Objectives: The aim of this study was to report the effectiveness of TMJ balancing therapy and Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) treatments on a thalamus cerebral infarction patient with hemiparesis and gait disturbance. Methods: The patient was treated with TMJ balancing therapy, along with korean herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and physical therapy. The motor function was evaluated through the Manual Muscle Test (MMT), Grasp power and Functional Ambulatory Category (FAC). And the daily life ability was evaluated by the Korean version of the Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) and Korean National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (K-NIHSS). Results: After 17 days of TMJ balancing therapy and TKM treatments, the score of MMT did not improved, but the score of FAC, K-MBI, K-NIHSS improved. Conclusions: This study suggested that TMJ balancing therapy and TKM treatments could be effective for hemiparesis and gait disturbance in patients with thalamus cerebral infarction.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the current status of treatments and patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and then map out of a strategy for development of generalized-treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy in Traditional Korean Medicine. Methods: We selected research materials from various databases such as PubMed, Google, KStudy, KoreanTK, OIM, KOMS and books. Also, to understand current tendencies of medical examination and treatment related with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, we requested Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service clinical data from 2003 to 2007. Results: It is reported that the incidence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy is increasing in an aging society. The medical fees of National Health Insurance related with diabetic peripheral neuropathy show a year-on-year increase. There are no particularly effective therapies for diabetic peripheral neuropathy in Western medicine, and in some papers, it was reported that treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy using Traditional Korean Medicine was effective. However, patients usually visit on Western medical center rather than seek Traditional Korean Medicine. To take charge of clinical fields related with diabetic peripheral neuropathy by Traditional Korean Medicine, we need more studies and experiments of diabetic peripheral neuropathy using Traditional Korean Medicine and should make a standardized protocol. Conclusion: Various studies related with diabetic peripheral neuropathy using Traditional Korean Medicine will have to be undertaken hereafter. We expect that Traditional Korean Medicine will play a vital role in treating of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Objective: This study presents a case of a 64-year-old Korean male with left-side hemifacial anhidrosis due to stroke who was treated with traditional Korean medical treatments.Method: The patient was treated with acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and moxibustion around the eyes, and was administered Chungpyesagan-tang and Yuldahanso-tang. We performed a sweat percentage test and compared the results with those of the other side of the face to evaluate sweat dysfunction.Results: Sweat function appeared to improve after the administration of traditional Korean medical treatments.Conclusion: Traditional Korean medical treatments may be effective in treating hemifacial anhidrosis due to stroke.

Objective This study analyzed randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on pediatric asthma using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to determine its efficacy and safety. Methods We searched electronic databases in English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean and evaluated 35 articles published up to December 28, 2022. Based on data from the literature, we analyzed treatments, results, composition of herbal medicine, frequency of medicinal herbs, and decoction. Results TCM for pediatric asthma was compared to supportive therapy, inhaled corticosteroids, and standardized treatments. Of the 35 studies, 32 showed that TCM treatments were effective in alleviating asthma symptoms. Furthermore, TCM treatment was considered safe compared to common asthma treatments. Among the TCM treatments for pediatric asthma, the most frequent decoctions were Gamisaganmahwangtang (加味射干麻黃湯) and Saganmahwangtang (射干麻黃湯). Ephedra Herba (麻黄), Armeniacae Semen (杏仁), Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma (細辛), Belamcandae Rhizoma (射干) were herbs that were frequently used for asthma in TCM decoctions. Conclusion This review showed that TCM is effective in treating pediatric asthma. More clinical RCTs are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of TCM treatment.

Background : This case is to report a gallbladder cancer patient treated with Korean Medicine who could not receive conventional cancer therapies such as operation and chemotherapy due to her underlying diseases, old age and poor performance. Method and Results : An eighty-year-old female patient was diagnosed with stage IV gallbladder cancer on Feb. 2014 and she already had hypertension, diabetes and Parkinsonism. Comprehensive Korean Medicine (KM) treatments instead of operation and chemotherapy were administrated due to her poor condition and old age. KM treatments were done focused on improving symptoms and quality of life combined with best supportive care. During KM treatments her abdominal pain was generally managed and she survived for 22 months. Conclusion : Further studies should be performed in the future to clarify the survival benefit and symptom management of comprehensive KM treatments.

Psoriasis is a chronic disease that has no definitive cure. In this review study, the main sources of Persian Medicine (PM) such as the Canon of Medicine (by Avicenna) and Al-Havi (by Rhazes) were assessed to identify non-pharmacological treatments for psoriasis. Several treatments that are recommended for this disease include nutritional advice, lifestyle modifications, and manipulation therapy such as wet cupping (Hijamah), leech therapy, and phlebotomy (Fasd). These recommendations may help to prevent recurrence and be useful in improving psoriasis. The efficacy of PM recommendations to improve psoriasis should be evaluated in future studies.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Korean traditional treatments for Climacteric Syndrome Patients with Hwa-Byung. Methods: From February 2015 to May 2015, We treated 5 Cases Patients with Korean traditional treatments for a month. We measured treatment effects by Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI). Results: After treatment, First, the scores of MRS, BDI were decreased. Second, the symptoms such as hot flush, pantalgia, palpitation, insomnia, fatigue were significantly improved. Also, the difference of 膻中 (CV17, Danjung) and 關元 (CV4, Guanyuan) temperatures were significantly decreased after treatment. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean traditional treatments such as Gamicheonglijagam-hwan, acupuncture, moxibustion are effective on Climacteric Syndrome Patients with Hwa-Byung.

Objectives : This study was designed to collect the latest papers and to find more effective approach for childhood obesity. Methods : We searched 107 papers in English from Pubmed(www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) and selected 52 in favor of our study. In addition to that, we searched 29 papers in Chinese from www.cnki.net. Results are as follows. Results and Conclusions : There are not completely new treatments for childhood obesity. Instead of that, many studies aimed for prevention through family education, nutrition education, and exercises education. Specially, because some diseases including hypertension, diabetes and heart disease are connected with obese children, medication can be prescribed optionally. In that case, their mental health must be laid emphasis. And in China, TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine) is very common treatment for childhood obesity. Acupuncture, herb medication and manual therapy could be used usefully. It is suggested that above latest treatments can be combined with Korean traditional treatments method in treating obese children.

Objectives: To report the reduction of adverse effects of chemotherapy and improvement in the quality of life in recurrent liver metastasis by Korean medicine treatments. Methods: In 2018, a 75-year-old male patient underwent surgery for primary cancer in the ampulla of Vater. In 2021, he was diagnosed with recurrent liver metastasis. Following the failure of tumor treatment with gemcitabine/cisplatin and the development of severe side effects, he decided to discontinue chemotherapy. Subsequently, with a significantly enlarged liver tumor, he resumed capecitabine/oxaliplatin treatment, alongside moxibustion, acupuncture, and herbal prescriptions from August 2021 to August 2023. The changes of chief complaints, abdominal CT, and laboratory findings were investigated. Results: After combined treatment of Korean traditional medicine and chemotherapy, the mass was decreased. Laboratory findings, and chief complaints of hand-foot syndrome, fatigue, abdominal distension, nausea and anorexia were improved. Conclustions: This case study suggests that Korean traditional medicine is effective in enhancing anticancer effects, suppressing the side effects of chemotherapy, and improving general conditions.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to understand the treatment process experiences of patients with whiplash associated disorder treated with Traditional Korean Medicine. Methods : This study was based on grounded theory. We recruited a total of 10 participants between the ages of 19 and 65, who were hospitalized at Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital and received treatment after traffic accidents from January to October 2014. Data was collected from in-depth interviews and notes, and was analyzed using open coding, axial coding and selective coding. Results : The core category of the phenomenon: 'The experiences of the treatment process for patients with whiplash associated disorder treated with Traditional Korean Medicine', was elicited as 'The selection of Traditional Korean Medicine treatment over other treatments for holistic healing that supplement for the deficiencies of Western medical treatment'. Conclusion :' The experiences of treatment process for patients with whiplash associated disorder treated with Traditional Korean Medicine', was elicited as 'The selection of the Traditional Korean Medicine treatment over other treatments for holistic healing that complements deficiency of the Western medical treatment'.
