Gerrit Rietveld 가구디자인의 조형특성연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Gerrit Rietveld's Furniture Design)

  • Gerrit Rietveld who is Dutch architect and furniture designer had explored the plastic abstractness based on the universality of De Stijl principle. He had tried to expand the boundary of furniture design bound to traditional form and decorative aesthetics. Beginning of 20th century, he opened the new aesthetic realm of pure and abstract value for furniture design for the first time. Through this research, the results can be summarized as follows. The characteristics of his deign are abstractness, spatial consideration and tectonic construction. The abstractness is attained by simplifying constructional material into geometrical forms such as straight line, rectangle and square. And he adopted unconventional way of construction in order to increase this abstractness. The space included in his furniture can be expressed in the new technology of joint, the visual transparency using linear material, and the destruction of corners. All these aspects harmoniously helped the feeling of architectural space of flow. Through the exposed frame of furniture, Rietveld emphasized on the tectonic construction by methodological treatment such as piling-up or overlapping material. The characteristics of Gerrit Rietveld's design are abstract, spatial and tectonic. These aesthetical tendencies could be understood as a junction between De Stijl's principles and modern architecture's spatial preferences-flow and extension of space-.

맥킨토시의 가구 디자인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Furniture Design of Charles Rennie Mackintosh)

  • Based on the background of the times and theoretical background that influenced the formation of the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of representative architects of Art Nouveau, this study examined the formative characteristics of furniture design by period. In addition, his influences on the modern furniture design were also reviewed. In the latter half of the 19th century, due to Arts and Crafts Movement, the popularity of Art Nouveau was not high in England and due to conservative and traditional culture, Mackintosh had difficult time to display his ability in England. On the other hand, because Glasgow, one of industrial cities located in the center of Scotland where he had grown was an open and modern city, Mackintosh could win international fame in architecture and furniture design thanks to the atmosphere. Furthermore, it is found from the formative characteristics of his works that Historicism, Arts and Crafts Movement and Japanese culture and the influences of Continent became his theoretical background. His works creatively combined the noble design of Scotland and Art Nouveau to be considered a simple and pure style with a straight tendency and his working period can be divided into Beginning, Middle and Last Period according to the formative characteristics of furniture design. His constituting principle that decorated the structure influenced the Wien Secession's activities to form Wiener Werkstaette and this finally became the important background to develop to 'Modernism Design' through Art Deco and Bauhaus.

싱글족을 위한 다기능 가구 디자인 컨셉연구 (A Study on the Multi-function Furniture Design Concept for the 'Singles')

  • 전통사회로부터의 발전 및 변화에 따라 사람들의 사고방식과 생활습관도 변하고 있다. 현대 사회에서는 전통적인 가치관의 탈피와 결혼관 등의 변화로 인해 싱글족이 점차 늘어나고 있으며, 이에 따라 싱글족의 행동방식, 생활환경, 소비습관 역시 관심의 대상이 되었다. 싱글족의 출현으로 전통 가구 역시 이미 이들의 수요를 만족할 수 없게 되었고, 때문에 싱글족의 특성에 맞춘 가구 디자인을 개발해야 한다. 본 연구는 싱글족의 발생배경 및 소비심리에 대한 연구를 통해, 싱글족의 소비와 기호의 특성을 분석했으며, 가구수요를 조사해 싱글족의 거주형태, 가구종류 및 특징에 대해 정리하고 있다. 또한 SWOT분석 방법을 사용하여 싱글족 가구의 장단점에 관하여 한층 더 체계적인 연구를 진행했다. 더불어 싱글족의 가구 수요, 거주형태 및 싱글족 가구의 장단점에 대한 분석을 종합하여 싱글족을 위한 멀티형 가구 디자인이라는 개념을 내놓았으며, 이를 기초하여 싱글족의 특징 및 수요를 만족할 수 있는 가구 디자인으로 싱글족의 가구수요를 만족시키기 위해 본 연구를 진행했다. 마지막으로 멀티형 디자인 및 접이식 기능은 공간 활용도를 향상시켰으며, 새로운 제품 디자인 개발방법을 제시한 점에서 새로운 의미를 가진다.

Manufacture of Rainbow-colored Veneer by Natural Dyeing

  • The wood veneers were clearly rainbow-colored with natural dyes. As shown through Korean-style jacket with stripes of multi-colors beyond traditional obang colors (red, blue, yellow, black and white colors), eco-friendly coloring methods representing Korean colors familiar from old times could be used nobly by coloring natural wood veneer being raw material of wood products. In terms of industrialization, the study to manifest korean color, substituting chemical stains such as dye and pigment, would be necessary. In order to realize this purpose, the study about economical dyeing materials and characteristics, that is, mordant, dyeing and drying techniques showing environment-friendly coloring and high coloration level ought to be followed. In addition to this, investigating discoloration transition by fading test for interior and exterior uses would have to be carried out.

염색집성목을 이용한 목가구 개발에 관한 연구 2 (A Study on the Development of Wooden Furniture used with Dyed-Glued laminated Wood)

  • Recently, shows the possibility of providing such dyed-gathered woods after forming single boar This studyds with using cheap timbers generated by the thinning. It is helpful for master artisans are suffering from finding qualified materials. Traditionally, the master artisan has been used the beautiful grained wood from around roots of old zelkova trees and black persimmon trees. Instead, this study shows that dyed-gathered woods replace the natural grained wood and also produces a furniture made of an aggregate and a plate from walnut trees and ash trees which are a contrast to dyed-gathered woods. Dyed-gathered woods can reproduce the various colors to satisfy people's tastes, and the dignified grains that we can see in the old woods. Besides, dyed-gathered woods can replace rare materials and provide higher reliability of supplies.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze behavioral patterns of elderly residents and to identify the characteristics of using furniture and home appliances by elderly-headed households. For this purpose, field studies that included observation and open-ended interview were conducted with 52 households. The data was analyzed with frequency, chi-square test by SPSS 14.0 for windows. The major findings of this study were that: 1) Elderly households had more sitting-down style furniture which was a traditional living mode than western style furniture. 2) They experienced inconvenience to use home appliances that were not designed for the aged. 3) Their behavioral patterns were related with family type and income.

  • The purpose of this study is to arrange the modification and the changes of modern fniture in Korea. The results of this study are as follows: 1) The style of traditional furniture was influenced by changes in class structure and social system, an increase in Honsu norms in terms of both quantity and quality, family, marrige, housing patterns, and behavioral patterns etc. 2) Modern furniture in Korea devided into two groups, one was traditiional group of innovative function and scale, the other was electing group of Japanase or Western style. 3) Due to the Honsu norms, Wedding furniture items became more various in kind.   • Understanding of the properties of woods is important in wood utilization. Until now, traditional wooden houses(Korean-style house, Buddhist temple, royal palaces) and furniture have been made of domestic woods with the experience of a craftsman rather than the scientific knowledge on woods. Because of concrete-based houses and imported wood products and furniture, even wood craftsmen decrease in number, too. This study was carried out to collect wood samples growing in Korea and to measure wood characteristics. Anatomical, physical and mechanical properties of 37 wood species were investigated.

  • Architects and designers of the 20th Century made various efforts to establish new design languages reflecting the changes of society, the times, and environment. They used furniture, especially chairs, as controversial items of aesthetic value, society and ideology. Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto are furniture designers as well as architects, who adopted this ‘spirit of the times’ actively and have greatly contributed to modernism. This study will help us to understand the diversity of design since modernism, by comparing these two designers' furniture design. It also covers the common factors In modern furniture design, and analyses their individuality and likeness In design. The following is a comparison of furniture design by Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto. Le Courbusier linked International design and Aalto linked Rational design and Organic concept design to their furniture, just as they did in their architecture. They were able to establish the base of modern furniture design by adapting new concepts and pursuing humanism. In structure, Le Corbusier's furniture Is simple and proportional. It demonstrates a sophisticated geometric composition, mechanical beauty. On the other hand, Aalto rationally linked nature with human requirements and his furniture is organic and in harmony with geometric structure. In function, Le Corbusier's furniture is standardized and prefabricated. He designed for the user so they could choose to use the furniture efficiently to suit their needs. In comparison with Le Corbusier, Aalto Invented the ‘Stacking Chair’ which allows a more effective use of space and reflected the structure of the human body to improve the user's comfort. In materials and techniques, Le Corbusier used new materials like metal or leather, and attempted new ways such as welding, prefabrication, and standardization for production. On the contrary, Alto mainly used birch, which is the traditional material in Finland, and tried new bent wood techniques and joining methods.
