  • Air pollution and traffic noise from roads distributed near residential area has been a major social problem. In this study, an environmental pollution map for a residential area of Shihung-city was made by an expectation model based on hourly traffic volume change. Using the result from the model, a plan to reduce population in the residential area was established. The result of the modelling is summarized as follows: 1. At peak traffic hours (18 o'clock), 301-500 degree in hazardous and $d_{25}$ degree (25% of the residents are suffering extremely from the noise) in noise pollution were predicted in Jeongwang Main Road in Shihung city. 2. The calculated critical pollutant standard index, PSI showed the air pollution level, especially PM-10 high enough to require re-entrainment. 3. It was expected air pollution would extensively extend over the area distribution of each degree. However, noise pollution problem was limited to the area near roads.

  • The objective of study is to evaluate highway capaicty estimation alternative and to develop capacity from statistical distribution of observed traffic flow. Speed-Volume relation is analyzed from vehicle's headway distribution eliminating the long headway by confidence intervals 99%, 95%, 90%. Capacity estimate alternatives were evaluated from 95% , 90%, 85% level of cummulative distribution of observed hourly traffic flow adjusted to confidence intervals. The result of investigation revealed that maximum hourly rate of flow is 2, 130pcu at confidence interval of 995, 2, 233pcu at 95%, 2, 315pcu at 90% respectively. Compared to the capacity of 2, 200pcu per hour per lane used in HCM and KHCM(Korea Highway Capacity Manual), capa챠y appears to correspond to confidence interval of 95%. Using the traffic flow rate at confidence interval of 95% the maximum hourly flow rate is 2, 187pcu at 95% of cummulative volume distribution, 2, 153pcu at 90%, 2, 215pcu at 85%. The study suggests that raional capacity esimation alternative is to take the 95% of cummulative distribution of observed hourly traffic flow at 95% confidence headway interval eliminating 5% long headway.(i.e. 95-95 rule)

  • This paper is described the concepts and limitations for the traditional directional design hour volume estimation. The main objective of this paper is to establish an estimation method of probabilistic directional design hour volume in order to improve the limitation for the traditional approach method. To express the traffic congestion of specific road segment, this paper proposed the link travel time as the probability that the road capacity can accommodate a certain traffic demand at desired service level. Also, the link travel time threshold was derived from chance-constrained stochastic model. Such successive probabilistic process could determine optimal ranked design hour volume and directional design hour volume. Therefore, the probabilistic directional design hour volume can consider the traffic congestion and economic aspect in road planning and design stage. It is hoped that this study will provide a better understanding of various issues involved in the short term prediction of directional design hourly volume on different types of roads.

  • Residential streets play an important role not only as a Place for moving but also as a place for social interactions among urban residents. Social interactions among urban residents are critical factor to draw sense of confidence and communality, and community spirit from the residents. Social interactions among community residents, however, are getting restricted severely by automobile traffic in the residential area. This study shows that the level of social interactions among the residents decreases substantially as traffic volume increases in the area. Other daily activities such as relaxing. playing with children, exercising, and doing small works in the street which can caused social interactions among the residents are also decreased as the volume of automobile traffic increases. Residents living in the area of heavier traffic volume perceive more strongly that automobile traffic is the major reason which deters them from interacting socially each other.

  • This study was reviewed the noise reduction effects with installation of 'point to point speed camera' for controlling the speed of the car. The multiple regression analysis was performed to know how the relationship between the noise level and these parameters, such as measured traffic volume and rate of heavy vehicle and weighted average speed was changed with and without the 'point to point speed camera'. In the analysis results shows that the less traffic volume, the more noise reduction effect has been increased and the more traffic volume, the more noise reduction effect has been reduced. And noise reduction effects by the 'point to point speed camera' was different from each measured point. The cause of the difference was determined that inadequate 'point to point speed camera' position to see the effect of noise reduction. It is determined to require a more study to improve the noise reduction effects of the 'point to point speed camera' such as the camera position adjustment.

  • Jinhae Bay located in the southern of Korean Peninsular is an important spawning area in Korea. By some preliminary studies it was measured several times that adult Pacific codes (Gadus microcephalus) were passed (swimming layer: 15 to 18 m) over a submerged sea tunnel (sea bottom: about 30 m) rather than another immigration route when the Pacific codes were tagged surgically with an acoustic transmitters and released inside of the Bay. There is a possibility that the Pacific codes and the other fishes use the route on the sea tunnel as an immigration route are affected by a human-generated underwater noise around the sea tunnel due to the sea tunnel traffic. On this study the 25-hour measurements of the underwater noise level by water layer were conducted with a hydrophone attached on a portable CTD and an underwater noise level meter during four seasons, and the acoustical characteristics of the underwater noise was analyzed. The mean traffic volume for one hour at the sea tunnel on the spring was shown the largest value of 1,408 [standard deviation (SD): 855] vehicles among four seasons measurement. The next one was ordered on the autumn [1,145 (SD: 764)], winter [947 (SD: 598)] and summer [931 (SD: 558)] vehicles. Small size vehicle was formed 84.3% of the traffic volume, and ultra-small size, medium size, large size and extra-large size of the vehicle were taken possession of 8.7%, 3.2%, 2.0% and 1.8%, respectively. On the daily change of the noise level in vertical during four seasons the noise level of 5 m-layer was shown the highest value of 121.2 (SD: 3.6) dB (re $1{\mu}Pa$), the next one was 10 m-layer [120.7 (SD: 3.5)], 2 m- and 15 m-layer [120.3 (SD: 3.5 to 3.7)] and 1 m-layer [119.2 (SD: 3.6)] dB (re $1{\mu}Pa$). In relation with the seasonal change of the noise level the average noise level measured during autumn was shown the highest value of 123.9 (SD: 2.6) dB (re $1{\mu}Pa$), the next was during summer [121.4 (SD: 3.2)], spring [118.0 (SD: 3.4)] and winter [116.5 (SD: 5.1)] dB (re $1{\mu}Pa$). In results of eigenray computation when the real bathymetry data (complicate shape of sea bed) was applied the average number of eigenray was 2.68 times (eigenrays: 11.03 rays) higher than those of model bathymetry (flat and slightly sloped sea bottom). When the real bathymetric data toward inside (water depth becomes shallow according to a distance between the source of noise and hydrophone) of the Bay was applied on the eigenrays calculation the number of the eigenray was 1.31 times (eigenrays: 12.49 rays) larger than the real bathymetric data toward outside (water depth becomes deep with respect to the distance). But when the model bathymetric data toward inside of the Bay was applied the number of the eigenray was 1.05 times (eigenrays: 4.21 rays) larger than the model bathymetric data toward outside.

  • In this study, we estimated the effect of the traffic noise in urban area using the LiDAR data. The propagation of noise has a strong relationship between distance and shape of surface. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the distribution of buildings for estimating noise assessment in urban area because noise propagations will be affected by buildings. For this, we were developed DEM and DBM using the LiDAR data in order to analyze the propagation of traffic noise precisely in urban area. The level of traffic noise were calculated by investigating the real volume of traffic in study area. The SoundPLAN S/W and RLS90 algorithm was used for traffic noise assessment.

  • The noise problem became more serious by the rapid urban population growth and traffic. This study estimates the noise level considering actual traffic volume and building shape and location. Based on the state of the arts noise level, changing amount of noise that was controlled by the speed control and truck and passenger car restriction is calculated. Some conclusion is found out. The 2-D type more than 3-D type is more than over standard of noise pollution and night time's over rate is larger than day time. And in the case of various solutions are used instead of applying one solution, noise pollution is effectively reduced.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology to estimate level of service of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes. METHODS : On 6 Exclusive Median Bus Lanes routes in Seoul, bus travel time and number of bus-stop per km were investigated. Also whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop was checked. Based on the data from sites, bus travel time was estimated according to length of segment, number of bus-stop per km and whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop. RESULTS : A bus travel time table was developed according to length of segment, number of bus-stop per km and whether or not passing lane exists at bus-stop. After bus travel speed and passenger car travel speed is estimated based on each travel time table and length of segment, two speeds are combined with weighted average speed using traffic volume of each lane group. Then weighted average speed is a measure of effectiveness of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes. CONCLUSIONS : It can be concluded that the proposed methodology can estimate level of service of arterial including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes considering the operation characteristics of Exclusive Median Bus Lanes.
