Demersal fishes as second study for the protection-nourishment of fisheries resources in Chinhae Bay were analysed using fish samples collected by a small otter trawler at bimonthly-interval from August, 1997 to June, 1998. Of the 55 species identified, Hexagrammos otakii, Pleuronichthys cornutus, Leiognathus nuchalis, Thrissa koreana, Callionymous lunatus, Acanthogobius flavimanus and Trachurus japonicus predominated in abundance. Especially, Hexagrammos otakii, Pleuronichthys cornutus and Leiognathus nuchalis were always collected at anywhere around a year in the bay. The seasonal fluctuation of number of species is very large as the ranging from 14 species in August to 25, December. The diversity index of individual number and biomass by month and station is 0.68(February)~1.13(October), 0.38(February)~1.06(October) respectively. The indices above mean that the number of species were not distributed broadly over the bay and also concentrated in several species only owing to the local pollutant extent.

This study examines the community characteristics of fish species collected by fyke net from the eastern coastal waters of Yeosu, Korea, during the period from 2020 to 2021. A total of 4,539 fish were sampled and classified into 43 species, 28 families, and 7 orders. The dominant species included Mugil cephalus (14.4%), Konosirus punctatus (10.9%), Lateolabrax japonicus (8.3%), Acanthopagrus schlegelii (7.9%), and Pennahia argentata (7.2%). The diversity index was highest in October (H'=2.888) and lowest in February (H'=2.075). Furthermore, the dominance index was highest in March (DI=0.524) and lowest in December (DI=0.178). Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) revealed that fish communities could be divided into three groups based on Bray-Curtis similarity. Group 1, consisting mainly of species collected from June to October, formed one cluster. Group 2, including winter spawning species such as Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, Clupea pallasii, and Hexagrammos otakii, sampled from November to February, formed another cluster. Group 3, which included species such as Larimichthys polyactis, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, and Sebastes inermis, formed a cluster collected from March to May. The eastern coast of Yeosu is considered a suitable habitat for fisheries resources, including highly economically valuable species, and it is also assumed to be an important spawning and nursery ground for many fish species.

In order to assess electrophysiological responses of fish, a recording of Electroretinogram (ERG) was made on the dark-adapted eyes of anesthetized jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus in the strobe-flash frequency range of 1.7~25 Hz and in the intensity range of 56~415 lx.s. The amplitude change of the ERG is highest at the moment when the strobe light is irradiated and becomes weakest soon after, then gradually increases and becomes stable. The amplitude of the ERG by strobe flash frequencies looked stable tendency after about 12~17 minutes elapsed. During the test duration of 30 minutes, the maximum of amplitude change and stimulation amount over all the tested frequencies was found at 10 Hz. The reduction of the flash intensity caused the decrease in the amplitude and stimulation amount.

Sea experiment for this study was carried out to develop a Trawl Escapement Net(TEN) using net material to improve the survival rate of undersized fishes that escaped from trawls in the Korean southern sea in May and November, 2005. Three kinds of Trawl Escapement Net(TEN) were examined to increase the escapement rate for fishes escaped from the TEN, and total catches in the codend and cover-net were investigated. The main catch species in the experimental fishing trials using a V shape TEN(A type) in May were Korean pomfret(Pampus echinogaster), slimy(Leiognathus nuchalis), gizzard shad(Konosirus punctatus), white croaker(Pennahia argentata) and smelt(Sillago sihama). In the experimental fishing trials using a V shape TEN with a protector for undersized fishes(B type) and a panel shape TEN with a protector(C type) in November, the main catch species were horse mackerel(Trachurus japonicus), sea pike (Sphyraena japonica), large-head hairtail(Trichiurus lepturus), kammal thryssa(Thryssa kammalensis), white croaker(Pennahia argentata), butterfish(Psenopsis anomala) and red gurnard(Lepidotrigla microptera). Most of large-sized fish species like Korean pomfret and Spanish mackerel could not escape through the TEN in the B type and C type. Catches of horse mackerel were highest in the experimental fishing of November and escapement rates for most fish species including horse mackerel were higher in the C type compared with B type.

This study was focused on acoustic scattering characteristics of jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) at frequency 38, 70, and 120 kHz by Kirchhoff-ray mode (KRM) model. The body length (BL) of 16 individuals ranged in 12.2~22.0 cm ($mean{\pm}S.D.$: $17.8{\pm}3.2cm$) and the swimbladder length ranged in 4.2~8.6 cm ($mean{\pm}S.D.$: $6.6{\pm}1.6cm$) and the swimbladder cross section ranged in $1.7{\sim}6.6cm^2$ ($mean{\pm}S.D.$: $3.8{\pm}1.6cm^2$). This result shows that results correlate well between the BL and the length and cross section of swimbladder. The swimbladder angle ranged in $7{\sim}12^{\circ}$ and the maximum TS values ranged in $-16{\sim}-5^{\circ}$ at tilt angle. The averaged TS-to-BL relationship were $TS_{38kHz}=20{\log}_{10}BL-65.33$ ($R^2=0.66$), $TS_{70kHz}=20{\log}_{10}BL-65.90$ ($R^2=0.67$), and $TS_{120kHz}=20{\log}_{10}BL-66.65$ ($R^2=0.65$). These results can be used fundamental data in order to estimate distribution and biomass of jack mackerel by using hydro-acoustic method.

We examined monthly changes in the rate of fishes by-caught by gape net with wings and their immature ratio in the coast of Yeosu and Jindo Island, Korea. A minus correlation between bycatch rate, the ratio of fishes except for anchovy, Engraulis japonicus, to all fishes collected by gape net with wings, and individuals of the collected anchovy was significantly observed, implying that as the anchovy catch decreased and the bycatch rate increased. Immature ratios by the dominant bycatch species during the study is the following; Leiognathus nuchalis was 72.7~99.0%, Sphyraena pinguis was 84.0%, Sardinella zunasi was 90.0%, others (Leptocephalus, Trichiurus lepturus, Ammodytes personatus, Sphyraena pinguis, Trachurus japonicas, Mugil cephalus and Erisphex pottii) were 100.0%. In order to decrease the high bycatch rates of immature fishes in spring and autumn, our study suggested increasing of codend mesh size and developing suitable bycatch reduction devices in a gape net with wings.

In order to estimate the mesh selectivity master curves and the optimum mesh size, experiments were made by the cover net method with the cod-ends of the five different the opening mesh sizes(51.2mm, 70.2mm, 77.6mm, 88.0mm and 111.3mm). After that 163 hauling were performed and there by investigated, on the training vessel Saebada in the Southern Korean Sea and East China Sea from June 1991 to August 1992. In this report, the mesh selectivity master curves were fitted by using logistic function(S=1/(1+exp super(-(aR+b))), R=(L-L sub(0))/(M-M sub(0)) and the optimum mesh sizes were estimated from each master curve. In this case, a and b are the selection parameters, M is the mesh size of each experimental cod-end. L is body length, L sub(0) and M sub(0) is the distance from the coordinate origine to intersection of linear regression between 25% and 50% selection length. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Trachurus japonicus: Mesh selectivity master curve parameters: a and b were 2. 25, -4.73 respectively and optimum mesh size was estimated to be 79.3mm. 2. Trichiurus lepturus: Mesh selectivity master curve parameters: a and b were 0.81, -3.17 respectively and optimum mesh size was estimated to be 64.5mm. 3. Photololigo edulis: Mesh selectivity master curve parameters: a and b were 1.30m, -4.10 respectively and optimum mesh size was estimated to be 89.9mm. 4. Todarodes pacificus: Mesh selectivity master curve parameters: a and b were 1. 35, -3.45 respectively and optimum mesh size was estimated to be 89.4mm.

The aim of this study was to develop a trawl escapement device which can improve the survival rate of young fishes passed through trawl codend. The sea experiments according to the bar space of the device and bar materials were carried out to decide the bar space and device materials in Korean southern sea and off Cheju island. Stainless pipes and MC bars were used to test the efficiency of escapement device materials. Although escapement rates of MC bar for main species were a little higher compare with stainless pipe, the efficiency of device for stainless pipe was better than MC bar. Escapement devices of sort-K type and grid panel type were also compared. Escapement rates of redlip croaker(Pseudosciaena polyactis), blackthroat seaperch(Doederleinia berycoides) and finespotted flounder (Pleuronichthys cornutus) showed 61.7%, 2.0% and 2.7% on the sort-x type and 69.9%, 1.1% and 2.0% for the grid panel type but the difference was little. Fishes under 20mm head width and fishes which swimming speed is so slow compared with body length could not go through well the device. Escapement rates according to the bar space were estimated using grid panel type. The rates of redlip croaker(Pseudosciaena polyactis) for the bar space of 20mm, 25mm, 35mm were increased as 60.3%, 61.0% and 77.8%, and 9.8%, 16.4% and 45.6% for horse mackere1(Trachurus japonicus), respectively.
