  • PURPOSES : Traffic cameras have been installed to reduce traffic accidents. The effectiveness of traffic cameras has been proved by dozens of studies, but recently questions over its effectiveness have been raised by a series of studies. In this study, the effectiveness of traffic cameras was analyzed with a focus on different road environments. METHODS : The effectiveness of the traffic cameras was analyzed by extracting the occurence frequency before and after camera installation. The effect of reduction was analyzed comprehensively considering the installation position, monitoring direction, and surrounding environment of traffic cameras. RESULTS : The result of this study is as follows. First, the installation of cameras in an area with relatively low accidental traffic was more effective. Secondly, the effect of camera installation on car-to-pedestrian collisions was better than that of car-to-car collisions. Thirdly, accidents tended to occur more frequently when cameras were installed in front of the accident-prone owing to the negative spill-over effect. CONCLUSIONS : The result can be used to guide placement of traffic cameras. Moreover, the installation of cameras with consideration of the road environment is expected to contribute to a reduction in traffic fatalities.

신호교차로에서 무인교통단속 규제에 따른 주행 특성 (Driving Behavior Characteristics under Red Right Camera Enforcement at Signalized Intersections)

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study was to analyze variations in the vehicle driving behavior characteristics on signalized intersections according to the use of traffic enforcement camera (red light camera). METHODS : In order to analyze the driving behavior characteristics on signalized intersections when red light camera are installed, the target sites for investigation were selected depending on whether the red light camera is installed and accident rates increased after the installation. In particular, to analyze the characteristics of dilemma zones in signalized intersections, approach speed and deceleration speed of 3 type vehicles (passing vehicles during a yellow light, stopping at a yellow light, passing vehicles during a green light) were examined. Based on these data, the starting point, ending point, and distance of the dilemma zones were calculated. Also, the locations of increased traffic accidents and decreased accidents after the installation of the equipment were distinguished when analyzing the traffic accident characteristics. RESULTS : Analysis results revealed that there was a tendency for the dilemma zone distance to decrease after the installation of equipment(red light camera) in most sites. This tendency was found to be due to the decrease in the approaching speed of vehicles at intersections after the installation of equipment, resulting in the starting and ending points of dilemma zone to become closer to the stop line. Moreover, analysis showed that the number of traffic accidents decreased for most intersections after the installation of equipment and safety of the intersections increased somewhat. CONCLUSIONS : In general, installation of equipment(red light camera) caused the intersections approaching speed and dilemma zone distance to decrease. Decision-making is difficult for drivers in the dilemma zone, so the decrease in the dilemma zone distance implies an improvement in traffic safety. Furthermore, the number of accidents within intersections significantly decreased after the equipment was installed, leading to the conclusion that installation of the equipment affected the decrease in traffic accidents.

Development of Analysis Module for Marine Traffic Information Using PC Camera

  • Usually marine traffic survey has been conducted by some methods like an ocular observation using portable RADAR, a questionnaire, etc. But these should have expended a lot of manpower and expenses. In this paper, we have developed new observation module which could capture the RADAR image using PC camera simply, and allowed as to track targets on the PC monitor directly. And it has been programmed to make a database of RADAR image, target's track and information, and analyze the marine traffic tendency in various ways like vessel number crossed over gate line, vessel's velocity distribution in gate line, traffic density distribution, etc. We have confirmed that this module could observe and analyze the marine traffic efficiently and economically through several on-the-spot experiments.

머신비젼 기반의 자율주행 차량을 위한 카메라 교정 (Camera Calibration for Machine Vision Based Autonomous Vehicles)

  • Machine vision systems are usually used to identify traffic lanes and then determine the steering angle of an autonomous vehicle in real time. The steering angle is calculated using a geometric model of various parameters including the orientation, position, and hardware specification of a camera in the machine vision system. To find the accurate values of the parameters, camera calibration is required. This paper presents a new camera-calibration algorithm using known traffic lane features, line thickness and lane width. The camera parameters considered are divided into two groups: Group I (the camera orientation, the uncertainty image scale factor, and the focal length) and Group II(the camera position). First, six control points are extracted from an image of two traffic lines and then eight nonlinear equations are generated based on the points. The least square method is used to find the estimates for the Group I parameters. Finally, values of the Group II parameters are determined using point correspondences between the image and its corresponding real world. Experimental results prove the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

영상처리를 이용한 야간 교통신호 제어시스템 (Control System of Traffic Signal by Image Processing at Night)

  • 최근 국민소득 증가로 개인 보유차량이 급격하게 증가하였다. 한정된 국토 내에서 급격한 차량 증가는 심각한 교통 혼잡을 야기 시켰고, 이러한 교통 혼잡으로 인해 도로 위에서 낭비되는 교통혼잡 비용은 매년 증가하는 추세이다. 이러한 문제를 해결하고자 영상처리를 이용한 교통신호 제어시스템을 제안하였다. 본 논문에서는 교차로에 설치된 카메라를 이용하여 각 도로로 유입 유출되는 교통량을 동시에 측정하여 심각한 교통 정체가 일어나기 전에 이를 미연에 방지 할 수 있는 교통신호 제어시스템을 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안한 교통신호 제어시스템을 주간에 적용한 경우는 교통량을 정확하게 측정 할 수 있었으나, 야간 일반 카메라로 측정한 결과 72.8%, 야간에 적외선 카메라로 헤드 라이트를 고려해 실험한 결과 86.6%의 향상된 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • This study was reviewed the noise reduction effects with installation of 'point to point speed camera' for controlling the speed of the car. The multiple regression analysis was performed to know how the relationship between the noise level and these parameters, such as measured traffic volume and rate of heavy vehicle and weighted average speed was changed with and without the 'point to point speed camera'. In the analysis results shows that the less traffic volume, the more noise reduction effect has been increased and the more traffic volume, the more noise reduction effect has been reduced. And noise reduction effects by the 'point to point speed camera' was different from each measured point. The cause of the difference was determined that inadequate 'point to point speed camera' position to see the effect of noise reduction. It is determined to require a more study to improve the noise reduction effects of the 'point to point speed camera' such as the camera position adjustment.

  • Image detection system for road traffic data analysis is a real time detection system using image processing techniques to get the real-time traffic information which is used for traffic control and analysis. One of the most important functions in this system is to match the coordinates of real world and that of image on video camera. When there in no way to know the exact position of camera and it´s height from the object. If some points on the road of real world are known it is possible to calculate the coordinates of real world from image.

A Novel Least Square and Image Rotation based Method for Solving the Inclination Problem of License Plate in Its Camera Captured Image

  • Recognizing license plate from its traffic camera captured images is one of the most important aspects in many traffic management systems. Despite many sophisticated license plate recognition related algorithms available online, license plate recognition is still a hot research issue because license plates in each country all round the world lack of uniform format and their camera captured images are often affected by multiple adverse factors, such as low resolution, poor illumination effects, installation problem etc. A novel method is proposed in this paper to solve the inclination problem of license plates in their camera captured images through four parts: Firstly, special edge pixels of license plate are chosen to represent main information of license plates. Secondly, least square methods are used to compute the inclined angle of license plates. Then, coordinate rotation methods are used to rotate the license plate. At last, bilinear interpolation methods are used to improve the performance of license plate rotation. Several experimental results demonstrated that our proposed method can solve the inclination problem about license plate in visual aspect and can improve the recognition rate when used as the image preprocessing method.

교통정보 수집 및 감시 동시운영을 위한 CCTV 카메라 자율자세 보정 알고리즘 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development of CCTV Camera Autonomous Posture Calibration Algorithm for Simultaneous Operation of Traffic Information Collection and Monitoring)

  • 본 논문은 교통상태 감시 등 교통관제를 위해 설정한 CCTV 카메라의 화각 상태에서 교통량, 속도 등 교통정보 수집을 동시에 수행할 수 있는 CCTV 카메라 자세보정 알고리즘 개발에 관한 것이다. 개발한 자율자세보정 알고리즘은 차량인식 및 추적기법을 이용하여 도로를 식별하고, 운영자의 교통감시 및 교통정보 수집을 위한 화각을 결정한다. 제안 알고리즘의 성능검증은 현장에 설치한 CCTV를 이용하였으며, 교통감시 및 교통정보 수집을 위해 각각 설정한 화각에 대해 자율자세보정 알고리즘이 자동 산출한 화각의 결과와 비교하였다. 분석결과 운영자 감시를 위한 화각은 상호 96%의 일치성을 보였다. 교통정보의 경우는 교통량 및 속도의 정확도가 각각 96%, 95%로 산출됐으며 수동 설정한 화각과 비교할 때 약 2%의 오차가 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 결과적으로 제안 알고리즘을 통해 관제용 CCTV를 이용하여 교통정보 수집 및 교통상황 감시를 동시에 수행할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
