  • Step-feed process for biological nitrogen removal were analyzed numerically for the each unit and final total nitrogen(TN) effluent by water quality management(WQM) model and the results were compared data from these wastewater treatment plants. No bugs and logic error were occurred during simulation work. All of the simulation results tried to two times were obtained and both results were almost same as this model has become good reappearance. It was concluded that most of nitrogen removal occurred in the first oxic tank. Thus the controlling of the first anoxic tank may be more important in term of nitrogen removal. Also each unit of simulation result was kept good relationship with that of measured data. Accordingly this WQM model has good reliance. Finally, WQM model can predict final TN effluent within ${\pm}6.0mg/{\ell}$.

  • This study investigated the removal efficiency of organic matter and nitrogen from fish farm effluent by hydraulic retention time (HRT) using an upflow biological filter (ANR system) reactor. The recycling time and influent flow in the reactor were controlled to 14.8, 7.4, 5.5 and 3.2 h to evaluate HRT. In addition, each reactor was coupled to a fixed bed upflow filter charged with media. The results showed that removal efficiency was ${\geq}95%%$ with an HRT of 5.5 h, and nitrification efficiency was reduced to 81% with an HRT of 3.2 h, although nitrification efficiency temporarily decreased due to the shock load as HRT decreased. Total nitrogen removal rate was also reduced to about 65% with an HRT of 3.2 h, which was considered a washout effect of nitrifying and denitrifying microorganisms by increasing the shearing force to the filter media, which decreased organic matter and nitrogen removal efficiency.

  • In this study, we have investigated the effect of the various operating conditions on the removal fluorine in the rinsed water for the semiconductor industry by using electrolysis process. The removal efficiency of fluorine was irrelevant to initial pH, and carbon anode was high-level treatment in the effect of various electrodes. Fluorine included in the wastewater is treated by the addition of a Ca(OH)2, removal efficiency of electrolysis was increased about 40%. Besides the removal efficiency of fluorine was increased as the current density was increased and this treatment system could reduce both the total sludge and running costs. The feasibility of the electrochemical treatment to the fluorine containing wastewater was verified from this study.

  • This research investigated efficient operation mode for the successful performance of SBR(sequencing batch reactor) treating fish processing wastewater, and the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) on treatment efficiency. 2-hour-annerobic, 6-hour-aerobic and 3-hour-anoxic operation during reaction period was found an effective operating method for organic and nitrogen removal from fish processing wastewater in SBR system. The average removal efficiencies of COD, BOD, and total nitrogen in SBR operated continuousely were 91%, 95%, and 67.1%, respectively. The estimated values of biomass yield coefficient(Y), microbial decay coefficient($K_d$), and bioreaction rate constant(K) were $0.35gMLSS/gCOD_{removed}$, $0.015day^{-1}$, and $0.209hr^{-1}$, respectively. As NaCl concentration increased from 5 to 30g/L, sludge settleability was cnhanced but organic removal in the reactor was decreased. NaCl of influent had considerable relationship with COD removal, whereas it did not significant affect nitrogen removal.

  • Treatment conditions of DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) and removal rates of VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) in mixed water of H raw water and VOCs were investigated. The used VOCs were benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene in aromatic compounds and iso propyl mereaptan, n-butyl mereaptan, dimethyl disulfide, and iso butyl mercaptan in odors. The related parameters include water type, treatment method, clay concentration, pH condition, flocculation time, flotation time, per-cent recycle, water temperature, pressure. The removal rates of VOCs were different on treatment process and water condition. Treatment time was longer, removal rates of VOCs was higher. Water temperature was more important than pressure in DAF parameters. Molecular weight was related with removal rate in several kinds of VOCs were decraesed by competition of each component in II raw water. When algac blooming D water was treated by DAF, TCOD(Total chemical Oxygen Demand) and chorophyll a was removed over 96%.

  • The Recently, several countries have been affected by respiratory diseases, resulting in renewed research interest in their prevention and control. One such example was the 2015 outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea and COVID-19. In this study, we performed experiments and simulations based on concentration decay using CO2 as the tracer gas to elucidate the pollutant-removal efficiency for different inlet and exhaust locations and outdoor air-supply ratios. The wall inlet exhibited a higher pollutant-removal efficiency, owing to the upward movement of the air from the lower zone to the upper one. In conclusion, it is recommended that a total air-conditioning plan for isolation rooms be established as well as efficient system operation for pollutant removal and air-flow control to prevent the transmission of infections from the patients to others.

  • The performance of an autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) system was studied to determine if nitrogen loss, as ammonia, was affected by an exhaust gas condenser. The system was run with and without a condenser while treating $8m^3$ of piggery slurry for 8 days. The system with a condenser (SWC) maintained the reactor temperatures above $40^{\circ}C$ for 2 days during the 8 days run, while the system without a condenser (SWOC) remained above $40^{\circ}C$ for 6 days. The SWC maintained the reactor temperatures mostly at mesophilic conditions while the SWOC at thermophilc conditions. Differences in operation conditions for the two runs were mainly caused by differences in atmospheric temperatures. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and volatile solids (VS) removal efficiencies of the SWC (SCOD: 62%, VS: 41%) were higher than those of the SWOC (SCOD: 40%, VS: 20%). The total Kjeldal nitrogen (TKN) removal efficiency of the SWC (7%) was less than that of the SWOC (25%). The concentration of total volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the SWC was observed to be lower than the threshold value of 0.23 g total VFA/L after 6 days, while the SWOC progressed below the threshold value after 3 days. No offensive odor emissions were observed in either run, which suggest that the use of the ATAD system may be a good odor removal strategy.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical characteristics and surgical outcome of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) epidermoids presenting with trigeminal neuralgia. Methods : Between 1996 and 2004, 10 patients with typical symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia were found to have cerebellopontine angle epidermoids and treated surgically at our hospital. We retrospectively analyzed the clinico-radiological records of the patients. Results : Total resection was done in 6 patients (60%). Surgical removal of tumor and microvascular decompression of the trigeminal nerve were performed simultaneously in one case. One patient died due to postoperative aseptic meningitis. The others showed total relief from pain. During follow-up, no patients experienced recurrence of their trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Conclusion : The clinical features of TN from CPA epidermoids are characterized by symptom onset at a younger age compared to TN from vascular causes. In addition to removal of the tumor, the possibility of vascular compression at the root entry zone of the trigeminal nerve should be kept in mind. If it exists, a microvascular decompression (MVD) should be performed. Recurrence of tumor is rare in both total and subtotal removal cases, but long-term follow-up is required.

  • The Photodegradation efficient of total organic compounds in the drinking water has been studied using the methods of photocatalytic reaction and laser beam irradation. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The photodegradation efficiency of total organic compounds shows as $50\%\;to\;80\%$ as within one hour and after this the efficiency is decreased slowly. 2. The photodegradation efficiency of total organic compounds shows as 65 to $90\%$ within 3.3min. when Nd : YAG beam is irradiated to the water layer. 3. An excellent observation of the organic compound removal efficiency gives revealed in that case of the longest wavelength of 532nm is irradiated among the three kinds of laser beam sources of 532nm, 355nm and 266nm. 4. The organic compound removal efficiency shows high in the case of UV beam irradiation in the thin layer of water. However the efficiency is not depended on the thickness of water layer severely. 5. The removal efficiency of the organic compounds in the direct irradiation shows higher than the indirect irradiation in the case of UV beam, but the efficiency is not depended on the direction of irradiation in the case of Nd : YAG beam irradiation.

  • Purpose: Plate systems have been used for osteosynthesis of cranial and oromaxillofacial fracture. However, there is no consensus on the need for routine removal of plate and the question about indications of removal. Therefore, we present the retrospective study to clarify the indications and consensus of removal. Methods: The medical records of patients who were treated with rigid internal fixation using plates after craniofacial trauma were reviewed. Study variables included age, gender, type of fracture, type of plate, seniority of the operator, causes of removal, and time between insertion and removal. All results amendable to statistics were analyzed using SPSS 10.0 to determine which set of variables might affect the fate of the plates. Results: For a period of 10 years (March 1, 1994 through July 31, 2004), total of 41 plates(6.7%) were removed among 609 plates inserted into 419 patients; 27 plates were removed from 15 patients for infection, which is the most common cause of removal accounting for 65.8%. Mean time between insertion and removal is 35.2 months and mean age is 41.4 years. Most plates were removed from combined fracture(14.92%) and facial fracture(8.47%) and these were statistically significant. The age, gender, seniority of the operator and other variables were not statistically associated with plate removal. Conclusion: This retrospective study shows that routine removal does not appear to be clinically indicated due to respectively low removal rate and that the commonest indications for removal were infection.
