  • Dok island comprises Pliocene volcanic products such as a series of volcanoclastic rocks and lavas ranging in composition from alkali basalts, and trachyandesites to trachytes. Compositional variation of the basaltic rocks can be attributed to fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite. Chemical variations among the trachyandesites are caused by fractionation of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite with minor amphibole, while trachytes are controlled mainly by feldspar fractionation. Incompatible element abundance ratios and chondrite normalized LREE/HREE ratios (e.g., (La/Yb)c: 24.8 to 32.8 for basalts, 15.6 to 31.2 for trachyandesites) suggest that the origins of the basalts and trachyandesites involve both different degrees of partial melting and subsequent fractional crystallization processes. Trace element ratios of the basalts from Dok island are characterized by high Ba/Nb, La/Nb, Ba/Th and Th/U and isotopic ratios (Tasumoto and Nakamura, 1991) that are similar to the EM 1 type of oceanic island basalts such as Gough and Tristan da Cunha basalts.

  • A finite element program for material nonlinear fracture analysis of reinforced concrete shell was developed. This method can be used to trace the load-displacement response and crack propagation through the elastic and inelastic ranges. A layered isoparametric flat finite element considering the coupling effect between the in-plane and the bending action was developed. Mindlin plate theory taking account of transverse shear deformation was used. The validity of the present program was proved by comparing the numerical results with Hedgren's experimental data.

  • A nonlinear finite element method is presented to evaluate the torsional buckling moment and failure of composite laminated cylinders. For the progressive failure analysis, the complete unloading method is used based on the maximum stress failure criteria. An arc-length method is incorporated to trace the postbuckling equilibrium path. Present finite element method is verified by the existing experimental and analytical results. The results of the parametric study show that the torsional buckling moments are sensitive to the geometric change, but are not much affected by the lay-up angle. All cylinders tested numerically show the unstable torsional buckling, and therefore the torsional buckling always leads to the catastrophic failure.

  • The objective of this numerical analysis is to trace the hysteretic behavior of steel angles under very-low-cycle loading test, especially the history and cumulative state of local stress-strain at their critical parts. The computer model is based on a three-dimensional, non-linear analysis by using the finite element program, MSC/NASTRAN, which includes the effects of the material and geometric non-linearities. The analysis was performed as two stage procedures, namely Analysis I and II. The overall behavior from this analysis showed good agreement with the experiment.

  • Manganese is a naturally occurring element which is widespread in the environment. Also, manganese is an essential trace element and plays a key role in important biological reactions catalyzed by enzymes. However, exposure to high levels of manganese can cause toxicity in neurone and inhalation system, also damage in various tissues. We investigated the toxicity induced by manganese compound ($MnCl_2$) in cultured rat cardiomyocytes. Treatment of manganese to cultured cardiomyocyte led to cell death, reactive oxygen species (ROS) increase, and cytosolic caspase-3 activation. The ROS increase was related with the decreased level of glutathione. Expressions of ROS related genes such as heme oxygenase-1, thioredoxin reductase, and NADH quinone oxidase were significantly induced in manganese treated cells. These results suggest that manganese induce oxidative stress and apoptosis in cardiomyocytes, and may be the one of risk factors to cause heart dysfunction in vivo.

  • Selenium(Se) is an essential trace element in the human body. Main function of this element is a catalytic part of antioxidant enzymes that protect cells against the attacks of free radicals that are produced during normal metabolism of the body. Se is also essential for normal function of the immune system and thyroid gland. It also appears to be a key nutrient in counteracting the development of virulence and inhibiting HIV(human immunodeficiency virus) progression to AIDS. It is also required for sperm motility and reduces the depression. Therefore, it is very meaningful that livestock producers generate Se-fortified animal products, such as Se-egg, Se-milk, Se-pork, Se-chicken and Se-beef from the point of producers as well as human heath. However, regulation on Se usage and Se-fortified food/feed is far from being clear in Korea even though Se should be carefully monitored because of its toxicity. Thus, one has to be aware of Se properties when designing Se-fortified animal products.

  • Major and trace elements were analyzed in three core sediments to investigate geochemical characteristics of East Sea sediments and provenance changes during late Quaternary in Ulleung Basin. Comparing with Yellow and South Sea sediments, contents of major elements were generally similar while contents of trace elements were significantly different. Furthermore, within this basin, there were some variabilities in trace element compositions. In the western slope sediments (WS), Mo was enriched over 6 times as much as other sites. On the other hand, Zr, Nb, Hf and Ta were enriched in basin sediments (Basin), and Ca and Cs were enriched in southern slope sediments (SS). After excluding elements derived from biogenic, authigenic and diagenetic origins, the lithogenic elements (K, Ti, Cs, Zr, Nb, Hf and Ta) could be classified into three groups from the comparison of element/Al ratios among cores. The first group consisted of elements (K and Ti) that showed the nearly similar element/Al ratios among three cores. The second group contained Cs which showed significant difference between two slope sediments. The third group elements (Zr, Nb, Hf and Ta) showed highly enriched in basin relative to both slope areas. The depth profiles of metal/Al ratios in basin sediments provided the following interpretation for the compositions of sediment and their variation. From 10,000 yr B.P. to 7,000 yr B.P. two lithogenic components (volcanic ashes and western slope sediments) were mixed and deposited in the basin. After 7,000 yr B.P., however, southern slope sediments were mixed with volcanic ashes and deposited in basin area. This event of source change is nearly close to inflow period of the Tsushima Warm Current to Ulleung Basin. Thus, it might be suggested that element geochemistry in Ulleung basin sediment indicate the change of current system in the study area.

  • This paper aims to give a summary and review of the research trend about subjects of Asian Dust (AD) storm in the last three decades. The AD research was focused on classification of synoptic scale data and finding inflow pathway in early stage. Recently, new approaches have been made to explain chemical composition, transportation, transboundary movement reaction of AD, using satellite data, 3D modeling, the aerosol time of flight mass spectroscopy, etc. During AD events, a large amount of dust particles flow into Korea and Japan from AD source areas, and they are highly likely to be mixed with toxic substances when air mass contained AD particles pass over seriously polluted areas. We concluded that, considering that AD events were classified into two cases according to the source area and pathway, the concentrations of crustal components did not increase at the initial stage of AD events, Whereas ammonium-sulfate, trace metal element, OC, EC relatively increased in the early stage. This explains AD events have the possibility of being accompanied with polluted air mass or particles. Also, we further need to compare and summarize the results of AD studies which already have been conducted, and prepare strategies for particle management, particularly for Black Carbon (BC) and Brown Carbon (BrC) which are considered to induce climate change effects.

  • In order to investigate the relative mobility (RM) of dissolved elements during processes controlling major and trace element content, the concentrations of major, minor and trace elements were reviewed from the previous data of $CO_2$-rich waters and granites from Kangwon Province. The relative mobility of elements dissolved in $CO_2$-rich waters is calculated from $CO_2$-rich water/granite ratio with normalizing by sodium. The results show that gaseous input of magmatic volatile metals into the aquifer is negligible in this study area, being limited by cooling of the rising fluids. Granite leaching by weakly acidic, $CO_2$-charged water is the overwhelming source of metals. Poorly mobile element (Al) is preferentially retained in the solid residue of weathering, while alkalis, alkaline earth and oxo-hydroxo anion forming elements (especially As and U) are mobile and released to the aqueous system. Transition metals display an intermediate behavior and are strongly dependent on either the redox conditions (Fe and Mn) or solid surface-related processes (adsorption or precipitation) (V, Zn and Cu).

  • The main purpose of the study was to clarify the properties of individual particles collected at each behavior space of a factory worker. The samplings of size-segregated ($PM_{2.1-1.1}$ and $PM_{4.7-3.3}$) indoor particles were conducted at three different behavior spaces of a factory worker who is engaged in an auto parts manufacturing plant (i.e., his home, his work place in factory, and his favorite restaurant). Elemental specification (i.e., relative elemental content and distribution in and/or on individual particles) was performed by a micro-PIXE system. Every element detected from the coarse particulate matters of home was classified into three groups, i.e., a group of high net-counts (Na, Al, and Si), a group of intermediate net-counts (Mg, S, Cl, K, and Ca), and a group of minor trace elements (P, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb). The results of EF for $PM_{4.7-3.3}$ in home indicated that several heavy metals were generated from the sources within the house itself. An exceptional feature shown in the individual particles in workplace is that Cr, Mn, and Co were clearly detected in both fine and coarse particles. Cluster analysis suggested that the individual coarse particles ($PM_{4.7-3.3}$) collected at the indoor of factory were chemically heterogeneous and they modified with sea-salt, mineral, and artificially derived elements. The principal components in individual coarse particles collected at restaurant were sea-salt and mineral without mixing with harmful trace elements like chromium and manganese. Compared to the indoor fine particles of home and restaurant, many elements, especially, Cl, Na, Cr, Mn, Pb, and Zn showed overwhelmingly high net-counts in those of factory.
