  • Objectives The objective of the study is to review the Korean traditional medicine treatment used in cruciate ligament injury. Methods According to patients, treatment methods, research design, evaluation tools, outcome, we searched for studies which performed Korean traditional medical treatment on patient with cruciate ligament injury. Results In 11 studies, total number of patents were 78. Patients were conducted with 11 kinds of treatment, which is acupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture, electro-acupuncture, burning acupuncture, moxibustion, physiotherapy, exercise, Chuna and cupping. The most commonly used measurement was visual analog scale. Conclusions Throughout the study, we could organize Korean traditional medicine treatment for patient with cruciate ligament injury. However it is difficult to figure out among the 11 intervention which interventions were effective in improving symptom. Therefore, further researches like randomized clinical trial and systematic review is needed in order to enhance the evidence of the Korean traditional medicine.

Method : This research was conducted based on the survey on patients whom have visited traditional Korean medical facilities in 2011 by the Ministry of Health and Welfares and Korean Institute for Health and Social Affairs. Using a sample of 3,931 (1,180 male and 2,751 female) outpatients' self-perceived health based on the data from usage and consumption of Korean Medicine. 'Healthy', 'Fair', and 'Poor Health' were used to measure patients' self-perceived health status. The data was analyzed by frequency, t-test, cross correlation analysis and multiple logistics regression analysis using the SPSS program package. Results : Sex(P<0.001), age(P<0.001), marital status(P<0.001), education(P<0.001), employment status(P<0.001), occupation(P<0.001), health insurance(P<0.001) and income level(P<0.0001) showed statistical significance. Main Treatment Facilities(P<0.001), experience of taking Korean medicine(P=0.032), experience of receiving acupuncture treatment(P<0.001), number of visits(P<0.001), medical expense (P=0.005), and subjective health status after the treatments showed statistical significance for Korean herbal medicine(P=0.038), acupuncture (P=0.001), cupping therapy(P=0.006), oriental physiotherapy(P=0.003), and treatment satisfaction(P<0.001). For subjective health status based on suffering disorders in the past three months, the response of poor health was higher in the group suffering recent illnesses. Statistical significance was seen in hypertension (P=0.002), arthritis(P<0.001), lumbar pain(P<0.001), diabetes mellitus(P=0.001), stroke(P<0.001), hwa-byung (P=0.001), gastric disorders(P=0.021), common cold(P<0.001), ankle sprain(P<0.001), muscular injury(P<0.001), lumbar sprain(p=0.009) and fracture(P=0.03). Also the number of diseases during the past three months showed statistical significance(P<0.001). Statistical significance was also seen in Level of knowledge(P<0.001), route of information(P<0.001), reliability of Korean medicine(P=0.003), insurance coverage(P=0.005), medical costs(P<0.001), and future willingness to use Korean medicine(P<0.001). As a result of the multiple logistics regression analysis, risks of subjective poor health statistically increased in female population, elderlies, medicaid beneficiaries, less educated, higher medical expense, and more disorders during the past three months. Conclusion : Patients' self-perceived health status has significant differences with each variables such as sex, age, marital status, education, health insurance, medical expense, number of diseases.

She was hospitalized for 120 days (without visiting Western medicine hospital) where she was treated with acupuncture, herbal decoction, pharmacopuncture, chuna, moxibustion and physiotherapy. Following treatment, her symptoms of dizziness were evaluated using the numeric rating scale and showed pain had reduced (3 to 0). The K-Modified Barthel, showed that life performance had improved (15 to 74), and the Berg balance scale showed an improved balance (2 to 32). Steps per minute and gait posture at stance phase for ataxia also showed improvement. This case report shows that Korean medicine treatment is effective in alleviating dizziness and improved gait instability caused by cerebellar infarction.

  • Changes in symptoms and dysfunction related to meniscus tears following the use of Korean medicine for ≥ 4 days were studied. The medical charts of 53 cases of diagnosed meniscus tears (magnetic resonance imaging) with an admission Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score ≥ 4, between 2017 and 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Treatments included acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal treatment, Chuna therapy, and physiotherapy. The NRS, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, and European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions were performed at admission and discharge. There were 42 females and 11 males in this study. Patients were more likely to be in their 60s (38.18%), have an unknown etiology (81.13%), and have complex tears (50.94%). After receiving a combination of alternative Korean medicine during hospitalization, the mean NRS score improved from 6.82 ± 1.19 to 3.66 ± 1.83 (p < 0.001), the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index score improved from 46.47 ± 20.99 to 37.98 ± 19.23 (p < 0.001), and the mean European Quality of Life Five Dimensions score improved from 0.61 ± 0.18 to 0.68 ± 0.14 (p < 0.001) after treatment. These results suggest that Korean medicine treatment of meniscus tears alleviated pain and improved physical function.

  • Background: When applying the upper limb neurodynamic treatment ULNT1 and upper limb neurodynamic treatment ULNT2, The object of this study evaluates the pain and grip strength, nerve conduction velocity and tries to present the treatment that is effective in the carpal tunnel syndrome through the comparison of effect between tests. Methods: The ULNT1 (n=10) and ULNT2 (n=10) was applied to the carpal tunnel syndrome in patient of 20 subject for 10 time 5 set during 4 weeks. Both groups received conventional physical therapy (hot pack with 30 minutes and ICT with 15 minutes and ultra sound with 15 minutes). Results: The ULNT1 showed the difference which the result of this study significantly in the median nerve motor latency, median nerve motor amplitude, median nerve sensory latency, median nerve sensory amplitude, grip strength and pain. ULNT2 showed the difference significantly in median nerve motor latency, median nerve motor amplitude, median nerve sensory latency, median nerve sensory amplitude and pain. Conclusions: If it implements by applying the traditional physiotherapy and ULNT1 and ULNT2 to the carpal tunnel syndrome subjects according to the subject state and function, the remedial value can be more enhanced.
