Some Trace Metals and their Ratios in Aloe (Aloe vera L.), Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. var. tuberculatus Gabaj.) and Sponge-gourd (Luffa cylindrica L.) in Korea

  • Aloe (Aloe vera L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. var. tuberculatus Gabaj.) and sponge.gourd (Luffa cylindrica L.) are well utilized in Asian countries as traditional medicines and cosmetics, or foods. And we carried out an experiment to see if there are some specific ratios among trace metals on the plants. Though the metal concentrations varied significantly depending on the sampling periods, aloe gel is high in iron (Fe) and calcium (Ca). Cucumber fruit juice is also high in iron (Fe) and potassium (K). Sponge.gourd sap contains a high amount of zinc (Zn) and calcium (Ca). The uses of the previous 3 plant parts are considered to have some relations to their different ratios and of their trace metals.

The strategies for the supplementation of vitamins and trace minerals in pig production: surveying major producers in China

  • Objective: Adequate vitamin and trace mineral intake for pigs are important to achieve satisfactory growth performance. There are no data available on the vitamin and trace mineral intake across pig producers in China. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the amount of vitamin and trace minerals used in Chinese pig diets. Methods: A 1-year survey of supplemented vitamin and trace minerals in pig diets was organized in China. A total of 69 producers were invited for the survey, which represents approximately 90% of the pig herd in China. Data were compiled by bodyweight stages to determine descriptive statistics. Nutrients were evaluated for vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, niacin, folic acid, biotin, choline, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, selenium, and iodine. Data were statistically analyzed by functions in Excel. Results: The results indicated variation for supplemented vitamin (vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, niacin, and choline) and trace minerals (copper, manganese, zinc, and iodine) in pig diets, but most vitamins and trace minerals were included at concentrations far above the total dietary requirement estimates reported by the National Research Council and the China's Feeding Standard of Swine. Conclusion: The levels of vitamin and trace mineral used in China's pig industry vary widely. Adding a high concentration for vitamin and trace mineral appears to be common practice in pig diets. This investigation provides a reference for supplementation rates of the vitamins and trace minerals in the China's pig industry.

시판한우 부산물 중 미량금속 함량의 비교조사 (Study on Comparison of the Amount of Trace Metals in Edible Viscera)

  • This study investigated the contamination of trace metals on edible visceras : tongue, intestine, lung, testis, gira, blood, liver, stomach, and kidney. The edible visceras were selected at random from ten markets in Seoul. The edible visceras underwent freeze drying prior to analysis. The contents of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, magnases, molybdenum, lead, and zinc were detected by ICP(Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrophotometry). The results showed that the levels of trace metals in all the samples fall within the tolerance limit and cadmium in lung tended to be high(>0.1 ppm). Therefore, we may study and investigate continuously on the food contamination of heavy metals for the public health.

모유의 철분,아연 및 구리 함량과 모유 영양아의 모유와 미량원소 섭취량에 관한 연구 (A Study on Iron, Zinc and Copper Contents in Human Milk and Trace Element Intakes of Breast-fed Infants)

  • 한국인 수유부 21명 의 모유에 함유된 철분, 아연, 및 구리의 함량을 경시적으로 초유부터 12주의 성숙유에 이르기까지 일정한 간격으로 세분하여 비교 검토하고, 생후 6~7주 된 14명의 모유영양아에 대한 1일 모유 및 미량원소 섭취량을 조사하였다. 모유에 함유된 이 세가지 미량원소들의 함량은 수유기간에 따라 유의적으로 감소 하였으며 모유의 평균 철분 함량은 초유에서 0.33$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, 이행유에서 0.31$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ 그리고 성숙유에서 0.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$이었고, 아연 농도는 각각 4.15$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, 3.51$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$과 2.8$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$이었으며 초유와 이행유 그리고 성숙유의 평균 구리 농도는 각각 0.21$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$, 0.34$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ 및 0.26$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$로 측정 되었다. 모유영양아의 평균 1일 모유 섭취량은 768g이었으며 모유를 통한 미량원소의 1일 평균 섭취량은 철분 0.19mg, 아연 2.10mg, 그리고 구리는 0.15mg 이었다. 앞으로 수유기간에 따른 모유내 미량원소 함량의 감소가 영아의 성장 발달 및 급식과 어떻게 관련되는가에 관한 연구와, 모유 영양아와 인공 영양아의 체내 미량윈소 영양 상태 비교가 이루 어져야 하겠으며 한국인 영아를 위한 영양 권장량은 성장이 양호한 모유 영양아의 영양소 섭취량을 기준하여 책정하는 것이 바람직 하다고 본다.

아연도금층의 조직 및 물성에 미치는 미량금속원소(Mg-Fe-X)의 복합첨가의 영향(II) (Effect of Trace Metallic Additives of Mg-Fe-X on Microstructure and Properties of Zn Electrodeposits)

  • The effect of trace metallic additives on microstructure, glossiness and hardness of Zinc electrodeposits was investigated by using sulfate bath and flow cell system. The preferred orientation of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe additives was (10$\ell$)+(002) mixed texture, while that of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-Cr additives was ( $10\ell$). The preferred orientation of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-X(X:Ni,Co) additives changed from ($10\ell$)+(002) to ($10\ell$) with increasing Mg additive from 5 to 10 g/$\ell$. The surface morphology of the Zinc deposits was closely related to the preferred orientation of the deposits. The glossiness of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe additives was similar to that of pure Zn deposit. The glossiness of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-X(X:Ni,Cr) additives was lower than that of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe additives, while that of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-Co additives was higher than that of Zn-Mg-Fe deposits. The hardness of Zn deposits with Mg-Fe-X(Ni,Co,Cr) increased with current density and amount of Mg additive. Hardness of Zn deposits was decreased and increased in comparison with Zn-Mg-Fe deposits for Mg-Fe-Co and Mg-Fe-Cr additives, respectively.

  • Minerals are individual of the components of foods and are not produced in the body but essential for best possible health. Several essential metals are vital for the appropriate performance of various enzymes, transcriptional factors and proteins that are essential in various biochemical paths. Metals like zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn) are cofactors of hundreds of enzymes. Zn is involved in the synthesis and secretion of insulin from the pancreatic ${\beta}-cells$. Chromium (Cr) increases the insulin receptors activity on target tissues, mainly in muscle cells. Insulin hormone is required to maintain the blood glucose amount in normal range. Continual increase of blood serum glucose level leads to marked chronic hyperglycemia or diabetes mellitus. Deficiency of insulin or its resistance, blood glucose level exceeds the upper limit of the common range of 126 mg/dl. Poor glucose control and diabetes changes the levels of essential trace elements such as Zn, Mg, Mn, Cr, iron etc. by rising urinary excretion and their related decrease in the blood. The aim of this article to discusses the important roles of essential trace elements in particular perspective of type 2 diabetes.

Effects of proteinate complex zinc on growth performance, hepatic and splenic trace elements concentrations, antioxidative function and immune functions in weaned piglets

  • Objective: To assess the effects of proteinate complex zinc (PC-Zn) on growth performance, antioxidative function, trace element concentrations and immune function in weaned piglets. Methods: Three hundred newly weaned barrows ($Duroc{\times}Landrace{\times}Yorkshire$), 28 days of age, were randomly allotted to 3 dietary groups of 5 replicate pens per group for 4 weeks of feeding. Experimental diets were: i) zinc deficient diet (ZnD, 24 mg/kg Zn supplementation from $ZnSO_4$), ii) inorganic Zn diet supplemented with 120 mg/kg of Zn from Zn sulfate ($ZnSO_4$), and iii) organic Zn diet supplemented with 120 mg/kg of Zn from PC-Zn. The body weight of pigs were recorded at the beginning, at the middle and at the end of the experiment, and the amount of feed supplied each day was recorded. Five barrows from each dietary treatment group were selected to be anesthetized and euthanized at the end of the trial to determine the Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn concentrations, the hepatic metallothionein content, the levels of methane dicarboxylic aldehyde (MDA), Mn, and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the spleen, the levels of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-10, interferon $(IFN)-{\gamma}$, $CD3^+$, $CD4^+$, and $CD8^+$ T lymphocyte. Results: The accumulation of Zn in the spleen, levels of SOD, GSH-Px, IL-4, IL-10, the proportions of $CD3^+$ and $CD4^+$ T lymphocyte, and the ratio of $CD4^+/CD8^+$ T lymphocyte were increased by organic Zn supplementation compared to ZnD, while the levels of MDA, $IFN-{\gamma}$, and proportion of $CD8^+$ T lymphocyte were lowered. Conclusion: These findings indicate that Zn can improve the antioxidant potential and immune functions of weaned piglets.

Application of Synergistic Solvent Extraction by Formation of Ternary Complex for Determination of Trace Zn(II) in Water Samples

  • The application of a synergistic solvent extraction by the formation of ternary complex with pyrocatechol violet (PV) and benzalkonium chloride (BC) was studied for determination of trace Zn(II) in water samples. The pH of sample solution and the amount of PV and BC added were optimized for the formation of the stable complex, a proper solvent was selected for the effective extraction, and the concentration of nitric acid was fixed for the back extraction of the complex from the solvent. After the ionic strength of 100 mL sample solution was adjusted to 0.1 M by adding NaCl and the pH was fixed at 9 with a carbonate buffer, 1.0 mL of 2% PV solution was added to form Zn(II)-PV complex then the Zn(II)-PV/BC ternary complex was made by adding 1.0 mL of 10% BC solution. The ternary complex was extracted into 10 mL of MIBK. And the ternary complex was back-extracted with 10 mL of 1.0 mol/L nitric acid to determine Zn(II) by a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (flame-AAS). The interference of concomitant ions on the extraction of Zn(II) was investigated. This procedure was applied to the analysis of three real samples such as Dalbang-dam water, laboratory tap water and Jungnajin seawater. The recoveries of Zn(II) in spiked samples were 86.58-104.1%.

  • 킬레이트제로 zinc diethyldithiocabamate $[Zn(DDC)_2]$를 사용하여 해수중 흔적량 무기수은(Ⅱ)의 용매추출에 관하여 연구하였다. $Zn(DDC)_2$는 추출과정동안 산성 수용액에서 DDC-의 안정도를 유지하여 준다. 본 실험실에서 NaDDC와 $ZnSO_4$로부터 $Zn(DDC)_2$를 합성하였다. 흔적량 수은을 pH 3.0의 해수 100ml로부터 0.05 M $Zn(DDC)_2$의 클로포름 용액 10ml에 5분간 흔들어 추출하였다. 그리고 클로로포름 유기상으로부터 $Hg(DDC)_2$를 각 3% (v/v)인 질산과 염산의 1:1혼합산 용액 10ml에 25분간 흔들어 역추출하였다. 역추출된 수은을 냉증기 원자흡수 분광광도법으로 정량하였다. 본 추출과정을 해수중 수은의 정량에 응용하였고, 일정량의 수은을 첨가한 해수시료에서 90.0%와 93.3%의 회수율을 보여주었다.

해수중 카드뮴, 구리, 납, 아연 및 수은의 원자흡광정량법 (DETERMINATION OF CADMIUM, COPPER, LEAD, ZINC AND MERCURY IN SEA WATER BY ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROPHOTOMETRY)

  • 해수중 ppb 정도의 카드뮴, 구리, 납, 아연 및 수은 정량을 위한 용매추출-원자흡광법 및 환원기화법에 의한 무염원자흡광법을 검토했다. 용매추출 때의 최적 pH는 pH4-7였으며 용매로는 MIBK가 가장 효율이 좋았으며 킬레이트제로는 DDTC가 APDC보다 추출율 및 기타 조건이 유리했다. 즉 $1\iota$ 해수를 사용하여 pH4-5에서 DDTC-MIBK로 추출하여 아세칠렌-공기불꽃 중에 흡입시켜 흡광도를 측정하는 방법으로 해수시료를 분석한 결과 정밀저는 표준편차로 카드뮴 0.058 ppb, 구리 0.084 ppb, 납 0.44ppb였다, 아연은 $1\iota$ 시수를 사용했을 때는 블랭크값이 녀무 크게 나오고 그 정밀도가 극히 좋지 않았다. 시수량을 200ml로 했을 때는 비교적 정밀도가 좋았으며 표준편차로서 2.49 ppb였다. 수은은 시수 500ml을 황산-과망간산칼리움 분해법으로 분해시켜 염화제1주석으로 수은을 환원기화시켜 흡광도를 측정했으며 그 정밀도는 0.005 ppb였다. 이상의 방법으로 측정할 수 있는 각 금속의 정량감도는 카드뮴 $0.08\;ppb/\%$, 구리$0.15\;ppb/1\% $, 납 $0.6\;ppb/1\%$, 아연 $1.2\;ppb/1\%$, 수은 $0.01\;ppb/1\%$였다. 채수후 분석시까지의 시수보관에 따른 각 금속의 농도변화는 시수$1\iota$에 대해 질산 10ml 정도 넣어 pH 1.5 부근으로 하며 플리에칠렌병에서 보관한 결과 카드뮴, 구리, 납, 수은은 30일정도 까지는 안정하였으며 아연은 불규칙한 심한 변동을 보였다.
