  • The main goal was to evaluate effectiveness of a modified TSE sequence compared with DIR (double inversion recovery) sequence in acquisition of fast flow brain vessel images using signal void effect. 32 healthy volunteers (10 men and 22 women; mean age of 31 years; ranging between 28-43 years) who underwent black blood DIR sequence (group A) and the modified TSE sequence (group B) were enrolled in our study. Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR) of the internal carotid arteries' lumen were compared in T1 and T2 weighted images for both group A and B. The images obtained from group B showed lower SNR values in internal carotid artery than the group A in both of the T1 and T2 weighted images (11.49% and 13.66% respectively). While the CNR values were higher in the group B than the group A in both of the T1 and T2 weighted images (8.69% and 7.55 % respectively). The qualitative score of all categories were not significantly different between the two groups. Furthermore approximately 49% of the total scan time was reduced from group B. Our study is to shorten the scanning time and minimize the inconveniences of the patients in acquisition of the black blood images of brain by using the signal void effect in the modified TSE technique while keeping the diagnostic value of the test.

  • In order to analyze the tensile deformation characteristics of laser welded tailored blanks. laser welded blanks of different thikness and strength combinations were prepared and tensile tests were done. The tensile elongation along the direction perpendicular to weld line of laser welded blanks was reduced as increasing the deformation restraining force (strength X thicknes) ratio between two welded sheets and fracture occurred at weaker side of base sheets if void ration of welded sheets and fracture occurred at weaker side of base sheets if void ratio of weld section was less than 45% The tensile elongation along weld line reached above 90% of the elongation of base material if welding was done perfectly. Total elongation along the direction perpendicular to weld line was able to be predicted by force equilibrium and power law behavior of base sheets and it was related with the deformation of stronger sheet and formability of weaker side.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To date, sodium intake has been evaluated based on spot urine instead of 24-hour (hr) urine collection. Nevertheless, the optimal method for assessing daily sodium intake remains unclear. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Fifteen male (age 32.7 ± 6.5 years) participants were offered 3 meals with a total of 9-10 g salt over 24 hours, and 24-hr urine was collected from the second-void urine of the first day to the first-void urine of the second day. Twenty-four-hr urinary sodium (24UNa) was estimated using Tanaka's equation and the Korean formula, and spot urine Na, potassium (K), chloride (Cl), urea nitrogen (UN), creatinine (Cr), specific gravity (SG) and osmolality (Osm) were measured. The ratios of urinary Na to other parameters were calculated, and correlations with total measured 24UNa were identified. RESULTS: Average 24-hr urine volume was 1,403 ± 475 mL, and measured 24UNa was 143.9 ± 42.1 mEq (range, 87.1-239.4 mEq). Measured 24UNa was significantly correlated with urinary Na/UN (r = 0.560, P < 0.01), urinary Na/Osm (r = 0.510, P < 0.01), urinary Na/Cr (r = 0.392, P < 0.01), urinary Na/K (r = 0.290, P < 0.01), 24UNa estimated using Tanaka's equation (r = 0.452, P < 0.01) and the Korean formula (r = 0.414, P < 0.01), age (r = 0.548, P < 0.01), weight (r = 0.497, P < 0.01), and height (r = 0.393, P < 0.01) in all spot urine samples. Estimated 24UNa based on the second-void spot urine of the first day tended to be more closely correlated with measured 24UNa than were estimates from the other spot urine samples. The significant parameters correlated with the second-void urine of the first day were urinary Na/K (r = 0.647, P < 0.01), urinary Na/Cr (r = 0.558, P < 0.05), and estimated 24UNa using Tanaka's equation (r = 0.616, P < 0.05) and the Korean formula (r = 0.588, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Second-void urine is more reliable than first-void urine for estimating 24UNa. Urinary Na/K in the second-void urine on the first day is significantly correlated with 24UNa. Further studies are needed to establish the most reliable index and the optimal time of urine sampling for predicting 24UNa.

  • In comparison with ordinary or heavy-weight concrete, light-weight air void concrete has the good aspects in optimizing super tall structure systems for the process of design considering wind load and seismic load by lightening total dead load of buildings and reducing natural resources used. Light-weight air void concrete has excellent properties of heat and sound insulating due to its high amount porosity of air voids. So, it has been used as partition walls and the floor of Ondol which is the traditional Korean floor heating system. Under the condition of which the supply of light-weight aggregates are limited, the development of light-weight concrete using air voids is highly required in the aspects of reduced manufacturing prices and mass production. In this study, we investigated the physical properties and thermal behaviors of specimens that applied different mixing ratios of foaming agent to evaluate the possibility of use in the structural elements. We proposed the estimating equation for compressive strength of each mix having different ratio of foaming agent. We also confirmed that the density of cement matrix is decreased as the mixing amount of foaming agent increase up to 0.6% of foaming agent mixing ratio which was observed by SEM. Based on porosity and compressive strength of control mortar without foaming agent, we built the estimating equations of compressive strength for mortars with foaming agent. The upper limit of use in foaming agent is about 0.6% of the binder amount. Each air void is independent, and size of voids range from 50 to $100{\mu}m$.

  • This study was carried out to improve our understanding about the influence of silt content on the stress-strain of sand under cyclic loading. Soil specimens were prepared by wet-tamping method as same void ratio and specimen's silt contents on total weights was changed from 0% to 20%. Also, effects of the silt contents on the stress-strain response were studied at different anisotropic consolidation ratio, Kc=1.0, 1.5, 2.0 condition. As a result, cyclic shear strength decreased as silt contents increased in same stress ratios. In same silt contents, cyclic shear strength increased as Kc increased in lower silt contents, but in higher silt contents, it had reverse results.

  • Soils are generally classified as fine-grained or coarse-grained depending on the percentage content of the primary constituents. In reality, soils are actually made up of mixed and composite constituents. Soils primarily classified as fine-grained, still consists of a range of coarse particles as secondary constituents in between 0% to 50%. A laboratory scale model test was conducted to investigate the influence of coarse particles on the physical (e.g., density, water content, and void ratio) and mechanical (e.g., quick undrained shear strength) properties of primarily classified fine-grained cohesive soils. Pure kaolinite clay and sand-mixed kaolinite soil (e.g., sand content: 10%, 20%, and 30%) having various water contents (60%, 65%, and 70%) were preconsolidated at different stress levels (0, 13, 17.5, 22 kPa). The quick undrained shear strength properties were determined using the conventional Static Cone Penetration Test (SCPT) method and the new Fall Cone Test (FCT) method. The corresponding void ratios and densities with respect to the quick undrained shear strength were also observed. Correlations of the physical properties and quick undrained shear strengths derived from the SCPT and FCT were also established. Comparison of results showed a significant relationship between the two methods. From the results of FCT and SCPT, there is a decreasing trend of quick undrained shear strength, strength increase ratio ($S_u/P_o$), and void ratio (e) as the sand content is increased. The quick undrained shear strength generally decreases with increased water content. For the same water content, increasing the sand content resulted to a decrease in quick undrained shear strength due to reduced adhesion, and also, resulted to an increase in density. Similarly, it is observed that the change in density is distinctively noticeable at sand content greater than 20%. However, for sand content lower than 10%, there is minimal change in density with respect to water content. In general, the results showed a decrease in quick undrained shear strength for soils with higher amounts of sand content. Therefore, as the soil adhesion is reduced, the cone penetration resistances of the FCT and SCPT reflects internal friction and density of sand in the total shear strength.

  • Normally consolidated and slightly overconsolidated soft clay layer is widely distributed in the south coast of Korea. To ensure the efficient and economical construction design of any structure to be built on this soft soil, exhaustive studies related to geotechnical and physical engineering properties are required. In this study, the relationship of the physical properties of southern Gwangyang marine clay in the Korea Peninsula were examined, including natural water content, specific gravity, total unit weight, initial void ratio, liquid limit, plastic limit, and physical properties of activity and soil parameters. For the parameter relationship analysis, the latest relatively reliable data on the large harbor construction work were used, optimum values were deducted with linear regression and non-linear regression between soil parameters, water content or initial void ratio appears to be very large. Moreover, in the linear and involution pattern regression, equal coefficient of determination appeared. The relationship of the different parameters was shown to be excellent in the non-linear regression of involution equation and exponential equation pattern compared with the findings of linear regression analysis.

  • It takes a long period to conduct the test on soil water retention curve (SWRC) in unsaturated soils. To improve such a problem, the high air entry disk has been replaced by micro-membrane. After the soil water retention test, the results by the micro-membrane were compared with those by the ceramic disk. Multiple samples in 5 regions were used to validate that SWRCs by micro-membrane are equivalent to those by ceramic disk. Therefore, a quick procedure based on micro-membrane has been developed, which makes it available to acquire much soil water retention data. The data of SWRCs were obtained for total 29 samples using ceramic disk or micro-membrane. For Korean weathered soils, the unsaturated hydraulic characteristics are sorted by three groups. Based on van Genuchten model, the group is divided by the parameter n, and the value of n could be correlated to the void ratio as each function.

  • This study entails establishing reference standard sand in Nigeria for engineering and geoenvironmental research work. Sands from four geographical locations in southwestern Nigeria were examined for baseline geotechnical and mineralogical properties. A total of sixteen sand samples were collected. The samples were air dried and subjected to tests in accordance with standard specifications. The tests carried out were: specific gravity, grain size analysis, moisture content, bulk density, porosity, void ratio, chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction and Differential Thermal Analysis. The properties of the samples were compared with a standard (Ottawa sand in Illinois of the United States) in order to find out which of the four samples selected from southwestern Nigeria could serve as standard baseline sand. The results show that Igbokoda sand has geotechnical and mineralogical characteristics closest to Ottawa sand. It was therefore concluded that Igbokoda sand could be used as a standard baseline sand for research work in southwestern Nigeria and other parts of Nigeria since it needs little processing to bring it to the same level as standard baseline sand, like the Ottawa sand.
