The fluorescence ratio method for processing planar laser induced fluorescence(PLIF) data was generalized for quantitative imaging of the injectant mole-fraction in supersonic mixing flowfields. The original fluorescence ratio approach was introduced by Hartfield et al. for tests in a special closed-loop wind tunnel to eliminate the effects of thermodynamic property variations in compressible flowfields and to provide a quantitative means of mole-fraction measurement. However, they implicitly assumed that the tracer molecules were seeded at the same fraction in both main and secondary flows. In the present study, we proposed generalizing the Hartfield method by considering differences in the tracer seeding rates. We examined the generalized method in a mixing flowfield formed by sonic transverse injection into a Mach 1.8 supersonic air stream. The injectant molefraction distribution obtained from PLIF data processed by our new approach showed better agreement with the gas chromatograph than one based on the Hartfield method.
This paper evaluates the performance of ventilation for the removal of indoor pollutants as a function of ventilation rate and the number of occupants in a test room and school classroom. An experimental apparatus consists of a test room, a tracer gas supply system, a gas detector, and a fan for ventilation air supply with a controller. The ventilation performance is evaluated in a step-down method based on ASTM Standard E741-83 using $CO_{2}$ gas as a tracer gas in the test room of 35 $m^{3}.$ For the ventilation air flow rate of 1.0 ACH, a recommended ventilation flow rate of Korea school standard for acceptable indoor air quality in the case of one person, CO_{2}$ gas concentration decreases up to $55{\%}$ within 50 minutes without occupancy and increases up to $75{\%}$ in the case of one occupant. Also indoor air quality at the school classroom is investigated experimentally.
Barred-spiral galaxies possess double patterns: a bar and spiral arms. While their angular speeds play an important role in governing gas dynamical evolution of barred spiral galaxies, there is no direct way to observe them. The Tremaine-Weinberg (TW) method has been one of the most reliable indirect methods to estimate pattern speeds, although it requires a few strict assumptions, notably one that the gas tracer is in a quasi-steady state. In barred-spiral galaxies, however, non-steady gas flows are significant especially when the double patterns have different angular speeds. Using numerical models, we explore the effect of non-steady gas motions on the determination of double pattern speeds based on the TW method. We find that the TW method is accurate within 15% when there is only a single pattern or when double patterns have the same angular speed. When double patterns have different speeds, on the other hand, neglecting the non-steady flows leads to quite large errors (> 30%) in the derived pattern speeds, and severely underestimate the real values for the viewing angle parallel to the bar minor axis. This suggests that one should be cautious when applying the TW method to galaxies with double patterns with different speeds.

A pulsed tracer gas technique is applied to measure distributions of local mean age and residual life time of air in a half-scale experimental chamber. The room airflow patterns are flow-visualized by a Helium bubble generator for three different exhaust locations. A supply slot is located at the top of a right wall, and an exhaust slot is either at bottom-left(Case 1), bottom-right(Case 2), or top-left(Case 3) location. Results show that the distribution of LMA and LMR are different from each other, but both of them are closely related to the airflow pattern in the space. Results on overall room ventilation effectiveness are provided depending upon ventilation airflow rates for three different supply-exhaust configurations.

Indoor air quality has become increasingly important with the increase in time spent in residential environments, impact of external fine dust, yellow dust, and the post-COVID 19 pandemic. Residential mechanical ventilation plays a key role in addressing indoor air quality. The legal standard for residential air changes per hour in Korea is 0.5 ACH. However, there are no standards for the location of supply and return vents. This study atempts to analyze the impact of ventilation performance based on the location of supply and return vents. An experiment was conducted using the CO2 tracer gas concentration decay method in a mock-up house set inside a large chamber to minimize external influences. The experimental results indicated that the commonly used combination of 2 supply and 2 return vents in living room spaces had a lower mean age of air than the combination of 1 supply and 2 return vents. Using multiple supply and return vents had lower mean age of air than using just 1 supply and 1 return vent.

The estimation of the diffusion coefficients of the Gaussian plume model and the release rate by assimilation of tracer-gas measurements on Younggwang site was tested. Diffusion coefficients were modified by linear programming of both the measurements and the simulated using the Gaussian plume model. The application of the modified diffusion coefficients improved the prediction ability of the Gaussian plume model on both 3 km and 8 km arc lines. And, the release rate of tracer gas was estimated using least squares method. The optimal source rate was estimated by minimizing the errors between the measured concentrations and the computed ones by the Gaussian plume model. The obtained release rate showed a good agreement with the real release rate of the Younggwang experiment in 24%.

The tracer gas method has an advantage that can estimate total and local ventilation rate by tracing air flow. However, the field measurement using tracer gas has disadvantages such as danger, inefficiency, and high cost. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate ventilation rate in pig house by using the thermal distribution data rather than tracer gas. Especially, LMA (Local Mean Age), which is an index based on the age of air theory, was used to evaluate the ventilation rate in pig house. Firstly, the field experiment was conducted to measure micro-climate inside pig house, such as the air temperature, $CO_2$ concentration and wind velocity. And then, LMA was calculated based on the decay of $CO_2$ concentration and air temperature, respectively. This study compared between LMA determined by $CO_2$ concentration and air temperature; the average error and root mean square error were 3.76 s and 5.34 s. From these results, it was determined that thermal distribution data could be used for estimation of LMA. Finally, CFD (Computational fluid dynamic) model was validated using LMA and wind velocity. The mesh size was designed to be 0.1 m based on the grid independence test, and the Standard $k-{\omega}$ model was eventually chosen as the proper turbulence model. The developed CFD model was highly appropriate for evaluating the ventilation rate in pig house.

Reaeration phenomena, the physical process of absorption of oxygen from atmosphere, is one of the important parameters of dissolved oxygen simulation in streams. This study was aimed at predicting reaeration coefficients in rural small streams, examining the influence of drop structure on reaeration and the seasonal fluctuation of reaeration coefficients. Reaeration coefficients of five streams including four tributaries of Bokha watershed in Gyeonggi Ichon and Onyang stream in Chungnam Onyang were measured. Constant rate injection (CRI) method using propane and Rhodamine-WT as gas and dye tracer was adopted. Reaeration coefficients ranged between 6.16 and 29.16 reciprocal day, higher than those in USGS database. Prediction equation,$k_2=CV^{0.593}$, was regressed from the measured data at 95% confidence level, with an absolute error of 21.2% and a standard error of 4.0 reciprocal days. Reaeration coefficients of experimental reaches with drop structure showed percentile increases of 42.3 to 159.2 compared to those without it, an indication that drop structure plays an important role on stream reaeration. Taking into consideration the seasonal fluctuation of reaeration coefficients, the values measured during September and October were the highest, mainly due to the removal of aquatic plants. by intensive rainfall during summer.

A study on the mixing process of fuel with ambient gas is necessary to verify combustion process of a diesel engine, especially the mechanism of its ignition delay. In this study, a single shot of diesel spray was injected through either a constant pressure injection system and bypass type injection system. Measurements were made on the flow characteristics of ambient gas and its time history using a hot wire anemometer and a high speed camera. The gas flow direction was determined by a smoke tracer method. (1) The ambient gas of spray flows away at the stagnation part where static pressure value is positive and flows in at the penetration part of a negative value with the steady entrainment length of 0.7. (2) The steady entertainment velocity around the spray in creases from the nozzle tip to the downstream, has the maximum value at the mixing boundary part, and represents zero at the stagnation boundary part after which the stream flows reversely at the stagnation part.
The objective of this research is to analyze the ventilation performance of mechanical ventilation systems to enhance removal efficiency of indoor hamful gases. The ventilation performance is evaluated using a step-down method based on ASTM Standard E741-83. The ventilation performance is evaluated as a function of the ventilation rate and supply/extract locations using a tracer gas ($CO_2$) technique. As a result, the $CO_2$ concentration as a function of time is decayed exponentially and the ventilation performance is found to increase with increased the ventilation rate. The ventilation performance of the second type ventilation system is better than that of the first type or the third type. The ventilation performance without human occupancy increases up to 55% and the ventilation performance with one person increases up to 25% at the supply air of 570Lpm comparing with a natural reduction after one hour in the test chamber. The ventilation performance is better than 15% comparing with natural decay at the supply of 570Lpm in an office room.
