  • Since modernization period thru Japanese colonial era the modern architect began to play a important role for Korean housing architecture. So called 'House as an Art Work', detached houses by prominent architects, belong to a meaningful sector in Korean modern housing architecture. The harmony with tradition was always big issue for such works. This study aims to understand how paradigms for tradition were interpreted with the changes of the time. The analysis showed various tryout by architects, that concretize traditional characteristics in their work. For example, traditional lifestyle were clearly reflected in the floorplan during 30's and 40's. In the 70's building mass and formative roof design were emphasized to present traditional image. As well as it represented primitive esthetic and vernacular decoration. In addition, expressive tendency, that demonstrates korean sentiment through material and its texture, got a preference. Since latter half of 80's some traditional architectural elements were modernized and space characteristics were newly created from acculturation. Furthermore the philosophy of "Subdivision of building wings and Emptiness" follows this trend. This type made a courtyard and connected articulated building masses each other. "Sympathy with Nature" were most essential for a traditional houses in contrast with western architecture. Many architects today make various method to bring nature into interior space and to contemplate nature In the house. Such kinds of adaptation to tradition could be understood as a unique process to manifest identity of Korean modern houses.

  • This study examined the political, social, and historical characteristics of the Great Mosque of Algiers, alongside its functional, spatial, and symbolic aspects. Generally, mosques are buildings where religious expression is profoundly intense, making it challenging to apply new types and designs. However, the Great Mosque of Algiers successfully inherits traditional Islamic features while simultaneously embodying modernity at an international level. The results of the multifaceted analysis of the convergence of tradition and modernity in this contemporary architectural work are as follows: First, through research on Islamic architecture, the study identified the functional and spatial characteristics expressed in Islamic buildings. In particular, the study highlighted the features of the Külliye as a multi-use building complex and provided a detailed analysis of symbolic elements such as minarets, domes, ablution facilities, and mihrabs, which are strongly emphasized in mosques where religious features are prominently displayed. Second, the analysis of the Great Mosque of Algiers' architectural plan explored the inte-gration of tradition and modernity. Traditional elements are akin to the identity of the building and contribute to its overall value. Third, by examining the development process of the Great Mosque of Algiers project, the study analyzed the international cooperation required in the modern era, understanding the hybrid nature of this architectural project.

  • Kenzo Tange was interested in how to express tradition in the process of creation of modern architecture and tried to express the traditionaluty of Japanese architecture in his own way. In particular, Tange expressed Japanese tradition in terms of building materials and components from the point of view of his own 'New Tradition'. Tange created the 'Japanese style of architecture' based on traditional architecture to match the discourse of international architecture and distinguish it from the Western one, by harmonizing the plasticity of Japanese traditional architecture with the Western technology in building materials and components. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the signs and traces of traditions in the building materials and components in his architecture. Through this study, I would like to have implications for our architecture, which had a very different process and result from Japan in digesting and combining it with traditional architecture although Western civilization was accepted at about the same time.

  • During the first twenty-six years of its existence from 1954 to 1980, Keimyung University established on its Daemyung Campus a unique community of Western period-style buildings which recalls an old liberal arts college in America. During the first fifteen years, Keimyung built basically in the neo-Georgian style in accordance with the visions of the first two presidents, both of American nationality. During the next eleven years when Keimyung considerably expanded its facilities, it built in the neo-Classical style. The architecture of the Daemyung Campus is not without dynamism as it shows some efforts to integrate the expressions of the historical and the modern, culminating in the Main Library. The Daemyung Campus thus presents an interesting case study of how Western period-style architecture was assimilated in a provincial Korean city with a sense of an on-going building tradition.

  • Unconventional with respect for tradition: The Karel Doorman building stands in the heart of Rotterdam's shopping area and is a remarkable combination of restoration and new development. On top of the Ter Meulen shopping centre - a monument of the post-war reconstruction period - we have built an extremely light-weight construction in steel and wood (See Figure 1 & 2). This unconventional building method - at least in the Netherlands - enabled the construction of a 70 metres high 'glass' residential building with 114 apartments and 156 parking places. In this way a remarkable historic Rotterdam building was preserved for the future while at the same time new housing was created on a sheer impossible location, contributing to the quality of life and social safety in this part of the city.

  • Architecture had played a significant role model in philosophy because the construction of building represented doing philosophy. 'Architecture as metaphor' made it possible that doing philosophy was a kind of construction of thinking and western philosopher considered himself as an architect of idea. As a system of system, architectural analogy gave philosophy a chance to insist himself as a theory of theory. So architecture had always been a privileged model of discourse system and also a fundamental metaphor in philosophy. Because of its original meaning, Architecture as techne could be considered as poiesis, that was the special building(making) in western culture. The archi(arche) - structure(techne) was a ideal model and mechanism of philosophy because with this analogy doing philosophy became a kind of building act to make a logical system of idea. This kind of tradition in philosophy, especially metaphysics, made the characteristics of western philosophy 'architectonic' that implied the meaning of the rational, stable, hierarchical and holistic. But this kind of tradition exposed the problem of philosophy that focused on Identity and excluded the others. The logocentrism of western philosophy was also the limitation of architectonic thinking and its reductionism became a grand monologue which only allowed systematic, rational discourse. Its ideological position Inevitably caused the anti-architectural thinking in modern age as a diverse form of new trend of thinking as like postmodernism or deconstruction. Even Deconstructivism, or 'informe', non-representation in architecture depends upon anti-architectural thinking. Relationship between architecture as metaphor and the building of philosophy is problematique issue.
