  • In recent years, RGM(roller gear mechanism) systems, wherein one of the gears of a meshing gear pair is replaced with pins or rollers, have been reintroduced, which is a consequence of, and therefore a reflection of, the rapid advances made in manufacturing technology. Three RTG(roller track gear) systems for arbitrary path transportation (e.g., L-, O-, U-, and S-shaped tracks) were constructed using two out of three RGM systems, namely, the CRP(cam rack pinion), CRG(cam ring gear), and RPG(roller pinion gear) systems, and are introduced in this paper. We also present three ways to prevent the intersection and non-contact phenomena at the teeth in the vicinity of the conversion point between two joined RGM systems.

  • The critical speed of railway bogie related to the stability of the railway rolling-stock is important. Testing of the dynamic performance of bogie is conducted using a roller rig in a laboratory in place of field testing on track. This roller rig is composed of two rollers equivalent to track and used to test the dynamic characteristics of vehicle. But, the geometrical characteristics of the wheel/roller contact on the roller rig are different from those of the wheel/rail contact because the longitudinal radius of roller is not infinite compared with rail. This difference has influence on the wheelset behavior and the critical speed of bogie. Therefore in this paper, we have studied the behavior of wheelset and bogie on the roller rig for railway bogie testing with the purpose of developing the scaled roller rig. As an analysis results, it has been shown that the critical speed of bogie on the roller rig is slightly lower than that of bogie on track.

  • The Japanese type combine harvester has adopted rubber crawlers for the driving mechanism from first production . However, combine harvesters with movable track rollers in the rubber crawler system have been adopted recently for the purpose of stability at the time of climbing over the footpaths between rice fields, as the results of the machines becoming large. However, the dynamic characteristics of movable track rollers have not been clarified. For this reason, the design of movable track rollers depends on trial and errors. It is known that vibration characteristics of the vehicle with movable track rollers are different from the vibration characteristics of the vehicles with fixed track rollers even though the track roller arrangements are the same. Therefore, the theoretical analyses of movable track rollers must be hurried in order to formulate a reasonable track roller arrangement design. the authors have studied the vibration characteristics of the rubber crawler ve icle with fixed track rollers. in this study, the dynamic model of the vehicle with movable track roller sis compared with the dynamic model of the vehicle with fixed track rollers. Next, motions are simulated to analyze the movable track rollers by expanding the motion equation which were constructed for the dynamic model of the fixed track rollers.

  • The mechanism of the inner resistance in a rubber crawler system has been investigated to reduce the power requirement (Kitano et al. 1994). The rolling resistance of the track roller, which is one of the major inner resistances, was measured for seven different vertical loads. The rolling resistance changed periodically and could be classified into three types. In case of the vertical load less than 500N, the rolling resistance was almost constant. For the vertical load greater than 500N, the maximum value of the rolling resistance increased. Further more in case of the vertical load greater than 1200N, negative resistance appeared. Analytical simulation of the travel resistance based on experimental results and static equilibrium equations derived from three-dimension mechanical model for the rubber crawler system. It was found that the simulation method was carried out to evaluate the travel resistance occurred by the rolling resistance of the track roller. The rolling resistance for each track roller arrangement and effects of the lug phase in the right and left rubber crawler could be estimated quantitatively.

  • Track rollers are the key parts that support the weight applied to the caterpillar track of construction machinery. The operating conditions of construction machinery are harsh; hence, the track rollers exposed to these conditions can experience failures such as oil leakage and breakdown of the machine, because of impacts during driving. The failure of track-rollers has a major effect on the operation of the construction machinery. Therefore, each manufacturer tries to evaluate the performance of their products by conducting a self-test. However, only the vertical loads applied to the track rollers are considered in most of the self-tests. This method has the problem of ignoring the horizontal loads that are applied to the track rollers while rotary driving, and hence it does not create the practical operating condition of the construction machinery. In this study, we have determined the experimental conditions that effectively consider the magnitudes of the vertical and horizontal loads. The results of simulations and experiments conducted to assess the influence of horizontal loads on the failure of track rollers are presented in this paper.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze movement of inline skate players at inline roller skate T300m start so that we can find effective starting movement, and provide basic and scientific materials in improving performance of inline roller skaters for T300m inline roller skating. In doing so, five Korean national representative inline skaters who elected in 2008 Korean National Inline Roller Skating Cup were taped during the cup and analyzed through 3D viewing in terms of their starting movement Conclusions of the analysis were as follows: First, the better the record of starting phase is the shorter average of contact time on track. Second, to improve starting speed, players raised their body just like running instead of lowering them when gliding. players could shorten their strike and moved faster in order to accelerate, and it was more effective to speed up when they quickly switched from running to gliding. Third, the five country-representative players speeded up by bending their knees to a greater degree in order to improve stability. And then the most effective way was believed to minimize track connection of skating at starting in each phase.

  • Roller rigs have been built widely to study and evaluate the dynamic behaviors of railway vehicles, and they have particularly been applied to the development and routine maintenance of high-speed trains. However, there is no roller rig for routine maintenances of high speed train in Korea, although high speed train is running on the lines. Therefore, it is very important issue to check and evaluate the dynamic responses of high speed train after several years of operation. This paper presents a study on the conceptual design and dynamic model to develop the roller rig for the routine maintenances of high speed trains. The roller rig has two independent electronic motor and maximum speed of 350km/h, which can simulate running on straight and curved track. CATIA V5 was used to design the 3D geometrical models and ADAMS was used to verify and analyze the dynamic behaviors of roller rig.

  • A crawler crane, which consists of a lattice boom, a driving system, and a movable vehicle, is widely used on construction sites. The crawler crane often traverses rough terrain at these sites; as a result, an overload limiter needs to be installed on the crane to prevent it from overturning and breaking. In this paper, we studied the distributed load change in relation to boom length and the angle of rotation of the roller that comes in direct contact with the grounded track shoe. First, we developed a 3D model of a crawler crane and meshed it for finite elements. Then, we performed finite element analysis to derive the load on the roller. Finally, we graphed and examined the roller distributed load data of the case according to boom length and rotation angle. By detecting the load on the roller of the crawler crane, we can predict the potential for the crane to overturn before it happens.

  • The performance of the railway bogie is classified into the stability and the steering performance. Testing for the bogie stability is conducted on the roller rig. But testing for the bogie steering performance on test facility is very difficult, so the testing for the vehicle curving performance is conducted on the real curve track. And it is desirable to test on the full scale test rig, but it caused many problems relating to test costs, test time. To overcome these problems, the small scale test rig is actively used in the field of bogie stability. Thus, in this paper, we have studied the scale track to test the bogie steering performance. For this, we designed the 1/5 scale test track equivalent to radius 200 curve and confirmed the validity of the testing for the bogie steering performance on the scale curve track through the testing using 1/5 scale bogie.
