In the major operation sections of the urban railway, there has been habitual delay, and delay propagation; another problem is the increase of crowds and of inconvenience to passengers. The urban railway has different characteristics from rural railways, such as uncertainty of demand and irregularity of train operation. In urban railways, recently, operators manage quality indicators of service using operation results, such as the delay of train operation and the congestion of trains. However, because the urban railway has characteristics in which demand, passenger behavior, and train operation mutually affect each other, it is difficult to express the quality of service that passengers actually feel. In this paper, we suggest a quality indicator of service from the viewpoint of passengers, and present a demand responsive multi-train simulation method to predict dynamic dwell time and train operation status; we also use simulation results to consider changes in the quality indicator of service.
Number of subway train units that Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation as at September 2005 is 1.944 on 4 routes from 60 units at the time of commencement of operation, having grown exponentially. Along with increase in the number of passengers the role of subway as safer and expedient means of transportation is now being required. Furthermore, the Corporation has been researching on means of improving the safety and reliability of subway entry/exit doors which has become an essential task and directly effect the safety of the passengers. In this Study, has developed sensory control system for the entry/exit door of the subway train using non-contact proximity sensor as a part of review of and measures against various issues of entry/exit door of the subway trains currently under operation. In addition, this sensor system was verified through test production and tests. If this technology becomes commercialized and practically utilized in the future, it would be able to make definite contribution to the safer transportation of passengers.

As the standard of living is higher, the passengers using public transportations desire better qualities of environment as well as more comfortable indoor environment. In case of train, the passengers' comfort in passenger cabin is one of the most important elements to be competitive with other transport systems. The indoor air quality of the cabin should be managed properly, because many passengers travel for a long time in the small space of $144\;m^3$. For proper management of the air quality, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is required for the ventilation of the compartment. To maintain comfortable environment in the compartment, the automatic ventilation system is needed to exchange the indoor air with fresh air or clean indoor air. In this study, we investigated the indoor air quality (PM-10, $CO_2$, and VOCs) in the compartment of train. In addition, type and pattern of PM-10 has been analyzed through the clustering analysis. Based on the analysis, we could found that the fine particulate matters in the compartment can be a serious hazard to human. To control the concentration of PM-10 and $CO_2$ air cleaners were developed. Through this study, it is expected that people who take a train will be in a more comfortable environment.

In general, increasing train dwell time leads to increasing train service frequency, and it in turn contributes to increasing the congestion level of train and platform. Therefore, the studies on train dwell time have received growing attention in the perspective of scheduling train operation. This study develops a prediction model of train dwell time to enable train operators to mitigate platform congestion by metering passenger inflow at platform gate with respect to platform congestion levels in real-time. To estimate the prediction model, three types of independent variables were applied: number of passengers to get into train, number of passengers to get out of trains, and train weights, which are collectable in real-time. The explanatory power of the estimated model was 0.809, and all of the dependent variables were statistically significant at the 99%. As a result, this model can be available for the basis of on-time train service through platform gate metering, which is a strategy to manage passenger inflow at the platform.
Abstract Tilting train has been developed to increase the oprational speed of the trains on conventional lines which have many curves. This train are tilted at curves to compensate for unbalanced carbody centrifugal acceleration to a greater extent than compensation produced by the track cant, so that passengers do not feel centrifugal acceleration and thus trains can run at higher speed at curves. This paper developed PDM(product data management) to make a system engineering of TTX(Tilting Train eXpress) with maximum operation speed 180 km/h.

Based on an observation that tag-out times of passengers from Smart Card data were clustered, Hong et al.[1] recently developed a precise algorithm that detects a logical path for metro passengers. The logical path means the sequence of train boarding and alighting. In this paper, we observe that tag-out times of passengers in Seoul Metro Line 9 were also clustered; we trace an actual logical path of passengers by applying the algorithm. As a result, we identify 91% of passengers successfully and find their logical paths; we also investigate passengers'preferences between express and local trains.
Unlike high-speed KTX trains and dual track railways, most single-track railways are not popular among passengers because of long travel hours. As a solution to the problem, tilting trains will be deployed along the conventional line. Tilting train has a mechanism that enables increased speed on regular and curved railway tracks. As a train rounds a curve at speed, objects inside the train experience centrifugal force. This can cause packages to slide about or seated passengers to feel squashed by the outboard armrest due to its centripetal force, and standing passengers to lose their balance. Tilting trains possess a top speed of up to 180 km per hour as opposed to the previous 140 km per hour, so allow the train to pass curve at higher speed without affecting passenger comfort. This paper describes the methodology study to estimate the benefits, especially on the extra benefits in case of tilting actuation.

While the number of passengers using urban railroads is increasing day by day, the number of complaints from passengers is also increasing. In order to resolve problems caused by poor communication between urban railroad officials and passengers in this paper. An IOS application using the Internet of Things (IoT) technology is proposed for providing safety and comfort temperature service(s) and for taking prompt action(s) of passengers complaints. In this proposal system, the temperature & humidity sensors were placed in a suitable location within the train. At the same time, transferring measurements to the remote server, allowing passengers to request their desired temperature through the IOS Application. Like this based on the collected data, I suggest a system that urban railroad officials can control temperature & humidity of the train. The proposed system was implemented by the Gwangju Metro Line 1 to validate its effectiveness.
The South Korean rail authority is constructing a nationwide tourism belt by developing new rail tour routes in an effort to combine local tourism resources with rail service and to create value in regional areas. As massive financial resources are required to develop and operate such tourist trains, governing authorities are required to examine the feasibility of this project as a sound business model and to assess the public benefit and profitability of the project. In this study, the economic feasibility of the tourist trains was assessed with the contingent valuation method (CVM). According to an estimation of the willingness to pay of potential tour train passengers, the surveyed subjects were willing to pay fares that were higher than prices currently published at the time of this study, thereby demonstrating that the economic value they invest on tourist trains may be higher than published prices at the time. For instance, they were willing to pay 28.4% and 54.9% more for the O-train and V-train types, respectively, according to the study, suggesting that the quality as perceived by train passengers for tourist train services is relatively high. The study is significant in that it succeeded in quantifying the satisfaction level of tourist train passengers using quantitative data (additional funds people are willing to pay).
