this study, a new procedure for transient thermal analysis is established by decoupling fluid-solid analysis. The procedure consists of (1) transient CFD calculation (2 cycles), (2) mapping heat transfer coefficient to the inner surface of solid mesh as a boundary condition of heat conduction analysis and (3) transient heat conduction analysis in the long period (30 min). The realistic temperature change can be predicted by this procedure.

In this study, pre-postprocessing toolbox is developed to perform elasto-plastic analyze of underground structures with transient ground water flow. This toolbox is composed of three modules. The first is the data input processor for the structural analysis. The preprocessing Is using GUI (Graphic User Interface), which is consist of dialog box, pull down, and short-cut icon, etc. The second is the structural analysis module. The analysis is based on the elasto-plastic finite element method involving additional options such as ground excavation effect, transient ground water flow, and rock bolts behavior. The last is the postprocessing module. The postprocessing is able to verify the result of the structural analysis by the graphical simulation which visualizes the element mesh, the node displacements, the element stress states, the stress contour, the ground water surface, and the rock bolt stresses. Since various options are considered separately in this toolbox, it is easy to modify the module of each processing, and to update other functional modules for the given analysis conditions.

Multi-dimensional coupling analysis is a research hot spot in nuclear reactor thermal hydraulic study and both the full-scale system transient response and local key three-dimensional thermal hydraulic phenomenon could be obtained simultaneously, which can achieve the balance between efficiency and accuracy in the numerical simulation of nuclear reactor. A one-dimensional to three-dimensional (1D-3D) coupling platform for the nuclear reactor multi-dimensional analysis is developed by XJTU-NuTheL (Nuclear Thermal-hydraulic Laboratory at Xi'an Jiaotong University) based on the CFD code Fluent and system code RELAP5 through the Dynamic Link Library (DLL) technology and Fluent user-defined functions (UDF). In this paper, the International Standard Problem (ISP) No. 43 is selected as the benchmark and the rapid boron dilution transient in the nuclear reactor is studied with the coupling code. The code validation is conducted first and the numerical simulation results show good agreement with the experimental data. The three-dimensional flow and temperature fields in the downcomer are analyzed in detail during the transient scenarios. The strong reverse flow is observed beneath the inlet cold leg, causing the de-borated water slug to mainly diffuse in the circumferential direction. The deviations between the experimental data and the transients predicted by the coupling code are also discussed.
