In case of Resin Transfer Molding(RTM) process, 'race-track' effects and non-uniform fiber volume fraction may cause undesirable resin flow pattern and thus result in dry spots, which affect the mechanical properties of the finished parts. In this study, a real time RTM control strategy to prevent these unfavorable effects is proposed. The control strategy consists of two 'stages' depending on the extent the resin front has reached. Through numerical simulations and experiments, the validity of the proposed scheme is demonstrated. The results show that the proposed scheme is effective in reducing the void formation during RTM mold filling.
To overcome the disadvantages of conventional excavation technology various trenchless (or excavation free, or no-dig) repair-reinforcement technologies have been developed and tried. But trenchless technologies so far developed have some drawbacks such as high cost and inconvenience of operation. In this study, a repairing-reinforcing process for underground pipes with glass fiber fabric polymer composites using VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) has been developed. The developed process requires shorter operation time and lower cost with smaller and simpler operating equipments than those of the conventional trenchless technologies. For the reliable operation of the developed method, a simple method to apply pressure and vacuum to the reinforcement was devised and flexible mold technology was tried. Also, resin filling and cure status during RTM process were monitored with a commercial dielectrometry cure monitoring system, LACOMCURE. From the investigation, it has been found that the developed repairing-reinforcing technology with appropriate process variables and on-line cure monitoring has many advantages over conventional methods.

In the past, precision optical glass lenses were produced through multiple processes such as grinding and polishing, but mass production of aspheric lenses requiring high accuracy and having complex profile was rather difficult. In such a background, the high-precision optical GMP processes were developed with an eye to mass production of precision optical glass parts by molding press. Generally because the forming stage in a GMP process is operated at high temperature above $570^{\circ}C$, thermal stresses and deformations are generated in the aspheric glass lens mold that is used in GMP process. Thermal stresses and deformations have negative influences on the quality of a glass lens and mold, especially the height of the deformed glass lens will be different from the height of designed glass lens. To prevent the problems of a glass lens mold and the glass lens, it is very important that the thermal stresses and deformations of a glass lens mold at high forming temperature are considered at the glass molds design step. In this study as a fundamental study to develop the molds used in an aspheric glass lens fabrication, a heat transfer and a thermal stress analysis were carried out for the case of one cavity glass lens mold used in progressive GMP process. Finally using analysis results, it was predicted the height of thermally deformed guide ring and calculated the height of the guide ring to be modified, $64.5{\mu}m$. This result was referred to design the glass lens molds for GMP process in production field.
In this study, we analyzed process numerically when a bogie frame skin is manufactured by applying resin transfer molding process using composite material instead of steel. Processing time was compared based on the various thickness of bogie frame skin and the weight variation of a skin was also considered. As a result, RTM processing time decreases and the weight of a bogie reduces as the thickness of frame skin increases with the assumption that fiber volume is constant inside the skin. By considering these results as the information to estimate the production cost, trade-off between two fields, processing time and structural properties, can be performed in design optimization to produce bogie frame.
Resin transfer molding(RTM) as a composite manufacturing process is currently of great interest in the aerospace industry requiring high performance composite parts. In this study, an analysis of mold filling in the RTM process was carried out by numerical simulation using finite element/control volume technique. Experimental work for the visualization of resin flow through fibrous preform was also conducted in order to quantitatively measure the permeabilities of the fiber mats and to evaluate the validity of the developed numerical code. The different types of fiber mats and silicon oils were selected as reinforcements and resin materials, respectively. The effects of fibrous preform structure, mold geometry, and preplaced insert on the flow front patterns during mold filling were examined by integrating the model predictions and experimental results. The flow fronts predicted by numerical simulation were in good agreement with those observed experimentally. However, according to the regions of the mold, some deviations between predicted and observed flow fronts could be found because of non-uniform fiber volume fraction. Weldline locations for the resin flow through round insert preplaced in the mold could be qualitatively deduced based on predicted flow fronts.
Composite materials are substances that are configured to have excellent physical properties by combining the properties of a single substance, and are in the limelight as materials that exceed the performance of metals and polymers. However, it has the disadvantages of long cycle time and high unit price, and much research is being performed to overcome these disadvantages. In this study, we developed an epoxy resin curing agent that can shorten the time required for mass production of composite materials, and tried to expand the applicability of objections by imparting flame retardancy. The epoxy resin used as a basic substance utilized two types of bisphenol F and resorcinol structure, which was further modified using 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenantrene-10-oxide (DOPO) to impart flame retardancy. Triethylphosphate (TEP) and bis [(5-ethyl-2-methyl-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan-5-yl)methyl] methyl phosphonate P,P'-dioxide (FR-001) were used as additives, seven kinds of compositions were blended, thermal characteristics (gelation time, glass transition temperature) and flame retardant performance were evaluated. We successfully developed an epoxy matrix that can be applied to high pressure resin transfer molding (HP-RTM) process.
Resin Transfer Molding FRP (RTM FRP) is a fiber reinforced polymeric plastic which is manufactured by applying pressure to fibers, injecting resin into a mold, and then impregnating it. RTM FRP is a new construction material suitable for producing non-continuum structural elements such as sole plate because it has excellent strength and can produce many members in a short time. In this study, experiments were conducted to estimate the capacity of the bolted connection of RTM FRP. First, a tensile test was conducted to confirm the mechanical properties such as the tensile strength of the RTM FRP to be used for the bolted connection experiments. In addition, experiments were conducted on the bolted connection with the thickness of the RTM FRP and the edge distance of the bolt as variables. In the first experiment, F4.8 bolts were used, and shear failure of the bolt occurred before the RTM FRPs were failed. The F4.8 bolt is a general structural bolts used for the sole plate of a bridge bearing, and it was confirmed that the RTM FRP has a higher bold bearing strength than the shear strength of a F4.8 bolt. In the second experiment, G12.9 bolts were used, and shear failure of the bolt and bearing failure of the RTM FRP occurred simultaneously. In addition, as the thickness of the RTM FRP and the edge length of the bolt increased, the strength of the joint increased. When analogized with the bearing fracture equation of steel plate, the bolted connection of RTM FRP showed a bearing strength coefficient of 0.420 to 0.549 compared to the tensile strength, and it is considered that further research is needed.

Stamps for microcontact processing are fabricated by casting elastomer such as PDMS on a master with a negative of the desired pattern. After curing, the PDMS stamp is peeled away from the master and exposed to a solution of ink and then dried. Transfer of the ink from the PDMS stamp to the substrate occurs during a brief contact between stamp and substrate. Generally, negative-tone masters, which are used for making positive-tone PDMS stamps, are fabricated by using photolithographic technique. The shortcomings of photolithography are a relative high-cost process and require extensive processing time and heavy capital investment to build and maintain the fabrication facilities. The goal of this study is to fabricate a negative-tone master by using Nano-indenter based patterning technique. Various sizes of V-grooves and U-groove were fabricated by using the combination of nanoscratch and HF isotropic etching technique. An achieved negative-tone structure was used as a master in the PDMS replica molding process to fabricate a positive-tone PDMS stamp.

We report a new direct patterning method, called liquid bridge-mediated nanotransfer molding (LB-nTM), for the formation of two- or three-dimensional structures with feature sizes between tens of nanometers and tens of micron over large areas. LB-nTM is based on the direct transfer of various materials from a mold to a substrate via a liquid bridge between them. This procedure can be adopted for automated direct printing machines that generate patterns of functional materials with a wide range of feature sizes on diverse substrates. Arrays of TIPS-PEN TFTs were fabricated on 4" polyethersulfone (PES) substrates by LB-nTM using PDMS molds. An inverted staggered structure was employed in the TFT device fabrication. A 150 nm-thick indium-tin oxide (ITO) gate electrode and a 200 nm-thick SiO2dielectric layer were formed on a PES substrate by sputter deposition. An array of TIPS-PEN patterns (thickness: 60 nm) as active channel layers was fabricated on the substrate by LB-nTM. The nominal channel length of the TIPS-PEN TFT was 10 mm, while the channel width was 135 mm. Finally, the source and drain electrodes of 200 nm-thick Ag were defined on the substrate by LB-nTM. The TIPS-PEN TFTs can endure strenuous bending and are also transparent in the visible range, and therefore potentially useful for flexible and invisible electronics.
