  • Thermal characterization of geomaterials has significant implication on the geothermal energy, disposal of nuclear wastes, geological sequestration of carbon dioxides and recovery of hydrocarbon resources. Heat transfer in multiphase materials is dominated by the thermal conductivity of consisting components, porosity, degree of saturation and overburden pressure, which have been investigated by the empirical correlation at macro-scale. The thermal measurement by Transient Plane Source (TPS) and associated algorithm for interpretation of thermal behavior in geomaterials corroborate the robustness of sensing techniques. The method simultaneously provides thermal conductivity, diffusivity and volumetric heat capacity. The newly introduced thermal network model enables estimating thermal conductivity of geomaterials subjected to the effective stress, which has not been evaluated using previous thermal models. The proposed methods shows the applicability of reliability of TPS technique and thermal network model.

  • Power transmission lines are one of the most important components of electric power system. Failures in the operation of power transmission lines can result in serious power system problems. Hence, fault diagnosis (transient or permanent) in power transmission lines is very important to ensure the reliable operation of the power system. A hidden Markov model (HMM), a powerful pattern recognizer, classifies events in a probabilistic manner based on fault signal waveform and characteristics. This paper presents application of HMM to classify faults in overhead power transmission lines. The algorithm uses voltage samples of one-fourth cycle from the inception of the fault. The simulation performed in EMTPWorks and MATLAB environments validates the fast response of the classifier, which provides fast and accurate protection scheme for power transmission lines.

  • The protection of underground cables against transient overvoltages resulting from lightning and other causes is important in cable-line which is connected with overhead line and underground cable. This paper investigates the failure of SVL(Sheath Voltage Limiter) and presents the application of protection methods for single point bonding on underground transmission cable system. EMTP(Electromagnetic Transient Program) is used in order to study the overvoltages and modeling of components of the system such as, underground cables, SVLs and towers.

  • In an electric substation, there are many sources of surge such as switching operations or lightning strokes. A grounding system submitted to such surge current presents very different behaviour from the observed under low frequency current. Especially, it has been reported that significant overvoltage occurs at the current feed-in point, and this may cause damages to other grounded components in the substation area. This paper describes the basic mechanism of improvement of grouding performance in transient state with auxiliary grounding grids.

  • The locus of a camshaft supported on camshaft bearings has been investigated using transient method. Forces applied to camshaft are composed of two components, one is transfer force between cam and tappet, the other is frictional force. These forces have been calculated using lumped mass model and EHL theory. ADI method has been used for numerical analysis of Reynolds equation, and 4th order Runge-Kutta method has been used for transient journal locus analysis. The effects of various load conditions are presented in the form of journal locus. As the result of analysis, it is found that camshaft bearings exist in the hydrodynamic lubrication condition.

  • The camshaft locus at camshaft beating in a direct acting OHC valve train system has been investigated using the transient method. Forces applied to the camsfiaft are composed of two components, one is the transfer force between the cam and the tappet, the other is the frictional force. These forces have been calculated using the lumped mass model and the elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory. The alternating direction implicit method has been used for the numerical analysis of Reynolds equation, and 4th order Runge-Kutta method has been used for the transient journal locus analysis. The effects of various load conditions are presented in the form of journal locus. As a result of the analysis, it has been found that camshaft bearings were mainly in the hydrodynamic lubrication condition.

  • With rapid development of world economics, electricity demand in metropolitan area has been increased dramatically. HTS(High Temperature Superconducting) cable is one of most promising technology to solve the bottleneck of electric network. However, HTS cable is not considered as matured technology yet to power system planners because of its different characteristics with conventional metal conductors. This paper suggests the comparison results of HTS cable simulation and experiment on steady state operation, also give the simulation results on transient characteristics of HTS cable components. This results could devote not only to discuss the security of HTS cable operation, but also to design power system oriented HTS cable.

  • This paper presents the transient state characteristic and single phase ground fault occurred by deterioration of surge arrester when offshore wind turbine is struck by lightning strike. The wind turbine and submarine cable data are based on the 2.5GW offshore wind farm planned in South Korea Southwest Seashore. During lightning strikes, additional ground fault can lead to damage of the generation components. So, the sensitive analyses are conducted in order to investigate the effects of lightning strike on offshore wind farm.

  • Due to the miniaturization of electrical components and assembles on signal circuits, transient overvoltages caused by switching operation or lightning surges have become more interesting concern to the field of electrical engineering. In this paper, the development of surge protective devices(SPDs) that can protect sensitive signal device on shipboard from overvoltages are described. Two kinds of SPDs are designed and tested by using a combination surge generator which can produce the standard impulse current of 8/20${\mu}s$ 2.1kA according to the IEC 61000-4-5 standard. From the simulation and experimental results, it is confirmed that the proposed SPDs have an enough protection performance with a low insertion loss and a low clamping voltage.

  • This Paper presents the transient analysis of the single-phase line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor. To analyse the starting characteristics, the dynamic equation which is combined electric dynamic equations with mechanical dynamic equation is used. The electric dynamics are derived from the d-q axis voltages of stator and rotor respectively. Especially, symmetrical components transformation is used to consider unbalanced magnetic field which is produced by single-phase input. Non-linear d-q axis inductances according to current amplitude and current phase angle are calculated by Finite Element Method and applied to lumped parameter circuit. The analysis methods are validated by comparing simulated and experimental results.
