  • This study is carried out to introduce the concept of Kagome structure as the new trial for the furniture design and the feasibility of its utilization in furniture industry. Kagome means originally the two dimensional bamboo-basket woven pattern that is composed of interlaced triangles whose lattice points each have four neighboring points, which was used in traditional bamboo craft design like 'Jukbuin(bamboo-wife)'. Its unique truss structure has been widely used by many kinds of the domain of science and engineering in mechanical and architectural industry with some merits, i,e, material utilization efficiency and robust strength. Here we tried to introduce two dimensional and three dimensional form of Kagome which are supposed to be a furniture design elements. Authors think these Kagome design could be realized with domestic lumber of inferior properties. Both of them would be used as a decorative element or mechanical supporter in furniture design.

  • Korea has a dark age in terms of culture in the last 20th century. Korea had been struggling between the Great Powers of the world in the imperialism and had sacrifice to keep our own culture itself. Japanese imperialist's a invasion, culture liquidation by Japan, Independence from Japan, Korean war and Influence by US are major bitter historical affair after close of Chosun Dynasty in the process of modernization. Therefore Korea couldn't stay in the center of world cultural core parts and was degraded as cultural consumption country which was provided oversea culture by other countries. Then Korea couldn't develop our unique traditional idea and culture. In the meantime there are both extreme phenomena; one is expulsion of other cultures absolutely and the other is only following western culture unconditionally like trimming policy in the end of colony age. These discreet and unfiltered western culture had been influenced Korea culture over the wide range strongly and resulted in cultural colony situation to produce western imitation culture without philosophy and traditional spirit. Even though Korea has met opportunity in the culture, we called "Han Trend", no formation of own culture is main reason for psychological panic. Korea furniture design is one of parts of lost of tradition culture and typical parts in reproducing western imitation culture. As a result furniture industry's major reason for loss value as exporting industry compared to other industries result in most of the furniture products without our unique identity. This situation become more deepen unfortunately. This report would like to suggest the direction of design with global competition capability and cultural identity to boost Korean furniture design industry by comparing, analyzing and speculating between design of Chosun dynasty and philosophy of modernism in western.

  • The objective of this study is to apply the modular furniture system, which has been developed actively in western Europe and America since 1970's, to Korean contemporary furniture having converted into western style gradually. The factors requiring the modular furniture system in today's residential environment are as follows; 1. Population increase and urbanization 2. Development of industrial technology 3. Improvement of living condition and change of life style. As these factors increase the problem of diminishing space, multiple functional modular furniture concept has become a solution. Reviewing the current scene of the western modular furniture system, it is classified into modular seating system, mopular wall system, modular commode system and modular storage system. Korean wardrobe, which is am mixed style of traditional and contemporary furniture, should change to a closet eventually because of the grand size and unpractical use of space. Since most Korean family, however, have wardrobes already, it will be necessary to have a turning period to systemized the closet space in Korean residential interior. For the turning period, application of the modular wall system would be one answer to substitute the wardrobe.

Inscribed pattern technique using rare materials in the area have been used by the artisans of artistic flair and functionality and its value is also highly regarded from ancient to modern and inherits and is being developed today. Existing inlay technique, however, has not been spread out because it needs craftsman's skill based on the handcraft and inscribed materials are very rare to use. This paper aims to replace natural wood Sanggam materials for traditional furniture patterns such as Samho Jang, Ohho Jang, Seongtoenoe Moon, Gyeopgwinoe Moon and wood inlay text like Soo (Long life), Bok (Luck), Kang (Peace), Ryoung (Relaxed) and gammadion cross pattern. Gathered black, yellow and white color dyed wood using power tools can replace rare natural inlay materials through reliable and standardized supply. Dyed-gathered inlay materials can easily replace wood inlay materials, therefore, attempt to create an improved direction regarding materials and fabrication techniques in order to make traditional or contemporary artistic furniture to be produced.
