  • In optical disc system, tracking actuator is consisted of coarse actuator and fine tracking actuator. This, two-stage actuator, requires many devices and two servos for large stroke and precisional displacement. These complicate configuration increases moving mass. So dynamic characteristics become bad, that is, sensitivity of high frequency gain decrease. In this paper, frequency performance is willing to be better as so one dimensional tracking actuator is designed. In order to investigate the performance of the proposed tracking actuator, the Bode diagram is plotted with Dynamic analyzer and friction characteristic is explained. Finally, tracking error performance is ins investigated into 0.1 .mu.m resolution with MATLAB simulation.

  • In this paper, we deal with a tracking gain-up controller design problem to control effectively the shake of tracking actuator after a track seek. A minimum tracking gain-up open-loop gain can be calculated by estimating the shake of tracking actuator and a desired transient specification is considered to diminish effectively the shake of actuator. A tracking gain-up controller is designed by considering a robust $H_{\infty}$ control problem with a regional stability constraint. The proposed tracking gain-up controller design method is applied to the track-following system of a DVD recording device and is evaluated through the experimental results.

  • This paper presents a tracking vibration estimation system of the track-following system using a tracking loop gain adjustment algorithm and a genetic algorithm. The algorithms are introduced to estimate accurately the tracking vibration quantity in spite of the uncertainties of the tracking actuator. An estimated actuator model can be found by applying a genetic algorithm. Accordingly, the tracking vibration quantity can be estimated from the measured tracking error, the tracking controller and the estimated actuator model. The proposed tracking vibration estimation method is applied to the track-following system of an optical recording device and is evaluated through the experimental result.

  • Accurate actuator tracking plays an important role in real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) to ensure accurate and reliable experimental results. Frequency-domain evaluation index (FEI) interprets actuator tracking into amplitude and phase errors thus providing a promising tool for quantitative assessment of real-time hybrid simulation results. Previous applications of FEI successfully evaluated actuator tracking over the entire duration of the tests. In this study, FEI with moving window technique is explored to provide post-experiment localized actuator tracking assessment. Both moving window with and without overlap are investigated through computational simulations. The challenge is discussed for Fourier Transform to satisfy both time domain and frequency resolution for selected length of moving window. The required data window length for accuracy is shown to depend on the natural frequency and structural nonlinearity as well as the ground motion input for both moving windows with and without overlap. Moving window without overlap shows better computational efficiency and has potential for future online evaluation. Moving window with overlap however requires much more computational efforts and is more suitable for post-experiment evaluation. Existing RTHS data from Network Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) is utilized to further demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. It is demonstrated that with proper window size, FEI with moving window techniques enable accurate localized evaluation of actuator tracking for real-time hybrid simulation.

  • This paper presents the position tracking control of a laser scanning mirror system in which piezoelectic actuator is incorporated. Using the shear mode of the piezoelectric actuator, angular oscillation of a laser scanning mirror is derived. Torsion bar is rhen designed and attached to the piezoelctric actuator in order to magnify the amplitude generated by the actuator. Finite element modeling and analysis are essntial for designing the piezoelectic actuator. The torsional resonance mode of the piezoelectric actuator is found from the model analysis of the actuator and the mechanical shear is matched with the driving frequency. Transfer function between the electrical excitation and the mechanical shear deformation at resonance frequency is found form the response of the actuator calculated by the finite element analysis and the governing equation of the system is derived from d'Alembert's principle. Tracking control performance for desired trajectory which is, in fact, sinusoidal curve is presented in order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed system.

  • In this paper, mechanism design of optical pickup actuator for fast access is proposed. This actuator is composed of moving magnet type actuator and moving coil type actuator for tracking and fine motion, respectively. Moving magnet type tracking actuator is configurated by two permanent magnets and four air-core solenoids. Additional damper by induced current in tracking actuator can reduce the transient vibration between the coarse seeking servo and fine seeking servo. Variable stiffness can be acquired by applying current to air-core solenoid simply. This actuator can achieve fast access by these additional damper and stiffness. Performance of this actuator is predicted through the FEM, simulation and simple experiment. Settling time for transient vibration is reduced to 14.7% according to simulation result.

  • This paper presents a disturbance accommodating sliding mode control for a quarter-car active suspension using an electro-hydraulic actuator. The electro-hydraulic actuator model is nonlinear and uncertain. The hardware constrains on the actuator prevent high gain in a sliding mode control, which deteriorates the force tracking performance. DAC(Disturbance Accommodating Control) is combined with the sliding mode control to improve the tracking performance. DAC observer estimates the pressure due to the actuator uncertainty. The additional control is designed to compensate the estimated pressure. Simulation results show the improved tracking performance with the Proposed control methods.

  • This paper presents a tracking gain-up controller design method to control effectively the vibration of tracking actuator caused by external shocks and remaining velocity after seek control. A pole placement constraint is considered to assure a desired transient response against the vibration of tracking actuator. A loop gain-up constraint is introduced to hold the tracking gain-up loop gain and control bandwidth within allowable bounds. The pole placement constraint is expressed by a matrix inequality and the loop gain-up constraint is considered as an objective function so that genetic algorithm can be applied. Finally, a tracking gain-up controller is obtained by integrating a genetic algorithm with LMI design approach. The proposed tracking gain-up controller design method is applied to the track-following system of a DVD recording device and its effectiveness is evaluated through the experimental results.

  • This paper presents a position tracking control of a flexible beam using the piezoelectric actuator. This is achieved by implementing both feedforward hysteretic compensator of the actuator and PID feedback controller. The Preisach model is adopted to develop the feedforward hysteretic compensator. In the design of the compensator, estimated displacement of the piezoceramic actuator is used on the basis of the limiting triangle database that results from collecting data of the main reversal curve and the first order ascending curves. Experimental implementation is conducted for position tracking control and performance comparison is made between a PID feedback controller without considering the effect of hysteresis, and a PID feedback controller integrated with the feedforward hysteretic compensator.

  • Nowadays, many studies and researches in data storage have been carried out and storage capacity is increased. But the limitation of storage capacity is happened for several problems. One of them is spot & pit size in optical and magnetic data storage and another is the resolution of actuators. The problems in spot & pit size is covered by new data storage methods- for example, NFR{Near-Field Recoding) system. But the resolution limit of an actuator doesn't follow up the development of spot & pit size. Because of them, we should improve a resolution of an actuator. Especially, in this paper an actuator is studied and designed for NFR(in using SIL(Solid Immersion Lens) system. It is a dual stage actuator, which consists of a Fine actuator and a Coarse actuator, and should desire 100nm accuracy. But, our actuator system only includes tracking mechanism execpt focusing mechanism which is controlled by slider mechanism used in HDD. Its actuating force generation method is VCM(Voice Coil Motor). The Fine actuator is composed of 4-leaf springs and a bobbin wrapped by coil. The Coarse actuator has Coils and 3-Roller bearings.
