  • Until 1960, the major housing type of rural area in Korea was traditional wooden frame building, which was made of natural materials. In the course of modernization and New Village Movement, most of traditional houses have been renovated focusing on changing roof material of rice straw into slate, keeping existing main wooden structure. And then from around 1980, by economical development the new houses have been constructed. On these three phases of traditional type, remodeling type and new construction type, the natural materials of housing facade as wood, soil, stone and plant changed into artificial materials as cement, chemical material and paint. At the same time the exterior color of housing also have been changed and varied. The purpose of this thesis is to find out the changing aspect of exterior color by comparing remodeled and new constructed housing with of traditional housing. The exterior color of one hundred and fifty seven houses were surveyed and the three color attributes of each part of facade, as roof, wall and window, were analyzed and compared. In case of traditional houses, 98.3% of color are concentrated on the warm color of Y and YR on HUE scale, and 88% of their color are low Chroma. And Value of their color has been varied and spreaded from low to high Value scale. From traditional types to remodeled and new constructed houses, the concentration ratio of warm color on Hue scale reduced from 98.3% to 68.7% and ratio of low Chroma was also changed from 88% to 73.2% and the ratio of low Value color reduced from 51.9% to 29.7%. The exterior color of houses in rural area varied on Hue, and the more saturated colors were used and they became brighter compared with color of traditional houses. It is expected that the results of this study can be used for basic data of exterior color planning and improvement into harmonized color with natural environment.

  • Modern society is filled with the pursuit of material wealth and great convenience due to high technology that has been introduced to all facets of society. There is no exception to this in the field of construction. Modern construction, however, has caused environmental destruction and pollution, disturbing the coexistence of humans and nature. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore how humans and nature can maintain a mutually beneficial relationship by looking into the construction of Jeju's traditional dwelling house. This thesis examines the geographical features of Jeju and looks into how Jeju people have adapted themselves to nature. It is assumed that geographical features have created Jeju's unique environment and style of architecture and differentiated Jeju's traditional houses from those of other regions. Also, it is considered that geographical features had a large impact on traditional construction such as the floor plan and the layout of buildings. Accordingly, this thesis explores the way traditional houses protected house dwellers from the natural environment and examines the wisdom of our ancestors who took advantage of the natural environment. In addition, this thesis aims to contribute to creating Jeju's unique construction culture and environment by studying materials, structures, and forms that were applied to the traditional houses of Jeju.

These control method are various Passive system of using natural materials, considering micro climate, building lay out, and these system are much natural and ecological to make the comfortable indoor climate than active systems of the present houses. This study aims to analyzed the acoustical characteristics of Korean traditional houses varied with lay out and floor plan to reflect the way of control for environmental condition. The reverberation time and level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen are measured in each houses. As a result, the reverberation time of Korean traditional rooms are below 0.6 second, and the sound insulation performance of Korean traditional door are mostly very low grade with D-15. The level difference between rooms are low grade not to meet minimum class except between main living room and master room away from main living building. These above results show that our traditional house are much more emphasized seeking visual privacy of rooms than aural privacy.

This study aims to analyzed control performance of outdoor environment of five Korean traditional houses during the summer and winter. These houses are varied with lay out and floor plan to reflect the way of control for environmental condition, surveyed the reverberation time and sound level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen. Especially air temperature and humidity have been measured simultaneously in each rooms to compare with outdoor condition. As a result, the variation of air temperature and humidity of most rooms are considerably static while condition of outdoors are much varied, it is showed that indoor climate has been controled with traditional soiled walls.
