A lot of researches on a linear induction motor(LIM) have been advanced to realize a traction system with high efficiency and performance for railway transit for a long time. However, most of them are limited in design of a LIM part such as Primary and Secondary. At a LIM which is traveling, the change of an air-gap(It occurs by a construction tolerance of a secondary reaction plate) becomes the cause which decreases a smoother ride and the efficiency of railway transit system. Therefore, uniform air-gap operation of LIM is important issue to improve the system efficiency. However, the researches which control the air-gap length of the LIM with technical and high-cost problem have been not advanced a lot. Therefore, in this research, it is introduced an air-gap control system for performance test machine of a scale-downed LIM which is able to control the air-gap length of the LIM and monitor a variety of performance changes of the propulsion system, and conducted a research on feasibility of the system based on characteristic analysis.

This paper presents a detailed realization of direct torque controlled induction motor drive for elevator applications. The drive is controlled according to the well-known space vector modulated direct control scheme (SVM-DTC). As the elevator drives are usually equipped with speed sensors, flux estimation is carried out using a current model where two stator currents are measured and accurate instantaneous rotor speed measurement is used to overcome the need for measuring stator voltages. Speed profiling for a comfortable elevator ride and other supervisory control activities to provide smooth operation are also explained. The drive performance is examined and controllers' parameters are fine-tuned using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The blocks used for flux and torque estimation and control in the offline simulation are compiled for real-time using dSPACE Microlabox. The performance of the drive has been verified experimentally. The results show good performance under transient and steady state conditions.
Background: Increasing the slip resistance of floor surfaces would be desirable, but there is a lack of evidence on whether traction properties are linearly correlated with the topographic features of the floor surfaces or what scales of surface roughness are required to effectively control the slipperiness of floors. Objective: This study expands on earlier findings on the effects of floor surface finishes against slip resistance performance and determines the operative ranges of floor surface roughness for optimal slip resistance controls under different risk levels of walking environments. Methods: Dynamic friction tests were conducted among three shoes and nine floor specimens under wet and oily environments and compared with a soapy environment. Results: The test results showed the significant effects of floor surface roughness on slip resistance performance against all the lubricated environments. Compared with the floor-type effect, the shoe-type effect on slip resistance performance was insignificant against the highly polluted environments. The study outcomes also indicated that the oily environment required rougher surface finishes than the wet and soapy ones in their lower boundary ranges of floor surface roughness. Conclusion: The results of this study with previous findings confirm that floor surface finishes require different levels of surface coarseness for different types of environmental conditions to effectively manage slippery walking environments. Collected data on operative ranges of floor surface roughness seem to be a valuable tool to develop practical design information and standards for floor surface finishes to efficiently prevent pedestrian fall incidents.

The purpose of engine control TCS is to regulate engine torque to keep driven wheel slip in a desired range. In this paper, engine control TCS using sliding mode control law based on engine model and estimated load torque is proposed. This system includes a two-level controller. Slip controller calculates desired wheel torque, and engine torque controller determines throttle angle for engine torque corresponding to desired wheel torque. Another issue is to measure load torque for model based controller design. Luenberger observer with state variables of load torque and engine speed solves this problem as estimating load torque. The performance of controller and observer is certificated by simulation using 8-degree vehicle model, Pacejka tire model, and 2-state engine model. The simulation results in various maneuvers during slippery and split road conditions showed that acceleration performance and ability of the vehicle with TCS is improved. Also, the load torque observer could estimate real load torque very well, so its performance was proved.

In general, the braking system of a high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. To stop safely the train at its pre-decided position, it is necessary to properly combine the various brakes. The train has adopted a combined electrical and mechanical (friction) braking systems. In order to design a good brake system, it is essential for designers to predict the brake performance. In this paper, the braking performance analysis program has been developed and verified by comparing the simulation results with the brake test results of HSR-350x; both results match very well. Also, the brake performances of high speed trains can be predicted by using this program under various conditions.

A TCS slip control system improves acceleration capability and steerability on slippery roads through engine torgue and/or brake torque control. This research mainly deals with the engine control algorithm via the adjustment of the engine throttle angle. The following new control strategy is proposed and investigated ; the TCS slip controller whose input is the difference between the desired driving wheel speed corresponding to the optimum slip ratio and the actual speed yields the target engine torque and then estimates the throttle angle based on the engine performance curve. Various simulation and hardware-in-the-loop simulation have been carried out. The results show the proposed strategy may compensate for the inherent nonlinearity between variation of the throttle angle and variation of the engine torque and produce better performance than the previous strategies without the engine map, especially in the high speed region.

The in-wheel motor used in green car was designed and constructed for an electric direct-drive traction system. It is difficult to connect cooling water piping because the in-wheel motor is located within the wheel structure. In the air cooling structure for the in-wheel motor, a outer surface on the housing is provided with cooling grooves to increase the heat transfer area. In this study, we carried out the analysis on the fluid flow and thermal characteristics of the in-wheel motor under the effects of motor speed and heat generation. In order to check the problem of heat release, the analysis has been performed using conjugate heat transfer (conduction and convection). As a result, flow fields and temperature distribution inside the in-wheel motor were obtained for base speed condition (1250 rpm) and maximum speed condition (5000 rpm). Also, the thermo-flow characteristics analysis of in-wheel motor for vehicles was performed in consideration of ram air effect. Therefore, we checked the feasibility of the air cooling for the housing geometry having cooling grooves and investigated the cooling performance enhancement.
The Korean High-Speed Train(HSR 350x) had been developed by through 'G7-R&D project' in 1996-2002, and has been testing and evaluating it's reliability on the high-speed line until now. A number of core equipments designed and developed by using domestic technologies were boarded on the HSR 350x. In order to verify the performance of HSR 350x and core equipments such as traction system, brake system and pantograph, sophisticated testing and evaluating procedures should be considered and applied. In this paper, the tested and analysed results about the dynamic characteristics of HSR 350x pantograph are introduced in a view point of the mean contact force and it's variation trend, criterion of current collection, and up-lifting of contact wire when the MSR 350x running up to 350 km/h. Through the test and evaluation, we verified that HSR 350x pantograph had an excellent current collection performance and good dynamic characteristics as it had been designed.

This paper presents an parallel type Linear Induction Motor with ununiform airgap for a shallow-depth underground train with 100‰ grade and 15 m curvature. This parallel type LIM has enough gradability but has inherently ununiform airgap between center and end parts. Consequently, performance when the train passes curved section should be considered with transient analysis. Moreover, general parallel operation, 1C2M which is usually used for train operation, deteriorates LIM performance because of different line velocity between inner and outer LIMs. Transient analysis has many problems such as huge model, lots of meshes, very long calculation time, truncation error and so on. This paper has presented a novel technique using equivalent linear rotating model in order to solve these problems and has analyzed parallel type LIM by using the proposed technique. Finally, LIM performance according to independent operating control has been investigated.
This paper is concerned with an experimental investigation about tractive performance of a tracked vehicle on extremely soft soil. A tracked vehicle model with principal dimensions of $0.9\;m(L)\;{\times}\;0.75\;m(B)\;{\times}\;0.4\;m(H)$ and the weight of 167 kg was constructed with a pair of driving chain links driven by two AC-servo motors. The tracks are configured with detachable grousers with variable span. Deep seabed was simulated by means of bentonite-water mixture in a soil bin of $6.0\;m(L)\;{\times}\;3.7\;m(B)\;{\times}\;0.7\;m(H)$. Slip of vehicle and driving torque of motor were measured with respect to experimental variables; grouser span, grouser chevron angle, driving speed, drawbar-pull weight, position of center-of-gravity and weight. $L_8$ orthogonal array is adopted for DOE (Design Of Experiment). The effects of experiment variables on traction performance are evaluated.
