  • Disaster-related extreme weather is rapidly increasing due to climate change. In Korea, typhoons accompanied by rainfall usually approach in August and September, causing great damage. The purpose of this study is to find a gene that regulates the heading date of rice in order to avoid loss of harvest from climate change and typhoons. Cheongcheong/Nagdong doubled haploid (CNDH) was used as the plant material to investigate the location of heading-related genes using QTL and sequence analysis by cloning the gene. In the distribution chart, the heading dates, culm lengths, panicle lengths, numbers of panicles, and 1,000-grain weights all have normal distributions. QTL analysis found 13 contigs on chromosome 8. One QTL, named qHd8, was detected on chromosome 8. The range at qHd8 was approximately 7.7 cM, with RM72 and RM404 markers near the peak. There were 13 contigs and 1 ORF. Protein sequence analysis showed that rice was similar to Os08g0341700, AtSFH13, and AtSFH7 proteins. Os08g0341700, which is involved in signal transduction, is similar to phosphatidylinositol transfer-like protein II, and complete information is not available, but it is believed to play a role in the phosphatidylinositol-specific signaling pathway related to Sec14P.

  • The temporal and spatial distributions of surface solar radiation were calculated by the one layer solar radiative transfer model(GWNU) which was corrected by multi layer Line-by-Line(LBL) model during 2009 in South Korea. The aerosol optical thickness, ozone amount, cloud fraction and total precipitable water were used as the input data for GWNU model run and they were retrieved from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer(MODIS), Ozone Monitoring Instrument(OMI), MTSAT-1R satellite data and the Regional Data Assimilation Prediction System(RDAPS) model result, respectively. The surface solar radiation was calculated with 4 km spatial resolution in South Korea region using the GWNU model and the results were compared with surface measurement(by pyranometer) data of 22 KMA solar sites. The maximum values(more than $5,400MJ/m^2$) of model calculated annual solar radiation were found in Andong, Daegu and Jinju regions and these results were corresponded with the MTSAT-1R cloud amount data. However, the spatial distribution of surface measurement data was comparatively different from the model calculation because of the insufficient correction and management problems for the sites instruments(pyranometer).

  • The aim of this study was to provide basic informations for restoring a habitat of Nannophy pygmaea Rambur. Environments and flora of the habitats were investigated in Youngdong, Sanbuk, and Nongam South Korea. The habitats were abandoned paddy fields with tree-unshaded space and with the water depths of about 2 - 10 cm all the year round. The water quality was recorded 5.44 - 7.33 in pH, 0.017 - 0.480 dS/m in EC, 1.34 - 4.94 mg/L in T-N and 0.06 - 0.46 mg/L in T-P. The pH and EC showed a wide range values, and T-N and T-P showed a high values comparatively. This result implies that a water quality does not important as the condition for a habitat of the species. A total of 86 vascular plant taxa belonging to 35 families, 60 genera, 67 species, 2 subspecies, 14 varieties and 3 forma were recognized in the habitats. Twenty two species (25.6%) overlapped among the habitats; Equisetum arvense, Salix koreensis, Persicaria thunbergii, Stellaria alsine var. undulata, Hypericum laxum, Kummerowia striata, Epilobium pyrricholophum, Oenanthe javanica, Mosla dianthera, Utricularia vulgaris var. japonica, Plantago asiatica, Eupatorium lindleyanum, Juncus diastrophanthus, J. effusus var. decipiens, J. papillosus, Aneilema keisak, Alopecurus aequalis, Arthraxon hispidus, Carex dickinsii, Cyperus sanguinolentus, Eleocharis acicularis for. longiseta and E. congesta. Biological type was determined to be HH-R5-D4-e(t) type; HH 39 taxa (45.3%), R5 42 taxa (48.8%), D4 59 taxa (68.6%) and e (or t) 23 taxa (26.7%).

  • Ecoclimap-1, a new complete surface parameter global database at a 1-km resolution, was previously presented. It is intended to be used to initialize the soil-vegetation- atmosphere transfer schemes in meteorological and climate models. Surface parameters in the Ecoclimap-1 database are provided in the form of a per-class value by an ecoclimatic base map from a simple merging of land cover and climate maps. The principal objective of this ecoclimatic map is to consider intra-class variability of life cycle that the usual land cover map cannot describe. Although the ecoclimatic map considering land cover and climate is used, the intra-class variability was still too high inside some classes. In this study, a new strategy is defined; the idea is to use the information contained in S10 NDVI SPOT/VEGETATION profiles to split a land cover into more homogeneous sub-classes. This utilizes an intra-class unsupervised sub-clustering methodology instead of simple merging. This study was performed to provide a new ecolimatic map over Northeast Asia in the framework of Ecoclimap-2 global database construction for surface parameters. We used the University of Maryland's 1km Global Land Cover Database (UMD) and a climate map to determine the initial number of clusters for intra-class sub-clustering. An unsupervised classification process using six years of NDVI profiles allows the discrimination of different behavior for each land cover class. We checked the spatial coherence of the classes and, if necessary, carried out an aggregation step of the clusters having a similar NDVI time series profile. From the mapping system, 29 ecosystems resulted for the study area. In terms of climate-related studies, this new ecosystem map may be useful as a base map to construct an Ecoclimap-2 database and to improve the surface climatology quality in the climate model.

  • Globally, the frequency and intensity of abnormal climate events are increasing. Since this can directly damage lives and property, it is important to establish and implement an appropriate maintenance strategy in response to abnormal weather. Facilities built in cold regions where cold wave or heavy snow occurs frequently can be more damaged by freeze-thaw than facilities located in other regions. However, there are no clear criteria for quantitatively identifying the damage of freeze-thaw and how to cope with it. Therefore, based on the results of indoor freezing tests, the freezing conditions considering regional climate characteristics were selected as one day at -14℃, two days at -7℃ or three days at -5℃. As a result, it was confirmed that they were in the freeze-thaw environment in order of Daegwallyeing (8.3 times), Cheorwon (5.3 times) and Taebeak (4.9 times) in Gangwon region. Through this study, the evaluation criteria of freeze-thaw of road tunnels were newly proposed. The freeze-thaw evaluation criteria of the road tunnel presented in this study can be used for the quantitative evaluation and maintenance strategy of tunnels in cold regions.

  • The concept of integrated pest management (IPM) first developed in the 1950s, and the concept of economic control via pest management was established in the 1960s. Research on IPM began in the United States and Europe, and IPM studies in Korea started with citrus insects and paddy field pests following the distribution of high-yield varieties of rice. Apple IPM in Korea began with research on pest control using chemical pesticides and pesticides resistant to insect pests, studies on the ecology of insect pests and their natural enemies, and the exploitation of sex pheromones on insect pests. Since the 1990s, IPM research and field projects have been carried out simultaneously for farming households. In the 2000s, the development of pest monitoring and forecasting models centered on mating disturbances, database programs for pests, and networks for sharing information. IPM technology has expanded via the development of unmanned forecasting systems and automation technologies in the 2010s.

  • The climate change caused by global warming may affect on the hydro-meteorologic factor such as evaporation (IPCC, 2001). Furthermore, it is also necessary that the effect of climate change according to geographical condition on evaporation should be studied. In this study, considering geographical and topographical conditions, the 6 evaporation equations that have been applied to simulate annual and monthly pan evaporation were compared. 56 climatologic stations were selected and classified, basing on the geographical and topographical characteristics (urbanization, topographical slope, proximity to coast, and area of water body). The evaporation equations currently being used are applied. These evaporation equations are Penman, Kohler-Nordenson-Fox (KNF), DeBruin-Keijman, Priestley-Taylor, Hargreaves, and Rohwer. Furthermore, Penman equation was modified by calibrating the parameters of wind function and was verified using relative error. The study results indicate that the KNF equation compared best with the pan: relative error was 8.72%. Penman equation provided the next-best values for evaporation relative to the pan: relative error was 8.75%. The mass-transfer method (Rohwer) provided the worst comparison showing relative error of 33.47%. In case that there is a close correlation between wind function and wind speed, modified Penman equation provided a better estimate of pan evaporation.

  • In this letter, we simulated an atmospheric correction for Sentinel-2 images, of which spectral bands are similar to Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4 (CAS500-4). Using the second simulation of the satellite signal in the solar spectrum - vector (6SV)2.1 radiation transfer model and random forest (RF), a type of machine learning, we developed an RF-based atmospheric correction model to simulate 6SV2.1. As a result, the similarity between the reflectance calculated by 6SV2.1 and the reflectance predicted by the RF model was very high.
