  • Since 1977, KAERI has conducted the fundamental R&D on the permanent disposal of potential HLW repository in Korea. The first ten year project is divided into three short-term phase studies. The first phase study which shall be finished in March of 2000, has the prime target to develop the disposal concept of HLW. Throughout this study the preliminary and generic disposal repository system has been introduced. The potential repository is proposed to be emplaced into crystalline rocks which is the most common rock types in Korea. The proposed depth of the repository is between 300 to 700 meter. The numerical code, MASCOT-K was developed to asserts the long term safety of the proposed repository concept. Based on this conceptual design preliminary safely assessment was performed. Results show that for the given disposal system the potential radioactive release it well below the regulatory limit.

  • Background: Postoperative pulmonary complications are important problems that prolong the length of the hospital stay and increase patient mortality. However, our knowledge of the postoperative factors that increase the risk of these complications is less than complete. Methods: We conducted a prospective study to determine the risk factors for postoperative pulmonary complications. A total of 199 patients were referred to the Pulmonology Department for preoperative pulmonary evaluation. We reviewed the perioperative variables according to the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). Postoperatively, we collected data on the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications and we evaluated the relationship between the perioperative variables and outcomes. Results: Twenty two patients (11%) had pulmonary complications; 6 had respiratory failure, 4 had pneumonia, 13 had pleural effusion and, 2 had atelectasis. Five variables were statistically significantly associated with pulmonary complications on the bivariate analyses. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that three of these variables were independently associated with an increased risk of pulmonary complications; a high cardiac risk index (OR 16.5, p=0.002), emergency surgery (OR 10.3, p=0.017), and thoracic/abdominal surgery (OR 3.8, p=0.047). Conclusion: The risk factors for postoperative pulmonary complications are a high cardiac risk index, emergency surgery and thoracic/abdominal surgery.

  • In this study, the Bodhi tree powder is used as an additive to Seolgi rice cake and the research is made how useful the additives are to the Seolgi rice cake. This research would be a good way to develop and distribute the Seolgi rice cake which is added with the powder of Bodhi tree. The results of the study are as follows. 1. The water contents of Bodhi tree was 81.64% with 1.75% of crude protein, 0.81% of crude fat, and 0.56% of crude ash. It was found out that the Bodhi tree has higher contents of polypherol and has the efficacy of anti-oxidation property and has the value as the food stuff. 2. When the Seolgi rice cake is made with the addition of Bodhi tree powder, the value of a and b, sugar, hardness, elasticity, texture and viscosity have risen while the contents of water, L value, pH, stickiness and cohesiveness were lowered. The property test showed that the addition of Bodhi tree to Seolgi rick cake would make all testing items "strong" and the addition of 4% of Bodhi tree in the manufacturing of Seolgi rice cake was most preferred. 3. As for the storage of Seolgi rice cake is concerned, as the period of storage goes by, the value a and b, hardness, elasticity and texture and viscosity have increased while the water contents, L value, stickiness and cohesiveness have reduced. As the period of storage gets longer, the total cell number has increased. But as the more volume of Bodhi tree is added to the rice cake, the total cell number has reduced, thus lengthening the storage period. The rest shows that in producing the Seolgi rice cake, the 4% of addition of Bodhi rice cake is deemed to be the best. It was confirmed that the proper volume of Bodhi powder is proper for the Seolgi rice cake and is also good for decorative and quality characteristics for the rice cake.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine pervasive trends in oral cancer in different countries in an effort to discuss what to do to prevent cancer and drop a death rate. The materials of the study were selected from among articles of oral cancer by searching risk factor and epidemiology at a website (www.oraloncology.com). As a result of analyzing the selected literature, it's found that in our country, the percentage of oral cancer in total cancer dropped but the number of oral cancer patients was on the rise every year. In foreign countries, the number of oral cancer patients was on the increase as well, whereas the lethality dropped. In terms of demographic characteristics, the incidence rate of oral cancer was higher among men than women overall. The incidence rate of oral cancer was larger among older people. The major causes of oral cancer were smoking and drinking. To reduce the incidence rate of oral cancer, every possible institutional, administrative and legal measure should be taken to ensure of anti-smoking policies, and publicity of moderation in and abstinence from drinking should be reinforced. The additional causes of oral cancer were demographic characteristics by country and region. The incidence of oral cancer was under the influence of that was affected when the level of personal economy and education was low. Therefore it's important to redress social imbalance within a country and among countries to remove socioeconomic divide. As the oral cancer patients has increased every year, the incidence rate of it should accurately be grasped, and sustained research efforts should be made in consideration of demographic characteristics. Early diagnosis, public oral health education and preventive policies are all required to decrease the incidence rate of oral cancer.
