  • Objectives : Our study aims to help users take the medicinal materials in a desirable manner by providing toxic and contraindicating information, based on the ontology of medicinal materials in traditional Korean medicine (TKM). Methods : The toxic and contraindicating data are extracted for 160 medicinal materials from 67 books published in Korea and China. The extracted data are linked to the medicinal material in the ontology, respectively. Results : We in this paper construct an ontology for toxic and contraindicating data of medicinal materials in traditional Korean medicine (TKM), extending our conventional ontology. Based on the ontology, we devised a web-based searching tool that enables users to share the toxic and contraindicating information of medicinal materials. Conclusions : The contents in our ontology are facts based on the books, while the addition of clinical knowledge may elaborate the ontology. Moreover, the addition of easy explanations for terminologies in our ontology is required to help users which are not familiar to TKM.

  • When researchers plan R&D projects, they usually use patent map or paper map for the objective decision-making, but in traditional korean medicine field, domestic patents and papers have been mainly proposed as results of many R&D projects, while most of patent or paper map tools support international patents and SCI papers, respectively. Therefore, as an alternative one KIOM constructed the project map which can provide the technology landscape for R&D project information in traditional korean medicine field. But the functions of the system is limited to the search and analysis with chart. So sophisticated analysis results are hard to get from the existing system. This research's goal is to upgrade the web based project map analysis system to provide researcher rich functionality and advanced analysis tools.

  • The structure of medical profession is composed of multiple relations among state, patients, and medical professions. There are conflicts between the nation and medical professions because the nation controls the monopoly of medical professions through medical policies. Patients make relations with medical profession as medical consumers. And medical professions compete each other in order to gain the control of the medical market. This paper attempts to review the dynamic relations between the nation and medical professions. The medical professions and the nation are in conflict about the control of the autonomy of medical professions. The medical professions want to exercise the monopoly rights in their own area and, on the other had, the nation wants to prevent problems that might result from the monopoly by regulations and to have the control over the national operation. Given this, the common view of medical sociology is that the nation and the medical professions are in constant conflict. The arguments that the present medical sociology has on the relationship between the nation and medical professions can be summarized like these: first, the nation is the authenticator of medical system; second, the nation is a medical provider and consumer; and, third, the nation is a mediator of regulations and conflicts. Based on the above mentioned relations between the nation and medical professions, this paper attempts to see how the nation, which is one component of the medical structure, make influences on Korean Oriental doctors and Traditional Chinese doctors. So as to do this, the changes in medical policies and promoting policies for Korean Oriental medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine are analyzed. Finally, the differences in national policies of Korean Oriental medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine are compared.

  • In Traditional Oriental Medicine, there has been a growing needs for computerized diagnosis expert system, which can implement pre-diagnosis and correct the errors of practitioners. Therefore, we developed the expert system (KHU-PIPE : Kyung Hee University - Pattern Identification and Prescription Expert) for diagnosis and treatment. It has three characteristics as following. First. this system has the knowledge base which modified the standardized data designed by Chinese government during 1980s. Second, it provides the objective and standardized diagnosis as the results of pattern identification and their appropriate prescriptions for treatment. Third, it is applied to both LAN system and internet. Furthermore, it can be used as an educational methods for the practices of pattern identification and prescription, and provide the objective criteria for clinical studies and promote the Traditional Oriental Medicine as an evidence-based medicine.
