  • Objectives: This study was performed to review the use of statistical analysis methods for the Traditional Korean Medicine studies listed on the Korea Citation Index from 1999 to 2008. Methods: A total of 4217 studies published on four journals of Traditional Korean Medicine were screened and 2682 articles using statistical methods were selected for the review. The selected studies were analysed according to their published year, statistical method and statistical package for use. Results: Statistical methods were used steadily in 64.6% of the articles after 2001, the most used statistical methods(57%) were mean difference comparison between 2 groups. The number of statistical methods mostly used in one article was identified as one in 1931 articles (72.0%). Duncan (36.8%) and Tukey (26.5%) were used for the ANOVA post hoc analysis. SPSS was most frequently used 68% out of Statistical package programs.(the number of mean difference comparison among more than 3 groups was continuously increasing and that makes post hoc being used. skills of statistical methods need to be diversified.) Conclusion: The interest on the proper use of statistical analysis in the research is increasing. This study will contribute to the Evidence-based Teaching on research methodology in Traditional Korean Medicine.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze whether spreadsheet-used instruction can improve statistical thinking ability and attitude and also to identify what characteristics of statistical thinking is constructed. For this study, a subject of 2 classes were randomly selected among the 12 classes of the 11th grader in D high school and designated one class as the experimental group and the other class as the control group. Eight hours of the spread sheet-used instruction and the traditional textbook-oriented instruction had been carried out in each class. The research findings are as follows. First, the spread sheet-used instruction is shown to be more effective in enhancing statistical thinking than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction. Second, the spread sheet-used instruction is shown to be more effective in improving statistical attitude than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction. Third, students have shown the various characteristics of statistical thinking in the data descriptive process, data arrange-summary process, data representing process, and data analying process through the spread sheet-used instructions. Hence, the spread sheet-used instruction is recommended in teaching statistics.

  • Due to boundedness and sum constraint, compositional data are often transformed by logratio transformation and their transformed data are put into traditional binary classification or discriminant analysis. However, it may be problematic to directly apply traditional multivariate approaches to the transformed data because class distributions are not Gaussian and Bayes decision boundary are not polynomial on the transformed space. In this study, we propose to use flexible classification approaches to transformed data for compositional data classification. Empirical studies using synthetic and real examples demonstrate that flexible approaches outperform traditional multivariate classification or discriminant analysis.

  • Traditional procedures for DNA microarray data analysis are to preprocess and normalize the gene expression data, and then to analyze the normalized data using statistical tests. Drawbacks of the traditional methods are: genuine biological signal may be unwillingly eliminated together with artifacts, the limited number of arrays per gene make statistical tests difficult to use the normality assumption or nonparametric method, and genes are tested independently without consideration of interrelationships among genes. A novel method using average rank in each array is proposed to eliminate such drawbacks. This average rank method monitors differentially regulated genes among genetically different groups and the selected genes are somewhat different from those selected by traditional P-value method. Addition of genes selected by the average rank method to the traditional method will provide better understanding of genetic differences of groups.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a measure of service quality in the traditional market by examining previous research on the service quality of the traditional market studied so far. After defining basic concepts through definition of traditional market and existing studies, 5 categories of configuration items for SERVQUAL measurement in traditional market were made up based on existing researches related to definition of service quality and service quality of traditional market. A survey was conducted on the items that fit the intention of this study and various statistical analyzes were conducted. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 22.0. The reliability of the items was measured by the reliability test, and the predictability and accuracy of the items were examined. The validity of the measured variables was verified through confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability, empathy, responsiveness, certainty, and tangibility were the most important factors in this study. Responsiveness factors include communication, time reduction, real time, promptness. Assurance factors include the assurance of delivery, prompt answers, product knowledge items. Tangibility factors include, convenient device systems, location information, presence as a fact, and as a result, the latest modern items are adopted. The quality of service in the traditional market developed in this study was found to be good in reliability and validity test. Confirmatory factor analysis result using structural equation model also met the conformity index standard. If service satisfaction is measured based on this research, basic data can be presented to policy makers who implement policies on traditional markets to make the right decisions. In addition, it will be able to provide traditional market operators with operational strategy and marketing data. In the future, based on the traditional market service quality scale developed in this study, it is necessary to grasp the factors to be continuously managed to improve the service quality of the traditional market, user satisfaction, and intention to use.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of group music therapy using the traditional drum on the; social adjustment, self-image, and emotional adjustment, of children with hearing impairment. I participated in this group music therapy using the traditional drum with 7 children with hearing impairment for 3 days a week for 6 weeks(including holidays), and each session was 50 minutes long. The evaluation form of this study is a social-emotional development measurement sheet of Meadow-Kendall, which the children's teacher distributed to the children both pre- and post-examination. With these results, the researcher carried out Window SPSS 19 Version and searched for the experiment's effect of measurement cause (I am not sure what this means.) through paired t-test to identify the experiment's effects (social adjustment, self-image, emotional adjustment) as a result of group music therapy using the traditional drum for children with hearing impairment. This study arrived at the following conclusions. First, after I participated in the group music therapy using the traditional drum, the result of the comparisons of the pre-to-post average for social adjustment showed the statistical significance level of the 0.01 standard. Therefore, it was found that the group music therapy using the traditional drum had a positive effect on the social adjustment of children with hearing Impairment. Second, after I participated in the group music therapy using the traditional drum, the result of the comparisons of the pre-to-post average for self-image development showed the statistical significance level of the 0.01 standard. Therefore, the group music therapy using the traditional drum had a positive effect on the self-image of children with hearing impairment. Third, after I participated in the group music therapy using the traditional drum, the result of the comparisons of the pre-to-post average for emotional adjustment showed the statistical significance level of the 0.01 standard. Therefore, the group music therapy using the traditional drum had a positive effect on the emotional adjustment of children with hearing impairment.

  • The purpose of the study w3s to investigate the consumption pattern of the Korean traditional foods of the elementary schoolchildren living in urban and rural area. For the investigation, 373 fifth-grade elementary schoolchildren in Incheon and Gangwhado were surveyed by a questionnaire and the data were analyzed by the SPSS 10.0 program. As for the frequency to take the Korean traditional foods, bab and kimchi are taken almost everyday, and gug, jjigae, jorim, gui, namul are taken frequently. And juk, jeongol, jeon, sanjeog, jutgal, hangwa and umryo were shown to be taken occasionally. There were statistical differences in the frequencies of the Korean traditional food consumption by the residence and the gender. The students in urban area take hinbab, jabgokbab, hobakjuk deonjanggug, sangsunjorim, jangiorim more frequently than the students in rural area. The students in rural area take mandu, kuksoo, yeongunjorim and kongiorim more frequently than the students in urban area Female students take sangsunjorim, jangiorim, sangsungui, bulgogi, sangsunjeon, hobakjeon, sukchae, jutgal and oiji more frequently than male students. Most of the schoolchildren answered that in the future they would like to take the traditional foods more frequently than now. There was statistical difference by the gender. As for the food such as bibimbab, gug, jjigae, jeon, namul and jang-aji, female students responded to take more frequently than male students. The 39.1% of them responded that the taste is the point to be most improved in the future. But there was no statistical difference by gender and the residence In order to make the taste of traditional food more attractive to modem people, the 37.8% of them replied it does not need to change the traditional preparation method. However, similar percentage of the schoolchildren(35.7%) answered it is needed to change partly the traditional preparation method. As for the effect of traditional foods on health, the 68.4% of schoolchildren thought that the our traditional foods are healthier than western foods.

  • Survival analysis mainly deals with the time to event, including death, onset of disease, and bankruptcy. The common characteristic of survival analysis is that it contains "censored" data, in which the time to event cannot be completely observed, but instead represents the lower bound of the time to event. Only the occurrence of either time to event or censoring time is observed. Many traditional statistical methods have been effectively used for analyzing survival data with censored observations. However, with the development of high-throughput technologies for producing "omics" data, more advanced statistical methods, such as regularization, should be required to construct the predictive survival model with high-dimensional genomic data. Furthermore, machine learning approaches have been adapted for survival analysis, to fit nonlinear and complex interaction effects between predictors, and achieve more accurate prediction of individual survival probability. Presently, since most clinicians and medical researchers can easily assess statistical programs for analyzing survival data, a review article is helpful for understanding statistical methods used in survival analysis. We review traditional survival methods and regularization methods, with various penalty functions, for the analysis of high-dimensional genomics, and describe machine learning techniques that have been adapted to survival analysis.

  • This article introduces transfer function model (TFM) with conditional heteroscedasticity where ARCH concept is built into the traditional TFM of Box and Jenkins (1976). Model building strategies such as identification, estimation and diagnostics of the model are discussed and are illustrated via empirical study including simulated data and real data as well. Comparisons with the classical TFM are also made.
