The development of the Surrey Research Park by the University of Surrey is an addition to a number of existing strategies to collaborate with industry that it has developed over its 120 year history. The potential to undertake this development was based on owning a substantial land holding that the University acquired when the Borough Council for the town of Guildford invited the University to relocate from Battersea in London to its new location in 1966. Initial plans for the Park in 1979 were accelerated in 1981 in response to plans by the then government to reduce funding for Higher Education in the UK. Beyond a broad master plan for the site that was based on topography and access to the site the plans that were developed were based on a survey of 100 companies that were deemed to be in the target market for the site and a review of the other 7 science parks that were being developed in the UK in 1981. The findings from this proved to be important in developing the master plan for the site. Another important influence on the project was the objectives that were defined for the 3 stakeholders in the project of the University, the tenant companies and the planning authority relate to economic development, a competitive advantage of tenant companies, knowledge transfer, the profile for the University and the capacity to generate income proved to be a valuable framework on which to develop a master plan. These details were underpinned by five objectives which served the three stakeholders in the site. Those for the University included commercial potential, knowledge transfer and image and reputation; those for the town primarily related to economic development and the plan was to help tenants gain a competitive advantage by locating on the site. In addition a number of success indicators were defined for the project against which to measure performance and have remained as a useful set of parameters on which to base the assessment of the performance of the site. In combination with these indicators a further analysis deals with the success factors that are considered as important in influencing performance. The paper sets details the history of the park and covers the success indicators and factors and reviews these in the context of the original objectives for the site.

The purpose of this study is to review the meaning of the self-containment of new town from the viewpoint of ESSD and to derive some policy implications for enhancing the level of the self-containment. The case study area selected for empirical research is Ilsan in Seoul Metropolitan Area. As the self-containment of a new town is related to the energy consumption in transport and the increment of air pollution, the behavioral analysis of residents using self-contained facilities is one of the important subjects in ESSD. So, in this paper the characteristics of the land use plan and the level of self-containment in Ilsan new town are analyzed with regard to the supply of schools, jobs, goods and services. The empirical study shows that the degree of self-containment in the supply of jobs has low score(21.8%) because Ilsan new town is involved in the region in which the provision of a variety of employment opportunities is restricted by the metropolitan arrangement plan. The degree of self-containment in the supply of schools and goods has high score(94.0% and 89.4%). But there is a time lag in the supply of public services. It is suggested that new towns must be located remote from Seoul to avoid the restrictions by the metropolitan arrangement plan. To bring up the self-contained facilities, it is desirable to draw up a plan of attracting the tertiary sector in new town such as office industry. And, as the office industry prefers to locate in CBD of central city, it is necessary to give financial incentives to relocate the industry to new town. The establishment of an office complex for the pursuit of agglomeration economy would be an appropriate alternative. To solve the problem of time lag in the supply of self-contained facilities, it is necessary to prepare the synchronized development plan of housing and convenience facilities, especially schools and public services.
In modern Asia major cities had same problem with lack of affordable housing for families. So they had to concentrate to the mass supply of housing and made some physical counter effects like high density of cities, limitation of parking space. Also people who lived in those cities could suffer from broken traditional community culture. To rebuild traditional community and increase land usage, Block housing is suggested as a new kind of multi-family housing for old town redevelopment. Now some governments are trying to make urban code to give some initiative for new block housing development in old city blocks. They expect this new housing type can help to solve serious problems like lack of parking area, green space and context of block. Also they hope that block housing development can help to increase safety of town and reduce cost of development. The purpose of this study is to review the establishment and development process of Block Housing and to confirm the aspect which has been changed with urban organization together. Also this study tried to find out the intentional characteristics of similarities and differences with comparison of Korea and Japan. And as a result we could find critical physical viewpoint, and provide considerations for future study and plan. Several cases of block housing in Korea and Japan were reviewed for comparative study and Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) survey was examined to find satisfaction factors and problems which were expected to improved.

Many people think, in common that An expansion toward outer city is a development, and it can be a general trends in a new development in a growing city. But We can see many case which moving of a public building are considerate as a core element to promote the new development towards outer city, and that is a negative element of slum in central area and community making. There are many aspects to pursue sustainable urban structure of in a city, and public building is a very important element to manage deteriorate central area from social slum in a old town. In this presentation, three project, Local Authority office of Chonnam province, Kwangju Station, and Hyper Urbanity, and it shows sustainable concept of the public building as a core in a city development. The effect of the projects are expected sustainable development and community in terms of social, cultural and historical aspects.
Compared to Early Chosun Dynasty, the spatial structure of most local Eupseongs of Korea had a standardized change with the expansion and spread of the Rye-hak(禮學:a study of confucius Rite). Meanwhile in the process of rebuilding Eupseongs there was a tendency of relocation of the local government offices(官衙) and its attached facilities in terms of functions and use. Although it was PyeongSanseong Miryang Eupseong had an unreasonable spatial structure locating Gaeksa(客舍; accommodation house for visitors) in the middle of the local government office complex, and Dongheon(東軒;main office building) in the east of it before the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. However with the reorganization of spatial Structure of local Eupseongs after the Japanese invasion Gaeksa was moved to the foot of Adongsan where commanded a fine view of river. Dongheon was moved to the center of Eupseong for the effective management of its auxiliary organizations. It was because road system and administrative efficiency had a serious effect on deciding the location of the local government office and its attached facilities. After the Japanese invasion Hyangchoeng(鄕廳), having been out of Eupseong, also was moved to the independent location within Eupseong separate from Dongheon and Gaeksa. It seemed to take into account the autonomy of Hyangchoeng. Dongheon, Gaeksa, and Hyangchoeng which are the crucial facilities of Milyang Eupseong were arranged at each angular point of big triangle. In order to enhance the administative efficiency, the attached administrative facilities were arranged surrounding Dongheon and Hyangchoeng. The spatial structure of Milyang Eupseong in the late Choseon dynasty was of great difference from that of uniformly organized system of early Choseon Period. It was because the development of administrative function, the pursuit of efficiency, and commercial progress had a great impact on the change of urban space.
42 compounds such as ester, sulfonyl ester, phosphoyl ester and ether derivatives of 4-isopropylphenol (I) and 2-isopropylphenol (II) were synthesized. These derivatives were identified by IR, GC/MS and $^{1}H-NMR$ spectra. Their in vitro antifungal activities were tested against 10 plant pathogenic fungi. Among them, several compounds showed potent in vitro antifungal activity. The selected compounds showing potent in vitro antifungal activity were tested for their in vivo antifungal acitvities against 5 plant diseases such as rice blast, rice sheath blast, cucumber anthracnose, cucumber gray mold and tomato late blight. As a result, 2-isopropylphenyl piperonyloate (II-7a) showed a potent in vivo antifungal activity against cucumber anthracnose and tomato late blight, 4-isopropylphenyl 4-methoxybenzenesulfonate (I-6b) effectively inhibited the development of rice blast.
This study estimates baseline greenhouse gas emissions from transport sector when a new town is developed. It has adopted a general greenhouse gas estimation model developed by Schipper, celine, Roger(2000) for the estimation, and showed how various transport related statistics can be utilized in detail. Particularly, it has produced unit greenhouse gas emission factor per vehicle types, vehicle-km, and trip-km. To evaluate effects of greenhouse gas reduction policies, it has calculated how much emissions will be reduced from bicycle promotion. It has turned out that about 369 thousand tons of carbon dioxide will be emitted from transport sector once the 1st Geomdan New Town is developed in Incheon metropolitan city. If the policy of bicycle promotion can attract people to use bicycle as much as 5% of total trips, then it can reduce about 1,869 tons of carbon dioxide.
As an ongoing research program for the development of environmentally friendly new herbicide, several hydantoin derivatives 5a - 5i possessing amide subgroup were synthesized and shown to have interesting herbicidal activities exhibiting symptoms as Protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase inhibitor under postemergence upland greenhouse screening. Among derivatives tested, compound 5h showed superior herbicidal activity against upland problem weed, digitaria sanguinalis and aeschynomene indica to reference compound fluthiacet-methyl.
The progressive collapse phenomenon is generally regarded as dynamic. Due to the impracticality of nonlinear dynamic computations for practitioners, an interest arises for the development of equivalent static pushover procedures. The present paper proposes a methodology to identify such a procedure for sudden column removals, using energetic evaluations to determine the pushover loads to apply. In a dynamic context, equality between the cumulated external and internal works indicates a vanishing kinetic energy. If such a state is reached, the structure is sometimes assumed able to withstand the column removal. Approximations of these works can be estimated using a static computation, leading to an estimate of the displacements at the zero kinetic energy configuration. In comparison with other available procedures based on such criteria, the present contribution identifies loading patterns to associate with the zero-kinetic energy criterion to avoid a single-degree-of-freedom idealisation. A parametric study over a family of regular steel structures of varying sizes uses non-linear dynamic computations to assess the proposed pushover loading pattern for the cases of central and lateral ground floor column failure. The identified quasi-static loading schemes are shown to allow detecting nearly all dynamically detected plastic hinges, so that the various beams are provided with sufficient resistance during the design process. A proper accuracy is obtained for the plastic rotations of the most plastified hinges almost independently of the design parameters (loads, geometry, robustness), indicating that the methodology could be extended to provide estimates of the required ductility for the beams, columns, and beam-column connections.
This paper is one of Korean towns in the period of Korean-Modern, which play an important role in shaping the present cities of Korea. In the concrete, this study deals with the urban form of the Japanese Concession at Womsan where is the second Open Port in Korea. By the way, both of the Open Port and the Concession were the town that not exist before the period of Korean-Modern, and the town that symbolize the historical characters of the period of Korean-Modern. On this study, it is intended to analyze the situations of establishment, the process of the urban form, and the meanings of Concession, from 1880 to 1910, the period when had been kept up the nature of the Concession mainly. The Japanese Concession at Wonsan was urged it's establishment by Japan Government that is conscious of the purpose of foreign trade and military importance. But, it was slow in progress of developing town because of the distance from the capital 'Han Yang', today we called it Seoul, and lack of the background towns. However, after both the wars of 1895 and 1904, Japanese residents were incresed and urban aspects were advanced. The urban form of Japanese Concession was devided two territories by the natural circumstances, so that was made a difference on the period of the development. And finally, it had double axis on the form of district. Furthermore, by increasing of residence, it was occured that new Japanese resident arwa was occupied and expanded illegally between the road which is toward the existing Korean village 'Womsan-Jin(元山津)'. This indeed is the illegal extension of the Japanese Concession at Wonsan. Conclusively, Concession fumed out the primary factor that Korean towns are altered with the heterogeneous ones in the period of Korean-Modern.
